bodyI don’t think it’s possible to make a top 5 declaring one of these cities better than another because they all have unique characteristics that make them equally fascinating and enjoyable to visit. 5 capitals of Asian countries where I lived, in each of them, for several months: I will try in this article to convey what impressed me most and what can be expected from the various cities! Hanoi, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok, in Southeast Asia are cheaper than Seoul or Taipei, but there are ways to do not spend too much money here too: for example using hostels and Airbnb, occasionally cooking your own meals (the hostels have almost all a kitchen made available to guests), eating the delicious and cheap street food or going to some local fast chain. Seoul can become very cold during the winter and super hot during the summer but spring and autumn are really beautiful, Taipei and Hanoi reach during the months of December and January cool temperatures and in summer the thermometer goes up a lot, while Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur are hot and humid all year round. --------------------------------- Hanoi – Capital of Vietnam ![5-asian-capitals-12-e1551162478954.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmd2aEqMWnad7aKEPSBbZzw73gPHKJACSThMC1kaQdC2Q2/5-asian-capitals-12-e1551162478954.jpeg) Hanoi is full of vitality, not that the other Asian cities of which I speak on this page are not, but here is really pure energy that the capital of Vietnam releases and transmits at every step between its alleys and streets. ![5-asian-capitals-05-e1551162642746.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmXo9ij2V45G9TaHE8J7pAqHDPAi3UmAVxYq3TuBrRPU6R/5-asian-capitals-05-e1551162642746.jpeg) The most interesting part of the city is probably the old quarter, a colorful and lively set of small restaurants and stalls where you can try the local delights of traditional food, shops that sell a bit of everything, cool markets but above all the coffee shops where you can enjoy a delicious Vietnamese coffee seated on one of those low stools typical of Vietnam while observing the super dynamic coming and going of people on foot and by scooter. Ancient temples, parks and lakes, colonial architecture and museums (very important is the mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh, the father of the country) will keep you busy during the day on a visit to the city of Hanoi, while from late afternoon and through the night you can cool off with a good and cheap beer “Bia Hơi” eating some local street food. The food in Hanoi is delicious and with unique flavors that you will not find in other Asian cuisines. Many leaves and fresh aromatic herbs are used. The noodles are super succulent, very famous the pho (noodle soup), meat like Bún chả, fish and seafood are amazing too, all to try! You can taste several particular foods, which you can find quite easily: snake heart, boiled chicken or duck embryo (hot vit lon), fried insects and many other culinary quirks. Vietnamese coffee is really good and with a very strong taste and intense aroma, usually, they serve it with condensed milk and you can enjoy it hot or cold. In some bars they serve it with the egg (Cà phê trứng), I think it’s worth trying, even if someone does not like it at all. The best way to visit Hanoi is on foot or riding a scooter. You can also use the good public bus transportations and services such as Uber or Grab, here there is the motorbike option where the driver comes to pick you up on his two motorized wheels! ---------------------------------- Kuala Lumpur – Capital of Malaysia ![5-asian-capitals-01-e1551162785345.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmTxLKAnqafda8Z6bHUdzG4D1aUszxkP6VyT1uZEQxbhUK/5-asian-capitals-01-e1551162785345.jpeg) Kuala Lumpur, or KL, as the locals call it, is a city that is becoming more and more modern and beautiful, every time I come back I discover something new and interesting. The main attraction, besides the wonderful Petronas twin towers that I recommend you do not miss, is the kind and friendly people! Malaysia is made of a mixture of Malay, Chinese and Indian culture and in the streets, you will notice this unique and interesting meeting of different trends coming from very different parts of the world, visible both in the architecture and in the lifestyles and customs of the local population: a characteristic that reaches its peak here in the capital Kuala Lumpur! Gorgeous mosques, colorful and majestic Indian and Chinese temples, restaurants with a really impressive and excellent variety of foods, originated from the various culinary typicality of the different ethnic groups and from the mixtures of them during the time. And all the various traditions that are still strong here can be seen in every aspect of the daily life of the local population, in contrast with their modern and globalized lifestyle. It’s quite easy to stop and chat with someone who lives and was born here, who will be happy to tell you something about his life and convey to you what Malaysia represents for him! ![5-asian-capitals-18-e1551162820276.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmda2ELazMNg6VFR14LUpDMTntPhcFXzDB7mDFJUBUyv8B/5-asian-capitals-18-e1551162820276.jpeg) When you feel destroyed by the heat and humidity of the city you can go to find some rest in a shopping mall, it’s also an interesting opportunity to see how the locals live. Kuala Lumpur is very easy to visit on foot, by bus (there is some public transport for free!) or by subway. Grab is a really good service and I recommend you use it to get around. ------------------------------ Bangkok – Capital of Thailand ![5-asian-capitals-11.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmPAr1yMSWD45EowXFtr6mt6utbjJxkvi4SbymMxBpd71D/5-asian-capitals-11.jpeg) One of the most famous and visited places in all of Asia: Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, is probably a place where many of you have already been… and not by chance! This city has a lot to offer to tourists and travelers coming from all over the world with a variety of interests: culture, relaxation, entertainment, food, nature, shopping, history. A quite populated megalopolis, super active 24 hours a day, where you will find something to do at any time and wherever you are. Well known for its delicious and spicy food: Thai cuisine has become one of the most appreciated of Asia, the culinary specialties are numerous and varied and for sure you will find a dish that will make you want to eat it over and over during your stay in the country. The nightlife here is unique: there are some neighborhoods where tourists are concentrated, like the areas around Sukhumvit or the super famous Khaosan Road, but almost everywhere else in city you will find a bar or a place open all night to party. Markets are another big attraction of the city: the stalls sell everything during the day, there are also many night markets that remain open until morning where you can eat street food and buy a wide variety of items and clothes at any time that you will spend here in Bangkok. Some are really immense, like Chatuchak’s open on the weekends. Besides the nighttime follies and some small gluttonies, Bangkok also offers relaxing solutions for the body and soul: Thai massage centers are present in every corner of the capital and the therapies are super pleasant and very cheap. Usually, the massage is quite intense because the pressure exerted on the muscles is strong, but you can request it more delicate and soft. The temples, which you will find everywhere, are another way to experience the culture and peace that Buddhism has spread throughout the country. The only smile of the Buddha, which you will see entering religious architecture, is enough to calm the mind without having to use meditation techniques, which you can still practice around here! Often what you have experienced you can also learn through the various courses that they organize, like Thai cooking, Thai Massage that are often held in temples and meditation classes. The Chaophraya River is a beautiful place to visit during the sunset and during all the day the boats that sail it are a good way of transportation that you can use to avoid road traffic. The same can be applied to the various canals in the city, which during the navigation you will pass along really interesting areas to discover. ![5-asian-capitals-10-e1551162936179.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmYHwiVb81hGKBdtpHQHz1dyxZZbL7g3m4V8mykvpZBDAc/5-asian-capitals-10-e1551162936179.jpeg) Bangkok also has one of the most beautiful Chinatowns I’ve ever seen, take a walk along Yaowarat Road and in the streets and side alleys that will certainly lead you to an alternative city tour. The food in this area is great! Do not stop at the usual and super touristy Khaosan Road or the crazy Sukhumvit, but get deeper into the city to discover the real Bangkok! You can travel around the Thai capital by metro, with the sky-train ( the train that passes on your heads), with taxis (which are really cheap), using the service of Uber or Grab and, my favorite, jump on a boat that sails the Chaophraya River or one of the many canals in the center. ------------------------------ Taipei – Capital of Taiwan ![5-asian-capitals-17-e1551162978952.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmQ6VGTv791EHRoSPcacfj4uAypJLqKai1RFJ3kpLfjkRV/5-asian-capitals-17-e1551162978952.jpeg) Taipei is the capital of the beautiful island of Taiwan, animated by night markets that you will find in different areas of the city and where you can have a taste of the special and tasty local food! A meeting between China and Japan with Western influences, that makes the capital unique and despite being a big city you have the feeling of being in a quiet, pleasant and not suffocating place. ![5-asian-capitals-09-e1551163018693.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmQ6Ab6m4CMYtbgrgQdPeCykKdWGZofXHdhc9eTqnKXaKE/5-asian-capitals-09-e1551163018693.jpeg) Many things to do and visit in Taipei: do not miss a photo shoot of the Taipei 101 (one of the tallest skyscrapers in the world) or at Chiang Kai-shek Memorial. The fascinating and ancient Chinese temples that you can find at every corner, parks, museums and numerous festivals will give you an excellent introduction to the local culture. Culinary delights are one of the highlights of the city, in addition to the markets that sell street food, each area and neighborhood have something distinctive and exquisite to satisfy your appetite. Sometimes you’ll sense a strange smell coming from one of the street food stalls, do not worry, there’s nothing that’s going bad, it’s “stinky tofu” (臭豆腐 / chòudòufu), a specialty that I suggest you try, if you feel like it … Taipei is not just cement and roads, there are many opportunities for being out with nature: just a few minutes from the center you can take a nice walk in the relaxing Yangmingshan National Park, or have a beautiful view of the city from Mount Xiangshan, also called Elephant Mountain. All destinations easily reached by using the subway. The hot springs are very popular and near the capital there is the sea with the beautiful coast of the island of Taiwan! It is very easy to get around on foot or with its super effective ways of transport: the subway reaches many areas of the city and is really convenient! You can also rent one of the many bikes of the excellent bike sharing system available everywhere. ------------------------------ Seoul – Capital of South Korea ![5-asian-capitals-21.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWfzdsDYUcadDCHcrrqJbUk1J6wn8S9rPeeDP2CkJKKBp/5-asian-capitals-21.jpeg) Seoul, the super-populated capital of South Korea, is perhaps my favorite among many … ok I did not want to make a top 5 … but this is a really nice place to visit. Contrasts are what fascinate me the most in the Asian cities and here in Seoul they are unique, traditional lifestyles mix with the more westernized and modern ones in the super technologically advanced capital of the Asian peninsula which has a deep imprint in the unique and inimitable Korean style! A feature that makes me appreciate Seoul is the fact that it’s not as famous as other cities, so there are not yet all the foreigners who for years now had already invaded the other capitals and it is pleasant for me to be one of the few Westerners around here. Seoul has an explosive nightlife, which is mainly concentrated in the neighborhoods of Hongdae, Itaewon and Gangnam, where fun is overwhelming and inevitable! There are restaurants open 24 hours a day, clubs, live bars and pubs at every corner full of people who want to forget the stress of the day and spend a pleasant evening, which usually extends until late morning. The food is great and varied, a unique and intense flavors cuisine, often very spicy but you can also find more soft delights. Sometimes you find really eccentric specialties, like the hongeo (fermented fish) or the san-nakji (an octopus that is served raw and so fresh that the tentacles keep moving in your dish). Seoul is surrounded by mountains, which can be a good idea to spend a day in nature, all easily accessible by subway or bus. A city full of beautiful museums and interesting ancient and modern art: Korean music and films are super famous here in Asia and they are also becoming popular in the rest of the world. As I said, it is a super modern and advanced capital, but besides skyscrapers and buildings you can still find fascinating hanok, the beautiful traditional Korean houses, some kept as private residences transformed into cafes or restaurants. In addition, the center has 5 unique and enchanting royal palaces of the various rulers of the Joseon dynasty that have taken place in the past, including the most famous and important Gyeongbokgung Palace. ![5-asian-capitals-19.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdVU4p4AtFWrb1mJqwqzpyvXasFHBCzdurFErpj3fYwx6/5-asian-capitals-19.jpeg) During the spring the city is covered with cherry trees in bloom, with branches covered with flowers with white petals to decorate the streets of Seoul, always full of people at every hour of the day. Seoul is immense, go around on foot is impossible, but fortunately, the Korean capital has a really effective transport network! The subway goes almost anywhere and the system is extended to satellite cities, buses are another great option to use to travel around the city. Uber is not present but taxis are not too expensive.

"body": "I don’t think it’s possible to make a top 5 declaring one of these cities better than another because they all have unique characteristics that make them equally fascinating and enjoyable to visit.\n\n5 capitals of Asian countries where I lived, in each of them, for several months: I will try in this article to convey what impressed me most and what can be expected from the various cities!\n\nHanoi, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok, in Southeast Asia are cheaper than Seoul or Taipei, but there are ways to do not spend too much money here too: for example using hostels and Airbnb, occasionally cooking your own meals (the hostels have almost all a kitchen made available to guests), eating the delicious and cheap street food or going to some local fast chain.\n\nSeoul can become very cold during the winter and super hot during the summer but spring and autumn are really beautiful, Taipei and Hanoi reach during the months of December and January cool temperatures and in summer the thermometer goes up a lot, while Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur are hot and humid all year round.\n\n---------------------------------\n\nHanoi – Capital of Vietnam\n\n\n![5-asian-capitals-12-e1551162478954.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmd2aEqMWnad7aKEPSBbZzw73gPHKJACSThMC1kaQdC2Q2/5-asian-capitals-12-e1551162478954.jpeg)\n\n\nHanoi is full of vitality, not that the other Asian cities of which I speak on this page are not, but here is really pure energy that the capital of Vietnam releases and transmits at every step between its alleys and streets.\n\n\n![5-asian-capitals-05-e1551162642746.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmXo9ij2V45G9TaHE8J7pAqHDPAi3UmAVxYq3TuBrRPU6R/5-asian-capitals-05-e1551162642746.jpeg)\n\n\nThe most interesting part of the city is probably the old quarter, a colorful and lively set of small restaurants and stalls where you can try the local delights of traditional food, shops that sell a bit of everything, cool markets but above all the coffee shops where you can enjoy a delicious Vietnamese coffee seated on one of those low stools typical of Vietnam while observing the super dynamic coming and going of people on foot and by scooter.\n\nAncient temples, parks and lakes, colonial architecture and museums (very important is the mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh, the father of the country) will keep you busy during the day on a visit to the city of Hanoi, while from late afternoon and through the night you can cool off with a good and cheap beer “Bia Hơi” eating some local street food.\n\nThe food in Hanoi is delicious and with unique flavors that you will not find in other Asian cuisines. Many leaves and fresh aromatic herbs are used. The noodles are super succulent, very famous the pho (noodle soup), meat like Bún chả, fish and seafood are amazing too, all to try! You can taste several particular foods, which you can find quite easily: snake heart, boiled chicken or duck embryo (hot vit lon), fried insects and many other culinary quirks.\n\nVietnamese coffee is really good and with a very strong taste and intense aroma, usually, they serve it with condensed milk and you can enjoy it hot or cold. In some bars they serve it with the egg (Cà phê trứng), I think it’s worth trying, even if someone does not like it at all.\n\nThe best way to visit Hanoi is on foot or riding a scooter. You can also use the good public bus transportations and services such as Uber or Grab, here there is the motorbike option where the driver comes to pick you up on his two motorized wheels!\n\n----------------------------------\n\nKuala Lumpur – Capital of Malaysia\n\n![5-asian-capitals-01-e1551162785345.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmTxLKAnqafda8Z6bHUdzG4D1aUszxkP6VyT1uZEQxbhUK/5-asian-capitals-01-e1551162785345.jpeg)\n\n\nKuala Lumpur, or KL, as the locals call it, is a city that is becoming more and more modern and beautiful, every time I come back I discover something new and interesting.\n\nThe main attraction, besides the wonderful Petronas twin towers that I recommend you do not miss, is the kind and friendly people!\n\nMalaysia is made of a mixture of Malay, Chinese and Indian culture and in the streets, you will notice this unique and interesting meeting of different trends coming from very different parts of the world, visible both in the architecture and in the lifestyles and customs of the local population: a characteristic that reaches its peak here in the capital Kuala Lumpur!\n\nGorgeous mosques, colorful and majestic Indian and Chinese temples, restaurants with a really impressive and excellent variety of foods, originated from the various culinary typicality of the different ethnic groups and from the mixtures of them during the time. And all the various traditions that are still strong here can be seen in every aspect of the daily life of the local population, in contrast with their modern and globalized lifestyle. It’s quite easy to stop and chat with someone who lives and was born here, who will be happy to tell you something about his life and convey to you what Malaysia represents for him!\n\n\n![5-asian-capitals-18-e1551162820276.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmda2ELazMNg6VFR14LUpDMTntPhcFXzDB7mDFJUBUyv8B/5-asian-capitals-18-e1551162820276.jpeg)\n\n\nWhen you feel destroyed by the heat and humidity of the city you can go to find some rest in a shopping mall, it’s also an interesting opportunity to see how the locals live.\n\nKuala Lumpur is very easy to visit on foot, by bus (there is some public transport for free!) or by subway. Grab is a really good service and I recommend you use it to get around.\n\n------------------------------\n\nBangkok – Capital of Thailand\n\n![5-asian-capitals-11.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmPAr1yMSWD45EowXFtr6mt6utbjJxkvi4SbymMxBpd71D/5-asian-capitals-11.jpeg)\n\nOne of the most famous and visited places in all of Asia: Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, is probably a place where many of you have already been… and not by chance! This city has a lot to offer to tourists and travelers coming from all over the world with a variety of interests: culture, relaxation, entertainment, food, nature, shopping, history.\n\nA quite populated megalopolis, super active 24 hours a day, where you will find something to do at any time and wherever you are.\n\nWell known for its delicious and spicy food: Thai cuisine has become one of the most appreciated of Asia, the culinary specialties are numerous and varied and for sure you will find a dish that will make you want to eat it over and over during your stay in the country.\n\nThe nightlife here is unique: there are some neighborhoods where tourists are concentrated, like the areas around Sukhumvit or the super famous Khaosan Road, but almost everywhere else in city you will find a bar or a place open all night to party.\n\nMarkets are another big attraction of the city: the stalls sell everything during the day, there are also many night markets that remain open until morning where you can eat street food and buy a wide variety of items and clothes at any time that you will spend here in Bangkok. Some are really immense, like Chatuchak’s open on the weekends.\n\nBesides the nighttime follies and some small gluttonies, Bangkok also offers relaxing solutions for the body and soul: Thai massage centers are present in every corner of the capital and the therapies are super pleasant and very cheap. Usually, the massage is quite intense because the pressure exerted on the muscles is strong, but you can request it more delicate and soft.\n\nThe temples, which you will find everywhere, are another way to experience the culture and peace that Buddhism has spread throughout the country. The only smile of the Buddha, which you will see entering religious architecture, is enough to calm the mind without having to use meditation techniques, which you can still practice around here!\n\nOften what you have experienced you can also learn through the various courses that they organize, like Thai cooking, Thai Massage that are often held in temples and meditation classes.\n\nThe Chaophraya River is a beautiful place to visit during the sunset and during all the day the boats that sail it are a good way of transportation that you can use to avoid road traffic. The same can be applied to the various canals in the city, which during the navigation you will pass along really interesting areas to discover.\n\n\n![5-asian-capitals-10-e1551162936179.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmYHwiVb81hGKBdtpHQHz1dyxZZbL7g3m4V8mykvpZBDAc/5-asian-capitals-10-e1551162936179.jpeg)\n\n\nBangkok also has one of the most beautiful Chinatowns I’ve ever seen, take a walk along Yaowarat Road and in the streets and side alleys that will certainly lead you to an alternative city tour. The food in this area is great!\n\nDo not stop at the usual and super touristy Khaosan Road or the crazy Sukhumvit, but get deeper into the city to discover the real Bangkok!\n\nYou can travel around the Thai capital by metro, with the sky-train ( the train that passes on your heads), with taxis (which are really cheap), using the service of Uber or Grab and, my favorite, jump on a boat that sails the Chaophraya River or one of the many canals in the center.\n------------------------------\n\n\nTaipei – Capital of Taiwan\n\n\n![5-asian-capitals-17-e1551162978952.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmQ6VGTv791EHRoSPcacfj4uAypJLqKai1RFJ3kpLfjkRV/5-asian-capitals-17-e1551162978952.jpeg)\n\n\nTaipei is the capital of the beautiful island of Taiwan, animated by night markets that you will find in different areas of the city and where you can have a taste of the special and tasty local food!\n\nA meeting between China and Japan with Western influences, that makes the capital unique and despite being a big city you have the feeling of being in a quiet, pleasant and not suffocating place.\n\n\n![5-asian-capitals-09-e1551163018693.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmQ6Ab6m4CMYtbgrgQdPeCykKdWGZofXHdhc9eTqnKXaKE/5-asian-capitals-09-e1551163018693.jpeg)\n\n\nMany things to do and visit in Taipei: do not miss a photo shoot of the Taipei 101 (one of the tallest skyscrapers in the world) or at Chiang Kai-shek Memorial. The fascinating and ancient Chinese temples that you can find at every corner, parks, museums and numerous festivals will give you an excellent introduction to the local culture.\n\nCulinary delights are one of the highlights of the city, in addition to the markets that sell street food, each area and neighborhood have something distinctive and exquisite to satisfy your appetite. Sometimes you’ll sense a strange smell coming from one of the street food stalls, do not worry, there’s nothing that’s going bad, it’s “stinky tofu” (臭豆腐 / chòudòufu), a specialty that I suggest you try, if you feel like it …\n\nTaipei is not just cement and roads, there are many opportunities for being out with nature: just a few minutes from the center you can take a nice walk in the relaxing Yangmingshan National Park, or have a beautiful view of the city from Mount Xiangshan, also called Elephant Mountain. All destinations easily reached by using the subway. The hot springs are very popular and near the capital there is the sea with the beautiful coast of the island of Taiwan!\n\n\nIt is very easy to get around on foot or with its super effective ways of transport: the subway reaches many areas of the city and is really convenient! You can also rent one of the many bikes of the excellent bike sharing system available everywhere.\n\n------------------------------\n\nSeoul – Capital of South Korea\n\n\n![5-asian-capitals-21.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWfzdsDYUcadDCHcrrqJbUk1J6wn8S9rPeeDP2CkJKKBp/5-asian-capitals-21.jpeg)\n\n\nSeoul, the super-populated capital of South Korea, is perhaps my favorite among many … ok I did not want to make a top 5 … but this is a really nice place to visit.\n\nContrasts are what fascinate me the most in the Asian cities and here in Seoul they are unique, traditional lifestyles mix with the more westernized and modern ones in the super technologically advanced capital of the Asian peninsula which has a deep imprint in the unique and inimitable Korean style!\n\n\n\nA feature that makes me appreciate Seoul is the fact that it’s not as famous as other cities, so there are not yet all the foreigners who for years now had already invaded the other capitals and it is pleasant for me to be one of the few Westerners around here.\n\nSeoul has an explosive nightlife, which is mainly concentrated in the neighborhoods of Hongdae, Itaewon and Gangnam, where fun is overwhelming and inevitable! There are restaurants open 24 hours a day, clubs, live bars and pubs at every corner full of people who want to forget the stress of the day and spend a pleasant evening, which usually extends until late morning.\n\nThe food is great and varied, a unique and intense flavors cuisine, often very spicy but you can also find more soft delights. Sometimes you find really eccentric specialties, like the hongeo (fermented fish) or the san-nakji (an octopus that is served raw and so fresh that the tentacles keep moving in your dish).\n\n\n\nSeoul is surrounded by mountains, which can be a good idea to spend a day in nature, all easily accessible by subway or bus.\n\nA city full of beautiful museums and interesting ancient and modern art: Korean music and films are super famous here in Asia and they are also becoming popular in the rest of the world. As I said, it is a super modern and advanced capital, but besides skyscrapers and buildings you can still find fascinating hanok, the beautiful traditional Korean houses, some kept as private residences transformed into cafes or restaurants. In addition, the center has 5 unique and enchanting royal palaces of the various rulers of the Joseon dynasty that have taken place in the past, including the most famous and important Gyeongbokgung Palace.\n\n\n![5-asian-capitals-19.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdVU4p4AtFWrb1mJqwqzpyvXasFHBCzdurFErpj3fYwx6/5-asian-capitals-19.jpeg)\n\n\nDuring the spring the city is covered with cherry trees in bloom, with branches covered with flowers with white petals to decorate the streets of Seoul, always full of people at every hour of the day.\n\nSeoul is immense, go around on foot is impossible, but fortunately, the Korean capital has a really effective transport network! The subway goes almost anywhere and the system is extended to satellite cities, buses are another great option to use to travel around the city. Uber is not present but taxis are not too expensive.",

The specialty of which I speak in this article comes from Sarawak and is called Kolo Mee, a super tasty dish of egg noodles related to the Malaysian Chinese culture. The Asian pasta this time is served dry and not in broth, it is accompanied by roast pork (called Char siu) which is marinated with soy, honey and spices and then cut into thin slices. Minced meat and shredded spring onion are added. These are the main ingredients that are usually found by ordering the Kolo Mee. Sometimes I ate it served with shallots and fried garlic and, to enrich the dish, you can also add fish balls and wonton (Chinese dumplings). ![kolo-mee-06.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmQeE2LXTbXXzTMpoWr8pXmhhdbJcbzkN7nzSneUYNtFgQ/kolo-mee-06.jpeg) Before eating the egg noodles remember to mix everything well, so that the lard of the pork cover with an oily layer the dry pasta, softening it and giving it an intense and super tasty meaty flavor. This is what makes Kolo Mee special! A dish that you can find everywhere in Malaysia and easily in Singapore, but the best you can have is only in Sarawak!

I was traveling around the Korean peninsula when I happened, quite by chance, to Jeonju: a charming town and capital of the Jeolla province, famous for its beautiful traditional village of typical Korean-style houses called Hanok. While staying in the interesting tourist destination, I get to know some local people who invited me to dinner and make me taste some of the great typical local dishes, including the specialty of Jeonju: Bibimbap – 비빔밥! The colorful dish based on the aquatic cereal cultivated for millennia here in Asia is served in a bowl with the white rice cooked in the famous rice cooker present in all houses and restaurants in South Korea and in many other eastern countries. Then seasoned vegetables called Namul – 나물 are added and all flavored with the addition of kim (dried seaweed) of gochujang – 고추장 (red chili pepper paste, widely used in traditional Korean cuisine), soy sauce and oil and sesame seeds. Sliced strips and egg meat is often added which can be cooked or raw. ![Bibimbap-01.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWofZq7jdTkkfbQ9jWy7dVbqTMdhh17QKwWrwghQYTUJE/Bibimbap-01.jpeg) Bibimbap – 비빔밥 is a simple and cheap dish, characteristics which together with its rich and delicious taste have made it one of the most popular specialties in Korea. Many variations according to the seasonings. You can find the “Hot stone pot bibimbap” or dolsot-bibimbap – 돌솥 비빔밥, which is served in a hot stone bowl, served with raw egg that is cooked on the heated walls of the container. You can add seafood, raw meat, fish (both cooked and raw)… -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Namul – 나물 for Bibimbap – 비빔밥: The vegetables that are added are the most disparate, usually in julienne cut: kimchi, cucumber, spinach, carrots, bean sprouts, courgettes, mushrooms and the delicious gosari (fern stems). ![Bibimbap-02.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWji7WiHyzTNgV1kwYPrDYXCK55p2nVySDyJzm7bxKy6t/Bibimbap-02.jpeg) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How to eat Bibimbap – 비빔밥! The Bibimbap – 비빔밥 is served to you with a bowl full of all the colored elements that season and enhance the taste of the traditional Korean dish, placed in similar doses and which submerge a rich portion of hot rice, all you have to do is just take the spoon and mix it all together to enjoy the delicacy of the Asian peninsula. ![Bibimbap-03.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmQuhpsQGgjCuA4W5pbaaiTUURnigiUGzPsWLM3wGUmsu7/Bibimbap-03.jpeg) The Bibimbap – 비빔밥 is a dish with an “easy” flavor and can be appreciated by everyone since the ingredients that compose it are quite accessible to the palates of practically anyone. Many versions also for vegetarians and vegans. A must try!

body![Kimchi-01.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmRMPC82kBA4vFo2NpVsNNatpMrYDDDZ2GTNFbrvgHsXZG/Kimchi-01.jpeg) I had no idea of the existence of Kimchi – 김치 until I step foot in South Korea and started eating the delicious local food. Every time you sit at a table, whether you are in a restaurant or in a house of some local friend, ready to eat one of the delicacies of Korean cuisine, first you are served a series of saucers full of tasty side dishes called Banchan – 반찬. Surely you will find yourself in front of a white mass of vegetables buried in a deep red dressing that often gives off an intense smell: the most common, adored and inevitable among the specialties of the Asian country, the Kimchi – 김치! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What is Kimchi – 김치? Kimchi – 김치 is the most famous of the traditional Korean local specialties, made with fermented vegetables, dipped in salt and seasoned with various ingredients, among which can not miss the chili red powder that gives it spiciness and color. Other ingredients with which Kimchi is left to ferment are shallots, ginger, garlic and Jeotgal – 젓갈 (salted seafood). The preparation of Kimchi does not take much time but the fermentation process is longer, it is traditionally placed in jars called Onggi – 옹기 for a period ranging from a few days to a few months, depending on the taste more or less intense that you want to get. Today usually plastic containers are used to put the vegetables that are then placed in refrigerators, some of which are specially manufactured for Kimchi. ![Kimchi-03.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmXCMSxdvDjYsvz98Eg637TcSK3DH2wDYj8n9pV8hpmBVH/Kimchi-03.jpeg) It is served as a side dish to every meal in Korea, mainly prepared with cabbage and is generally spicy. The degree of spiciness is variable, the taste is usually intense and perhaps it takes a couple of tastes before being able to fully appreciate it. It goes well with everything from rice to meat, from fish to soups and dumplings but it is also good eaten alone. Kimchi is also used as an ingredient to prepare other dishes such as dumplings (Kimchi Mandu, 만두), pancakes (Kimchi-buchimgae – 김치 부침개), stews (Kimchi-jjigae – 김치 찌개) and various other tasty recipes flavored by the fermented vegetables. ![Kimchi-02.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmVg5ouG6RbTwrVn7KLgNXXrv1HCRg3khEZgcP39HKrLfi/Kimchi-02.jpeg) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A bit of Kimchi history – 김치 In Korea, Kimchi has been eaten for hundreds of years, some even mention its origin during the period of the Three Kingdoms of Korea (Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla) between the 1st century BC. and the 7th century, where vegetables and other fermented foods were used above all thanks to the durability of the nourishment that was prepared in winter and kept throughout the year. The recipe did not yet include the use of hot chili pepper, which was introduced during trade with the Portuguese in the 17th century. Cabbage was also recently introduced in the preparation, around the 19th century, a period in which the version of the modern Kimchi began to take hold throughout the Korean peninsula. ![Kimchi-05.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmPqNp2ZDWiwNqL5uGPxW2DExexTA2rnqkNZqJvCcttoZ8/Kimchi-05.jpeg) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Various types of Kimchi – 김치 Usually, the vegetables used are cabbage (the most common) and white radish, but there are many other variations in the recipe, with different tastes. You can prepare the tasty side dish with cucumbers, aubergines, potatoes, perilla leaves … almost everything! The various types of Kimchi are categorized according to the main ingredient and the region of origin. ![Kimchi-04.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmbL5vyCDVCw7JEpu7pjmy4aTs8RXDcYcsw5QxuJ8UqBou/Kimchi-04.jpeg) There are white Kimchi, where the hot chili pepper powder is not used, the old Kimchi, kept longer to ferment and therefore with a much more intense taste and the fresh Kimchi, less strong.

Today usually plastic containers are used to put the vegetables that are then placed in refrigerators, some of which are specially manufactured for Kimchi.\n\n![Kimchi-03.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmXCMSxdvDjYsvz98Eg637TcSK3DH2wDYj8n9pV8hpmBVH/Kimchi-03.jpeg)\n\nIt is served as a side dish to every meal in Korea, mainly prepared with cabbage and is generally spicy. The degree of spiciness is variable, the taste is usually intense and perhaps it takes a couple of tastes before being able to fully appreciate it. It goes well with everything from rice to meat, from fish to soups and dumplings but it is also good eaten alone.\n\nKimchi is also used as an ingredient to prepare other dishes such as dumplings (Kimchi Mandu, 만두), pancakes (Kimchi-buchimgae – 김치 부침개), stews (Kimchi-jjigae – 김치 찌개) and various other tasty recipes flavored by the fermented vegetables.\n\n![Kimchi-02.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmVg5ouG6RbTwrVn7KLgNXXrv1HCRg3khEZgcP39HKrLfi/Kimchi-02.jpeg)\n\n\n-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------\n\nA bit of Kimchi history – 김치\n\nIn Korea, Kimchi has been eaten for hundreds of years, some even mention its origin during the period of the Three Kingdoms of Korea (Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla) between the 1st century BC. and the 7th century, where vegetables and other fermented foods were used above all thanks to the durability of the nourishment that was prepared in winter and kept throughout the year. The recipe did not yet include the use of hot chili pepper, which was introduced during trade with the Portuguese in the 17th century. Cabbage was also recently introduced in the preparation, around the 19th century, a period in which the version of the modern Kimchi began to take hold throughout the Korean peninsula.\n\n![Kimchi-05.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmPqNp2ZDWiwNqL5uGPxW2DExexTA2rnqkNZqJvCcttoZ8/Kimchi-05.jpeg)\n\n-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------\n\nVarious types of Kimchi – 김치\n\nUsually, the vegetables used are cabbage (the most common) and white radish, but there are many other variations in the recipe, with different tastes. You can prepare the tasty side dish with cucumbers, aubergines, potatoes, perilla leaves … almost everything! The various types of Kimchi are categorized according to the main ingredient and the region of origin.\n\n![Kimchi-04.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmbL5vyCDVCw7JEpu7pjmy4aTs8RXDcYcsw5QxuJ8UqBou/Kimchi-04.jpeg)\n\nThere are white Kimchi, where the hot chili pepper powder is not used, the old Kimchi, kept longer to ferment and therefore with a much more intense taste and the fresh Kimchi, less strong.",

Traveller, nomad, sort of artist. Years ago I’ve been fascinated by the magic of the nomadic life: traveling in the world is like traveling in myself. We learn a lot, we put ourselves to the test, we grow up. This pushed me towards the life I am living, to look for a new way of being in this world: free, outside the conditioning of our society, independent. In the end, we have only one life to live! Home has become every place where I take off my backpack. ----------------------- Asia: I’ve loved Asia from the first time I set foot in it. I’ve visited several Eastern countries, living and traveling, discovering a little more about “the good” and “the bad”, the points in common and the differences, the limits and the potential of the various cultures and our human race. ----------------------- Nomadic Perceptions: I make my posts to start sharing with you what I’m experiencing lately and my nomadic perceptions of the last years. The people I meet, the food I eat, the places I visit, some invented and some real stories. Take what you need and share it!

You will definitely sit at the table of a Korean restaurant and find on the menu this delicious and creamy drink, with a soft slightly sweet but also sour taste, with a not excessive alcoholic percentage, usually from 6 to 8 degrees, just over a normal beer and much less than a grape wine. Among the various spirits produced in South Korea it is in my opinion the most delicious and does not create particular headaches as soju – 소주 could do in my case. It is always a pleasure to meet with some friends and share a bottle of makgeolli – 막걸리, interesting to try different and new qualities from various regions of the Korean peninsula and from new artisan producers. A cup is never enough, especially accompanied by some tasty traditional South Korean dish! ![Makgeolli-03-Makgeolli-and-anju.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmf276Hm3cjMBWzpCiv8eK3RtEUFryAbftSzznAnip4x6t/Makgeolli-03-Makgeolli-and-anju.jpeg) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Makgeolli – 막걸리 A bit of history Makgeolli – 막걸리 is one of the oldest Korean drinks, it has been distilling and happily drinking for more than two thousand years. It was prepared at home and consumed mainly by the poorer social classes, and then became the most famous alcoholic drink in South Korea between the 60s and 70s. It lost popularity when they began to import alcohol-based products from abroad to the Asian peninsula, but in the last twenty years it has returned to be popular, mainly thanks to its beneficial properties and is now found everywhere and in many versions with different flavors. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How Makgeolli is made – 막걸리 The Makgeolli – 막걸리 is produced with rice to which is added the nuruk – 누룩 a tablet made of cereals that helps the start of the fermentation process, also used to produce various other alcoholic drinks such as the super-popular soju – 소주. The nuruk – 누룩 can be made with rice, wheat, or barley producing a Makgeolli – 막걸리 with different flavors. Other ingredients can also be added to flavor the alcohol-based product such as chestnuts or herbs which are then mixed and left to ferment for about a couple of weeks to be ready to drink. Makgeolli – 막걸리 has various flavors, practically every region has its own unique recipe, it can be sparkling or still. Do you want to try to make Makgeolli – 막걸리 at home? On Amazon, they sell a starter kit that will let you brew your own Korean alcohol!! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How to drink Makgeolli – 막걸리 Makgeolli – 막걸리 is drunk when it’s fresh, usually no more than two weeks after it is ready. It is served cold and must be mixed before drinking, if you buy the bottle before opening it turn it upside down a couple of times to lift the sediments from the bottom. Be careful because there are versions that are super sparkling and if you open them too quickly after shaking them you will find the white liquid even on the ceiling! Then open and close the bottle, gradually releasing the gas contained inside. In restaurants, makgeolli – 막걸리 can be served in a large ceramic bowl and poured with a ladle, in a kind of metal teapot or simply sold in 75cl plastic bottles. ![Makgeolli-02-Makgeolli-bowl.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmZ1Lqszgr2XMjLgY4iGFmtjtHky1G1jmbBzdHfeTWNsJV/Makgeolli-02-Makgeolli-bowl.jpeg) It is poured and drunk in aluminum or ceramic bowls. Having returned to being a popular drink, variants were born where fruit and ice were added, to then be served as trendy cocktails. The perfect way to consume makgeolli – 막걸리 is to enjoy it by eating a tasty jeon, the traditional Korean pancake or bindae-tteok, another type of fried food. Koreans always say it’s a perfect combination for rainy days! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Where to find the Makgeolli – 막걸리 You can taste it in restaurants or in some specialized places where they sell and produce the drink, here you will also find the anju: the food that is consumed in South Korea while drinking alcohol. You can also buy it in convenience stores and supermarkets, usually sold cheaply. ![Makgeolli-01-Makgeolli-bottles.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmPJv1gycgCLYawzthdczQThdJqMPNdPcTrkQAt4i4xHUJ/Makgeolli-01-Makgeolli-bottles.jpeg) Makgeolli – 막걸리 a drink with beneficial properties During the fermentation of the makgeolli – 막걸리 some microorganisms such as yeast and lactic acid bacteria similar to the one present in the yogurt are generated which makes it a probiotic product, perfect for the health of your intestine! It is also rich in fiber and vitamins. An excellent reason to drink another bowl of the delicious white alcoholic liquid from the Korean tradition!
