titlePreparing SVG Files For Web Browsers
body

Introduction

SVG is an incredible format - There's nearly universal support of it in modern browsers. It allows you to present visuals to users without worrying about screen resolution. And SVG assets are typically smaller in file size than their bitmap equivalent, while looking better at any size. But, there are a few downsides to choosing SVG as your format for visuals on the web. Today, we’re focusing on a key area designers overlook when putting SVG’s into a website or web application: preparation.

When I talk about "preparation", I mean ensuring that your file looks exactly as intended when viewed in a browser. Contrary to common belief, it's not always as easy as saving your Illustrator document as a ".SVG" file. Let’s go over a few major issues with displaying SVG files in web browsers.

Fonts

When it comes to fonts, current browsers aren’t very savvy. And limitations aren't exclusive to the @font-face property; if your designs feature any text at all (even numbers, punctuation, special characters, etc.), your users may not be seeing what you want. Let's take a look at how web browsers handle an SVG file with type in it.

Font in the left image is "Palm Canyon Drive", created by Amy Hood and available here.

On the left is a design as it would appear in your SVG editor (Illustrator, Inkscape, etc.). On the right, the same design is presented as it might appear in a web browser. As you'll notice, we've got a problem with how that font is being displayed. Let's discuss why the web browser isn't displaying our file correctly.

When a custom font is installed on your computer, (unsurprisingly) it's correctly displayed in your SVG editor. The same is true when you view your SVG file in your own web browser (which is also why it's a good idea to check your designs after disabling a custom font). However, when users who do not have your custom font installed view that SVG file in their browser, their browser cannot find the font, and replaces it with a web-safe font. So instead of seeing your beautiful, script typeface, they get something like Times New Roman across their screen.

If you have a common, web-safe font in your SVG file, you might not have to worry about a browser selecting which font to display. But, it's still best to err on the side of caution and assume that no fonts will display correctly. Also, remember that many mobile devices only have web-safe fonts installed, and many of those users have no ability to install custom fonts.

Since we have a custom font in our project, we need it to display correctly for all users. In order to ensure compatibility, we need to convert it from a font to a shape. We'll accomplish this by outlining the font.

In Illustrator, select all text in your document (you can simply "Select" -> "All" elements as this will only affect text anyway). Under “Type” in the menu bar, find the “Create Outlines” option.

Alternatively, you can use the keyboard shortcut
shift + cmd + O
on Mac and
shift + ctrl + O
on Windows. After clicking "Create Outlines", Illustrator will convert your text to outline form, which is a series of points that any SVG compatible browser can display as you originally designed it.

The only caveat to this method is that it will make your text un-editable. As a safeguard, I suggest saving a version of the file as .AI (or whichever format is native to your SVG editor) and wait until you're ready to use the file to save it as .SVG, with all fonts outlined. This way, if you ever want to go back and edit the text, you won’t lose your font formatting.

Strokes

Another thing browsers can have difficulty displaying are "strokes" or borders commonly applied in SVG. This is less of an issue with modern browsers, but with SVG (especially when animating), strokes can be displayed incorrectly. If all strokes used in your work have straight edges and corners, and are aligned to the center, you shouldn’t have issues. However, as a general rule, it’s best to make your SVG assets as “dumb” (aka browser-readable) as possible.

Similar to how we handled fonts, the best way to ensure that your strokes appear correctly in browsers is to select all strokes (you can use “Select All” and it will only apply to strokes) Alternatively: use “Select Similar Options” dropdown —> “Appearance” and then select “Object” —> “Path” —> “Outline Stroke”.

If you use any custom strokes (custom brushes, pens, etc.), you will need to outline them, as there is absolutely no support (as of this writing) for custom stroke types in web browsers. Hopefully, this will change at some point but I would imagine it’s a long way off in the future if it does become reality. For now, outlining strokes, while saving an editable version, is your best bet to make sure users see your designs as they were intended.

On the left is a design that features strokes with both "round joins" (rounded corners) and "round caps" (rounded ends). Additionally, the line below "123" is a dashed stroke pattern. On the right is the same design as it might be rendered in a browser. You'll notice that all corners now have a "miter join" (sharp corner) and "butt caps" (flat ends). Lastly, our dashed line is not read correctly and simply displays as a straight stroke with a flat end. Let's discuss why this is happening and how we can fix it.

These strokes display correctly in our editor because the software is directly controlling the preview image that appears on our monitor. Web browsers, however, don't always follow (or know how to follow) specific instructions of how to display SVG strokes.

Also, worth noting - If you have fonts with strokes, "Create Outlines" from the fonts first and then "Outline Strokes" and combine the shapes. If you create outlines from the strokes first, they will be ignored when you combine (or flatten) your assets.

Anchor Points

In general, if you Image Traced any part of your design, you'll likely have extra anchor points. This might not appear like a big deal visually, and you might think that the SVG file is small as is (30kb and below is pretty tiny after all). But it’s another way to ensure that your assets load as quickly as possible and still look their best.

Just as it's good practice to simplify our designs, it's useful to simplify our SVG assets. Like the other parts of this tutorial, Illustrator has a built-in way to simplify assets (conveniently called “Simplify”, found under “Path” in the menu bar). This method can work pretty well if you have simple shapes that you’d like to clean up. But, like many things, often the manual way is most effective. Select the object you’d like to simplify, and see how many anchor points are located along a line but are not actually affecting the shape.

If you Image Traced any part of your design, you’ll likely have extra anchor points.

In this photo, we see a rectangle that is well drawn, but has more than 4 points (which, by definition, are unnecessary). We should delete these superfluous anchor points.

Each anchor point is extra data the browser has to process before displaying the image. While this might seem small, these data points can quickly add up. The fewer anchor points we have, while still maintaining our designs, the better.

title3 Things Freelance Designers Need Before Work Begins
body
Introduction

It's a day of the week. Let's say a weekday. You're relaxing, enjoying a caffeinated beverage at the perfect either warm or cold temperature. Life is not terrible. Your computing device makes a sound. It's an email. It reads:

Hi Awesome Designer,

I found your Dribbble profile and I just love what you did in Project XYZ! I think you'd be the perfect designer for my upcoming project. Are you able to hop on a call sometime this week to discuss details?

Regards,
Future Client

Pretty exciting stuff, right? Of course! You might have just met a new client with whom you could develop a great business relationship. But before you complete that self high-five, consider that:

You might be receiving a generic solicitation (most probable, unless they specifically reference your work).

OR

You might not want to work with this client.

But today feels optimistic. Let's assume that they really are a great guy/gal with actual project potential. Here are three things that you'll want to be sure to receive before agreeing to do any work.

Attention: Contracts are not mentioned in this article. They're incredibly important. If you're interested, we will discuss them in other articles.

Budget

A client should have an idea of how much they're willing to spend for a project. This is a crucial step and can (and often does) make or break the project. There are many affordable designers out there, but if the client wants the quality of a seasoned professional it will often cost a bit more than perhaps they're anticipating.

Designers

Understand how much your work is actually worth. Do you also do front-end web development? Have you worked with a prestigious group of clients? If you bring additional skills to the table that can assist the client further than another designer, make sure to raise these points.

Keep in mind that you could have the best work history relationships with clients and a kickass portfolio to boot, but if you don't lay out the costs associated with your quoted fee, you might scare a client away before they have the chance to understand how much you'll actually be saving/earning them money.

A very effective technique that freelancers employ is the use of a Gantt Chart. Show, don't (just) tell. Showing the prospective client where his/her money will be spent is a great way to show your skill set and experience. Newer designers often don't grasp the business aspect of freelancing, and instead take the get-any-gig-you-can-get approach.

Clients

Do some research and see what designers are charging for the type of project you have, but keep in mind that many freelance designers rely on competitive pricing to ensure that they can continue to run their own business. While you might see a high price, what you don't see are the expenses and taxes that the designer has to pay.

Remember that, like any business relationship, you might need to negotiate the original quoted fee. See if the designer offers a discounted rate for a more relaxed timeline.

Timeline

Timelines (how long until you need the final product from the designer) are crucial to determine capacity for any given project. If the timeline is crunched (as they often are), you should be charging more. Seems obvious, but many overlook the time aspect when preparing a quote.

Designers

Apps like Cushion can help you measure your freelance availability, especially in between simultaneous projects. There certainly are clients that plan ahead and be sure to include discounted rates for clients who allow more time to be spent on the project. Just make sure to fill in this time with additional projects.

Stay ahead of your busy schedule with applications like Cushion

Clients

Ideally, you know that you need a designer early on, but sometimes last minute requirements crop up. Either way, be sure to contact designers as soon as you think you'll need one. The earlier you get one - and thus, the more time you give them - the more likely they are to bring down the price a bit.

Clients who are more flexible with timing are given breaks on cost, but there are no guarantees. Don't count on huge discounts for a long timeline, but bring up the idea with the designer if his/her rate seems steep. It allows the designer to take on simultaneous posts without compromising quality and also allows for plenty of revision time.

Deliverables

Depending on the project, there can be many types of deliverables, from exported assets and stock photos to icon fonts and style guides. Be sure to understand the full scope of the project in order to be quote a fee and serve the client.

Designers

Be sure that your client understands your abilities. You don't want to present yourself as capable in an area in which you're not, or to misrepresent how long the work will take. If the project seems like it will take several months, be upfront about this and how much that will factor in to your fee.

Realize that plans might change down the road. Have an hourly rate for scope deemed to be out-of-scope and make sure that the client understands that extra deliverables will (in all likelihood) extend past the original deadline.

Clients

This one might be obvious, but be as specific as you can about what you actually need from the designer by the end of the project. So often, clients just have a rough idea of the work they need. But, in order for a designer to provide an accurate quote and budget time correctly, he/she needs to know what you require.

Make sure to itemize the list so the designer can easily see quantities/varieties of each item. For example, if you're looking to have an icon set created, be sure to state if you require variations (weight, style, size, etc.) of the icons.

Conclusion

These three items are essential to getting your project started in all of the right ways. Be sure to really discuss details with the client so that he/she is certain of what the project will costs, how long it will take and what it includes. If you bring additional skills to the table that can assist the client further than another designer, make sure to raise these points.
\n
Keep in mind that you could have the best work history relationships with clients and a kickass portfolio to boot, but if you don't lay out the costs associated with your quoted fee, you might scare a client away before they have the chance to understand how much you'll actually be saving/earning them money.
\n
A very effective technique that freelancers employ is the use of a Gantt Chart. Show, don't (just) tell. Showing the prospective client where his/her money will be spent is a great way to show your skill set and experience. Newer designers often don't grasp the business aspect of freelancing, and instead take the get-any-gig-you-can-get approach.
\n
Clients
\n
Do some research and see what designers are charging for the type of project you have, but keep in mind that many freelance designers rely on competitive pricing to ensure that they can continue to run their own business. While you might see a high price, what you don't see are the expenses and taxes that the designer has to pay.
\n
Remember that, like any business relationship, you might need to negotiate the original quoted fee. See if the designer offers a discounted rate for a more relaxed timeline.
\n

\n
Timeline
\n
Timelines (how long until you need the final product from the designer) are crucial to determine capacity for any given project. If the timeline is crunched (as they often are), you should be charging more. Seems obvious, but many overlook the time aspect when preparing a quote.
\n
Designers
\n
Apps like Cushion can help you measure your freelance availability, especially in between simultaneous projects. There certainly are clients that plan ahead and be sure to include discounted rates for clients who allow more time to be spent on the project. Just make sure to fill in this time with additional projects.
\n\n
Stay ahead of your busy schedule with applications like Cushion
\n
Clients
\n
Ideally, you know that you need a designer early on, but sometimes last minute requirements crop up. Either way, be sure to contact designers as soon as you think you'll need one. The earlier you get one - and thus, the more time you give them - the more likely they are to bring down the price a bit.
\n
Clients who are more flexible with timing are given breaks on cost, but there are no guarantees. Don't count on huge discounts for a long timeline, but bring up the idea with the designer if his/her rate seems steep. It allows the designer to take on simultaneous posts without compromising quality and also allows for plenty of revision time.
\n

\n
Deliverables
\n
Depending on the project, there can be many types of deliverables, from exported assets and stock photos to icon fonts and style guides. Be sure to understand the full scope of the project in order to be quote a fee and serve the client.
\n
Designers
\n
Be sure that your client understands your abilities. You don't want to present yourself as capable in an area in which you're not, or to misrepresent how long the work will take. If the project seems like it will take several months, be upfront about this and how much that will factor in to your fee.
\n
Realize that plans might change down the road. Have an hourly rate for scope deemed to be out-of-scope and make sure that the client understands that extra deliverables will (in all likelihood) extend past the original deadline.
\n
Clients
\n
This one might be obvious, but be as specific as you can about what you actually need from the designer by the end of the project. So often, clients just have a rough idea of the work they need. But, in order for a designer to provide an accurate quote and budget time correctly, he/she needs to know what you require.
\n
Make sure to itemize the list so the designer can easily see quantities/varieties of each item. For example, if you're looking to have an icon set created, be sure to state if you require variations (weight, style, size, etc.) of the icons.
\n
Conclusion
\n
These three items are essential to getting your project started in all of the right ways. Be sure to really discuss details with the client so that he/she is certain of what the project will costs, how long it will take and what it includes. titleFinding Remote (Especially Design) Work Online
body

When it rains, it pours

It should be every freelancer's career motto. It's cliche yet true; we presently have a unique ability to create our own work. Let's explore a few ways you can find remote design (and other freelance) work online.

1. Remote Job Boards

Remote job boards will be an obvious choice for many. But not all job boards are created equally. Here are some of the best:

AngelList

Authentic Jobs

Behance

Designer News

Dribbble

We Work Remotely

Authentic Jobs allows you specify to the job type, location, and remote availability, as well as perform a specific keyword search.

Several sites offer the ability to subscribe to job listing updates. We Work Remotely and Authentic Jobs offer RSS notifications.

Here is an Authentic Jobs RSS feed that will give you updates of remote, UI Designer jobs.

Here is a We Work Remotely RSS feed for design jobs.

Though Behance doesn't have a specific filter for remote jobs, you can
cmd + F
 (Mac) and
ctrl + F
(Windows) the term "anywhere" to find listings that are location-agnostic.

2. SketchDeck

Full Disclosure: I periodically work for SketchDeck as a freelance designer/developer. However, I've received absolutely no compensation for mentioning it in this list.

How It Works:

1. Apply to work as a freelance designer at SketchDeck.

2. Complete the design challenge. While I'm typically against design challenges, this is an exception as everyone gets the same design challenge and doesn't get used for actual work at SketchDeck.

3. You'll usually hear back within a few weeks (often sooner) if you've been accepted.

4. When you join SketchDeck, you'll get placed on a team of project managers, developers and directors who will give you briefs that you can accept/decline whenever you have extra time.

More information available here.

3. Twitter

Weren't expecting Twitter to be here? Oh you were? I guess you're ahead of the curve. Or just me.

Well hopefully some of you are surprised to hear that Twitter isn't just a playground for celebrities and stand-up comics. Actually, it can be a pretty powerful resource for finding freelance jobs of all sorts.

First of all, if you've never saved searches on Twitter, go ahead and read up a little. They allow you to: easily call up promotional codes when a giveaway is occurring, find invitations to beta software releases, quickly scour live updates from a band's tour and much more.

How To Find Jobs On Twitter:

1. Narrow down a specific design discipline or type of project at which you most excel. This is imperative to landing a job. After all, you're applying in less than 140 characters for something that could pay thousands of dollars.

2. Create a generic search. Some that I've found work best are looking for animator and looking for illustrator. Even looking for designer can work if you're willing to hunt through results (think of other design jobs that can be caught by this search phrase).

3. Repeat as often as you have free time for jobs.

Note: This is a hit-or-miss technique. I've had job opportunities within minutes of reaching out to people, and I've also had many instances where I never heard back. But, if you're persistent, Twitter can be an incredible way to find rewarding work opportunities.

One Last Thing

To make these steps easily repeatable, save all relevant links in a bookmarks folder. You can then right-click the folder and select "Open All Bookmarks".

If you find any/all of these methods to be helpful, or if you have other ways of finding design work online, please post a reply. Thanks, everyone.
