Yesterday, just by chance, we got our hands on some huge boxes. One of our neighbours was having a new shower installed and we noticed the cardboard treasures outside her door.  We hadn't planned to make a den, but when two enormous cardboard boxes end up in your possession what else is there to do? \n\nThe den we ended up making is quite sophisticated. It's basically a dome with a roof made of triangles. We should have done some maths to work out how to make it but the number crunching was beyond my capabilities so we used our artistic eyes and guessed. \n\nIt turned out pretty well and since we finished building it the girls have been happily adding lighting, a carpet, a book shelf and a hanging bag for walkie talkies. It's a snug little space. There's just room for them. \n\nThere's something very instinctive about creating a small, safe space. For some, home is little more than our cardboard den. It's a very cold day today. I wonder how we would cope living in such a makeshift structure without the warmth and comfort of our home around it.",

We're booked in to a workshop at the local observatory in a few weeks and we thought it would be nice to do some space related activities beforehand. We had a few things in mind, one of which was making a Nocturnal, or star clock - something the observatory had asked us to make so we can use to on the day.\n\nWhat actually happened though was completely different as is so often the case when you have an \"unschooling plan\". On arrival at our friend's house we found that her husband had retrieved an old computer from the local recycling centre. The kids immediately started taking it apart, finding every tiny screw and asking for smaller and smaller tools. \n\nThe whole afternoon disappeared as the computer was reduced to its individual components. They worked like nothing else existed, barely looking up. When one of them found something they recognised from other electronics projects we've done, they set it aside to bring home. When they found something beautiful they brought it to show me, a set of cogs, the mechanism of the CD drawer.\n\nThe science we had planned didn't happen. But something else did, something equally valuable, something fascinating. It's often that way. A plan changes, something wonderful happens in its place. No one thing is more worthwhile than another. Maybe the planned activity will still happen some other time. Or maybe there will something else too absorbing and we will allow ourselves to be distracted again.",

      "body": "A wise friend once told me the best thing about camping is that you only have one cup and one bowl and you have to wash them up each time you use them. It's so removed from how we usually live.  I think one reason we love camping so much is the way it reduces life down to the minimum. You take with you what you can carry.\n\nI sometimes wonder how we can live so happily for weeks on end with just a backpack each. We barely think about the things we have left at home. It's a little like having an attic. There can be things up there that you might not have looked at or used for years. Maybe you've even forgotten what's there. And honestly, if you have forgotten what's even there, do you really need it at all?\n\nEven our children don't miss their stuff. They are too busy exploring the campsite, finding other kids to make friends with, disappearing off to the playground, climbing trees. There's so much space and freedom.\n\nCamping definitely makes me stop and think about how we live. Could we bring a little more of the camping life into our every day life? I'm quite liking the new way, although in honesty I think any system would have been an improvement on my previous chaos. On the flip side, my children have turned our home into a notebook making factory.\n\nAs usual with these things it's obsessive. They don't do notebook making for an hour at 11am one day a week, they do notebook making all day, every day and will continue to do this until the need to make notebooks is no longer with them (or maybe forever). The frenzy may ease off at some point or they may stop completely and return to it at some future time. Or not. It's completely at odds with how most children get to spend their time. No timetables or school bells telling them it's time to move on to something else now. \n\nToday they have made a joint project - a notebook for the long walk we have planned for the autumn. We're going to aim to walk (with a little help from the odd bus and train) to Italy. We've been researching routes and not to be missed places along the way. Recently we went to an exhibition of photographs of the coast path of Catalunya and it has fired up all our enthusiasm to make this idea a reality.\n\nAt some point I'll share our google route planning map and if you have any ideas of places we should visit you can add them.       "body": "There's nothing like unschooling with a 10 and 11 year old to remind you of all the things you don't know. My own ignorance around all things scientific was brought home to me recently, not only from the book I've been reading where a young boy can take apart radios and rebuild them, but also from a card game.\n\nMy sister sent us this card game about scientists in history. The game basically has cards with different scientists on each one. There are a series of clues to guess the identity of each person. We struggled and my children made a decision that we should each take one card, learn more about the scientist, and teach each other about him or her.\n\nMy eldest decided to investigate Nikola Tesla, and it was this decision that led to my realisation that I knew so little about basic scientific theory. Her research led her to want to make a Tesla coil. At this point my husband, who usually takes on such projects, was away. Much as I wanted to delay and hand the project over to him on his return, I resolved to help her make it.\n\nWe had to visit an electronics store (extra intimidating for me as were the only females of the species apart from the cashier) and order various parts. A resistor, a transistor, a reel of copper wire, a 9V battery, some thin cable. At home the project also involved the use of the soldering iron, a skill we clearly need to work on. After several attempts we finally finished connecting everything. The coil doesn't work. But we made it. And maybe we can make it work somehow.\n\nSince the making day we have been discovering how resistors and transistors work. I feel I should already know this stuff. Maybe I just didn't pay attention in school. Or maybe we didn't learn about these things. Or maybe, like so many things, we learnt about them in an abstract way, in the classroom, without ever actually putting them to use.\n\nOur next scientist was Schrodinger. Finding out more about his theories has been a little mind bending. I mean, is this blog actually here? Our life as a family has moved slowly away from school and work and routine and more towards unschooling and unwork (my own word) and making it up as we go along.  Our life has a certain lack of structure and much as I occasionally try to impose some kind of schedule, it always ends up returning to its own ebb and flow.\n\nHow did we end up living like this? I guess a part of it just comes down to personality. But part of it also comes down to a deliberate move away from a way of life that just didn't fit. It seems that once one part of life has shifted, the others naturally follow, and if they don't naturally follow there's a period of incoherence which feels uncomfortable and eventually begs for attention.\n\nWork, school, home. All have slowly evolved towards something less defined. One has slowly followed the other. We do, it seems, have personalities which don't get along well with imposed schedules. 2pm on a Wednesday. It could find us at home making or baking or playing music or watching a film, it could find us working, it could find us at the beach or an exhibition, it could find us with friends on a walk or visiting the library. I probably don't know what 2pm next Wednesday looks like yet. To some people this is the stuff of nightmares.
