Well, we've started work on it. Actually, I got home one day and my youngest showed me some work she'd done in creating a price list. Clearly the discussions we'd had earlier in the year had been percolating around her brain and she was ready for action.\n\nWe sat down today and asked three important questions: why we want a family currency; how it'll work; and what we need.\n\n## Why We Want a Family Currency\n\nI encouraged the girls to start with a why. We came up with:\n* It's something that's just ours\n* It gives you the freedom to do what you want\n* It makes things you don't want to do fun\n* You can get people to do things for you\n* \"I like earning stuff\"\n* It's just fun\n\n## How It'll Work\n\nThis is an important question and we'll probably need to revisit this a few times. But for now we have:\n* You earn them by doing things\n* You spend them on things you want\n* You can exchange them with each other\n* They come from some sort of central bank/mint\n* They can be exchanged for cash\n\nObviously the first three things on the list are pretty straightforward; the last two are much more tricky.\n\n## What We Need\n\nThis is where the making properly starts. On our list was:\n* A logo\n* A bank and/or mint\n* Physical coins\n* A digital platform\n* A price list\n* Trust\n\nAgain, most of this is self explanatory. We're currently thinking that we'll have some combination of physical coins and a digital platform. When one or more of us builds up quite a few physical coins they'll get translated into digital currency and the coins will go back to the bank for future use. Obviously this is going to take some trial and error.\n\nMy eldest came up with the need for trust; she realised that we needed to trust each other for this to work. She's right of course.\n\nIn the How category are plenty of other things we haven't bothered to discuss yet, which we'll properly explore at a later date. The biggest of these I think is the idea that SNOFCOIN has a life outside our family. We already plan for it to exchange for cash but how else can it relate to other people and currencies?\n\n## Next Steps\n\nSo, we're now working on a few things off the list: the logo, the physical coins and price list. The initial price list ideas have been rather illuminating: aside from the expected spending options of more time watching television and going to be later, the girls have suggested things like fines for hurting each other and payments for casting votes in the event of disagreements (maybe when choosing a film to watch, for example).\n\nThe other noticeable thing about creating a price list is how many of the earning items are matters of judgement: cooking and cleaning could mean pretty much anything. We'll have to see how we get on with that.\n\nSo there's plenty to do, and the first coupe of weeks will be largely about prototyping and reflecting; I'll write it all up as we go, and I'm hoping to encourage the girls to blog about it too. In the meantime, If anyone out there has any suggestions on methods of creating or using a digital platform for this project please let me know.",

I took this photo of my youngest daughter taking a photo. She really wants to be a photographer when she \"grows up\". Or rather, she is a photographer now and wants it to stay that way.\n\nWhen I took this photo I instantly thought about how children now have an opportunity to make public their obsessions: the things they love, want to learn about, want to do as jobs maybe. Those things were very private when I was younger; I doubt that even my parents really knew how much I loved photography when I was a child.\n\nSo, my daughter wants to share her obsession(s) everywhere. She has a 500px account and she loves it when I share photos she's taken. As she gets older the internet will curate a trail of all the things she cared about, regardless of whether they were passing fads or constant threads through her life.\n\nI want to help her do it the right way (whatever that is) but I also want to learn from it myself. I feel recently like I've retreated a little from just \"putting out there\". I've maybe exercised a little too much editorial control and overthought things. Some of the most enjoyable things I've done on the internet have been more about finding any route to sharing what I was into at that precise moment than building up anything coherent. I've learned more about myself (and others) that way. I hope to find that feeling again.",

      "body": "I'm pretty sure that it's the same thing with art galleries in the UK. One of the main reasons for people visiting the National Gallery was \"to get out of the rain\". Makes me wonder if there's some cultural issue around libraries in the UK. Perhaps as a population the Brits don't value them enough and so not enough people fight for them.\n\nI got a library card in Barcelona with my passport, by the way, and I was wondering how they'd chase up the fines with that information. But now I've discovered they don't have fines.",

      "body": "I did some field research on libraries in the UK about twenty years ago.  The main thing I remember is that the most frequently asked question at almost all enquiry desks was \"Is there a toilet here I can use?\"\n\nI occasionally try to work in Guildford library.  But the main study area is next to the enquiry desk, which, as one of the only presences in the the town for the County Council, is where bus passes are given out.  I listened the other day to a family of elderly Belgians trying to get their passes, but being stymied by the fact that they did not have a UK National Insurance number.  They could not understand why reeling off their social security numbers from Belgium wouldn't work.  Only one of them could speak English and was interpreting for the others.  You can imagine.  I could hardly go and shush them, but...",

      "body": "On Saturday we went to visit our brand new library; we love libraries and we've been really looking forward to this one opening. It also happens to be our nearest library now and it has a great maker space too.\n\n![IMG_8865.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmQVLmGTqG743Hut982umzZ9o8AqXobwfb889kSaX14aJQ/IMG_8865.jpg)\n\nIt's a beautiful place and a great addition to the many libraries in Barcelona.\n\nI took a photo of the library (the one above) and shared it on Instagram; one of my friends commented, \"at least some people recognise the value of libraries\". They're referring to the state of libraries in the UK, where I used to live. In sharp contrast to Barcelona the British government have, for some years, been taking money away from libraries and [forcing many of them to close](https://www.theguardian.com/books/2016/dec/12/library-closures-will-double-unless-immediate-action-is-taken). \n\nOn the face of it I suppose it does seem like the British government don't really see the value in libraries, but I can't really accept that anyone could fail to see the value and importance of public libraries; it's hard to argue against free, universal access to knowledge (and so much more). In the UK at the moment a lot of services are getting cut because of what they're calling \"austerity\": the country is tightening its belt to help get the economy back on track (that's the theory, anyway).\n\nThe general narrative is that whatever gets cut just simply isn't seen as valuable. But maybe it's something else altogether: maybe some of those things that get cut are seen as very valuable indeed, it's just that the people who make the funding decisions really don't like the values they represent. Maybe by framing our perspective this way we can better understand what a government really wants to discourage, and start thinking about why.",
