      "body": "Wen stepped calmly out of the office building and shut the door behind her. Head held high, she rounded the corner before she sighed and slumped her shoulders. Another useless interview was over with. She failed spectacularly at emitting any air of confidence, and that was where she always screwed up every interview.\n\nShe continued down the street, hands in her pockets, head lowered. There was no point looking in shop windows as she passed by; she had no money to be frivolous with, in fact, she’d had to take the afternoon off work for this interview.\n\nThe whole world seemed hopeless, Wen’s life seemed directionless, and she felt the weight of it all for the whole train journey home. Once she stepped out into the open air of the train station near home and the doors closed behind her, though, she decided that it wasn’t worth stressing over. Maybe the feeling she’d gotten had been wrong, and the interview wasn’t a miserable failure. Maybe it was, but there would always be other interviews, there'd always be other jobs.\n\nWen’s optimistic mood stayed with her as she walked through the hallway to her apartment, ready to get out of her stuffy interview clothes and relax. Wen paused on her approach when she noticed the woman leaning on the wall and reading a book beside her door. She was professionally dressed, too, and Wen wondered if this was something job-related that required a house call.\n\n“Hi,” Wen ventured as she got closer. The woman snapped her book shut and met Wen’s gaze with a serious expression. “Can I help you with something?”\n\n“Are … are you Wenona Brennan?” She seemed worried, despite the calm air she had while she’d been reading.\n\n“I am …” Wen couldn’t help but catch her nervous mood.\n\nThe woman sighed in relief. She held out her hand. “My name is Idra. Do you think I could come inside to talk?”\n\nWen took her hand and shook it, somewhat confused at the interaction thus far. Idra seemed too eager to see her for this to be anything about a job, or even a sale or charity. “Um, okay.”\n\nIdra held onto her hand for a moment, as though she sensed the reason for Wen’s hesitation. “It’s about your family.”\n\n“My …” Wen pulled away in shock and fumbled for her keys and with her door lock, but her efforts to open the door faster only made it more difficult. As she finally got the key into the lock, Idra put a hand over hers.\n\n“I’m sorry,” she said. “I didn’t mean to worry you. It’s not about your immediate family, so there’s nothing to be scared of.”\n\nWen let out a long, heavy sigh and turned the handle to let herself and Idra into the apartment. She didn’t need a scare like that today. Her grandmother, aunt, uncle and cousins were the only family she had, and she didn't know what she'd do if something happened to them. She led Idra into the front room and had her sit on the couch. “Can I get you something to drink?”\n\n“I’d prefer to just get this over with, if you don’t mind. I’m not sure if you’ll want to throw me out after I say what I came to say.”\n\nWen sat in the seat next to Idra and frowned. “What part of my family is this about?”\n“It’s about your family history on your mother's side, and I want to start at the complicated part: one of your ancestors was royalty, and so, Wenona, you’re the legitimate heir.”\n\nWen couldn’t help it, she laughed. At Idra’s horrified look, she stopped quickly, but there was no way this wasn’t a joke. “I’m a royal heir? Like, of a foreign country?”\n\n“It's something like that, but it's far more complicated.”\n\n“How do you know about this? I think it’s something my grandparents would have mentioned, or they'd have left some letter or something regarding it.”\n\n“I work in the royal archives, and there’s a family tree that led me to you.”\n\n“And you’re sure it’s me? Am I the only one? What about the rest of the family tree?”\n\n“It’s … complicated again, sorry. Most of your family is impossible to find, so it’s just you. And as for whether I’m sure, I wouldn’t have come here if I hadn’t done all the research, but there is a test we can do.”\n\n“That makes sense.” Wen leaned back into the couch. “So why now?”\n\n“We’ve actually been looking for the heir for a long time, we’ve been without our monarchy for many years, and we need our ruler back.”\n\n“If you’ve run out of royal family members, isn’t it about time you maybe thought of another system — democracy, maybe, Or even choosing a new king or queen — rather than picking up a long-lost heir from a foreign country?”\n\n“It’s … not exactly that simple, Wenona. You see …” Idra took a deep breath. “I know this isn’t something you can understand right now, but it has to do with magic.”\n\n“Magic? Where is this kingdom, the fairy world?”\n\nIdra jerked forward and grabbed Wen’s hand, a serious look on her face. “You knew already?”\n\nWen pulled her hand gently out of Idra’s grasp. “That was a joke,” she rushed out. “It was supposed to be a joke. Are you saying that you really think I’m a fairy princess?”\n\nIdra sighed, letting Wen have her personal space back. “I was going to get to that after you were used to the idea of magic, but now we’ll have to skip the part where I ease you into the idea and tell you everything at once.\n\n“First, since I know there’s no magic in the human world, and the only way I can convince you is for you to witness magic yourself …” Idra held her hand up and one of the coasters flew from the coffee table into her palm. She held it out to Wen.\n\n“That … that was pretty cool, I have to admit. But magicians do a good job of making it look like they’re doing the same thing. You could have just tricked me into thinking the coaster actually …” Wen trailed off as the woman in front of her started shrinking. It was surreal, and even though she had called the last display a trick, she was sure now that she was going crazy. Two small, translucent, leaf shaped wings became more and more pronounced on Idra’s back as she shrunk, almost like she was shrinking into them. Wen was transfixed and couldn't look away.\n\nWhen Idra was about the size of Wen’s hand, standing on the chair, she fluttered her wings to lift herself into the air and landed on Wen’s knee. Wen opened and closed her mouth a few times, but couldn’t say anything. The process hadn't taken long at all, but Wen felt like she'd just watched the woman shrink in slow motion.\n\n“I’m sorry about shocking you this way,” the little fairy-Idra said in her tiny squeak of a voice. “But because of your lack of magic, I know that humans are hard to convince of its existence.”\n\nWen stared at Idra for a while longer before finally finding her voice. “So you think I’m a fairy, too?”\n\n“Actually,” Idra flicked her wings again and rose into the air so that she was closer to Wen’s face and her words were clearer. She looked into Wen’s eyes as she spoke, “I’m a pixie, not a fairy. The fey kingdom that we come from has two types of fey: fairies and pixies, but you’re not really either. The royal family is a mix of pixie, fairy and human.”\n\n“So you don’t think I’m not human, just not entirely human.” Wen wanted to slump backwards, but she couldn’t tear her gaze away from Idra’s tiny eyes. “What do you want me to do? What is the test to see if I’m … part fey or not?”\n\n“I want you to come to the fey world with me. You don’t have to choose right away whether you want to be the princess or not, but I’d like for you to come see what our world is like and make up your own mind.”\n\nWen gave a short laugh. “You want me to just go with you? A woman who might just be a crazy person who thinks she’s a pixie and knows some magic tricks?”\n\nIdra bowed her head. “I understand that it will take some time to get to know me and decide whether you’ll come or not, but I came here with the hope that you’d give me a chance and eventually believe me. So will you consider it?”\n\nWen stared intently at the pixie in front of her, trying to figure if there was any way it could be a trick. Her wings weren’t large enough to keep her aloft, but she supposed the answer would be magic. The tiny facial features were earnestly waiting for an answer, and Wen was taken in by her adorableness. Who wouldn’t want fairies to be real?\n\n“Give me some time to get to know you, so I can see if magic is real or not. But I just couldn’t say no to visiting another world.”\n\nIdra beamed, the giant smile making her tiny face all the more adorable. “That’s wonderful! I won’t take up any more of your time this evening, but perhaps we can meet up tomorrow morning?”\n\n“That sounds fine.” Wen got up in a bit of a daze and followed Idra as she flew around the corner into the entryway.\n\nIn the doorway, Idra grew back to her human-sized self, and while Wen looked her over, trying to figure out if it was really a trick, she noticed a tiny bulge on Idra’s back under her clothes and reached out to touch it. Idra spun to face Wen and smiled.\n\n“Wings are the only thing a fey can’t change about their appearance, so I can’t make them disappear when I’m trying to look like a human.” She gestured toward her back. “Thankfully, they’re not really obvious unless you’re looking for them, and they have the tendency to hide underneath human clothes, too.”\n\n“Oh.” Wen was at a loss for what to say. She’d already accepted that all of this had the possibility of being true, but the small observation of Idra’s wings had somehow made it even more plausible. “I’ll … uh … I’ll see you tomorrow, then. Meet me here, but we won’t stay here, we’ll go out for coffee.”\n\n“I’ll meet you here at nine, then.”\n\nIdra’s smile as they said their goodbyes was so genuine and disarming, it left Wen confused. After she’d left, Wen stumbled back into the lounge room and flopped onto the couch. “What?” she asked the ceiling. “What, what, what, what, what?”\n\nThe door opened and closed, and Gwen appeared around the corner. Wen tilted her head to look at her upside-down flatmate. Gwen frowned.\n\n“Wen, you look a bit worried,” she said, sitting in the chair opposite.\n\nWen sat up to face her. “Not worried, just … confused, I guess? I don’t even know what’s going on any more.”\n\n“Bad interview?” Gwen gave her a sympathetic smile.\n\n“No. Well, yes. But that’s not what …” Wen waved her hand. “Never mind.” She stood up. “Now you’re home, I’ll get dinner started. I couldn’t earlier because I had company.” Wen walked towards the kitchen.\n\n“And this company is why you’re so out of it?” Gwen called from behind her.\nWen stopped and turned around, but she didn’t meet Gwen’s eyes, instead looking down at the floor. “It was someone who knew things about my family that I didn’t know.”\n\n“And that’s what has you all worked up? What could be so bad?”\n\n“Not bad, just confusing. I’ll work it out, it’s okay.” Wen shot Gwen what she hoped was a genuine smile. It seemed to work, because Gwen didn’t look concerned.\n\n“As long as you know you can talk to me about anything, Wen.”\n\nWen gave a genuine grin in return. “Of course! Thanks!”",

Millie wasn't much interested in art, she hadn't been since she was a kid, but her friend Danni had insisted that it would be fun and dragged her along. \n\nFollowing behind Danni, not taking her eyes from the back of her red shirt and long flowing brown hair, Millie waved off  an Indian girl offering to paint her hand with henna, shook her head at a dark-skinned boy offering to show her a patchwork quilt, and brushed past a group of students holding feathery masks in front of their faces and laughing. Danni stopped suddenly and spun to face her, a big smile on her face. \n\n“You gotta do this one, at least,” she pleaded.\n\nMillie had rolled her eyes when Danni asked her to do aboriginal dot painting and stepped away at the prospect of weaving dreamcatchers or making a death mask. Danni wasn’t one to do anything alone, so Millie had patiently waited beside her at each stall, actually enjoying watching, even if she had no desire to do it herself. Origami, though?  There was a time when Millie had been interested in the Japanese art of paper folding.\n\nMillie sighed and agreed to weave a paper fish along with Danni. As she was handed a square of green paper she began reading the instructions, confident in her ability to do it herself, as she had spent many of her younger years filling her house with paper cranes, butterflies and frogs. There was a skinny, black-haired Asian guy showing the eager crowd how to fold properly, and she glanced up at him as she fumbled with her paper. She was trying to work out how she’d managed to fold the her project into a triangle when the paper ornament was pulled out of her hands.\n\n“No,” the guy said gently, “like this.”\n\nMillie looked at the white spot in the corner of his black shirt rather than at what he was doing, and when he placed it back in her hands, he guided her to pull the strips together and straighten it out.\n\n“Thanks,” Millie gave a small smile, masking her irritation. Though she was frustrated, she wasn’t going to be rude. She held the delicate object with both hands and smirked as the impatient guy grabbed Danni’s to help her finish as well. A tingling flutter in her hands made Millie look down at her fish again, and she saw the little paper creature waving its fins in the\nair. \n\nShe stared for a second, horrified, as it started to work its way upright, as though waking up. She hurriedly shoved it into her jacket pocket.\n\nDanni turned around, holding up her own masterpiece with pride.\n\nMillie raised her eyebrows and smiled. “Uni bar?”\n\n“Uni bar,” Danni agreed with a nod.\n\n\nMillie and Danni weren't the only psych students having a post-fair drink. They met up and crowded around a small round table in the middle of the crowded bar. Of course it was busy. As university students, it was their duty to celebrate any and all events with beer. \n\nEven after getting a few drinks into her system and joining in on chatting, Millie hadn't been able to force her attention away from the paper fish in her pocket. She excused herself from the gathering and headed to the bathroom. \n\nThe open bathroom wasn't enclosed enough, even though it was empty, and Millie pushed into the cubicle, locked the door and put the seat down, sitting and unzipping her pocket before reaching in and gingerly pulling out what really turned out to be a squirming paper creature. She held it in front of her face, watching it struggle to get out of her grip and barely believing what was right in front of her eyes. She let it go and it swam through the air like a real fish would swim in water, green paper fins flowing gently with its movements, slits that had opened like gills pushing in and out as though it was actually breathing. After a loop in the air, it hovered in front of Millie’s face.\n\nIt made no attempt to get away, and when Millie opened her hand slowly the fish settled there. Millie's hand shook and the paper brushed against her skin. She took a deep breath, and then another, willing herself to calm down. \n\nAs her breathing became more erratic, she stood and slammed her hand into the wall, palm hitting plastic with a thud.  Dread reached her heart as she felt the crunching of tiny bones under her fingers – bones that shouldn’t have been there in the first place. Life  that shouldn't exist drained away from the small creature and Millie shuddered, removing her hand and watching normal, scrunched-up paper fall to the floor. She quickly left the cubicle, splashed her face with water at the sink and stared at her reflection in the mirror. She couldn’t tell if she was looking pale or if her face was always that white.\n\nShe returned to the group and  downed the drink she had left unfinished, trying to calm her anxious shaking. It had no effect, and she grabbed her bag. “I’ve got to go, I’m not feeling well,” she declared. Fending off the concerned words and offers of company home, she turned from the curious looks of her friends and strode with confidence to the exit. As soon as she’d made it around the corner and out of their sight, she took off running for home in the evening light. \n\n\nIt was dark, and Millie was exhausted by the time she got back home. Once she had safely stepped over the threshold of her apartment, she slammed the door closed with her back, breathing erratically and looking around the room in a panic.\n\nRunning had the benefit of clearing out her mind of unnecessary thoughts, but she had had plenty of time to think on the bus ride, and now she was home and completely alone with her thoughts. Was she crazy? There was no way that fish had come to life in front of her, there was no way she had crushed tiny bones under her hands. There was just no way. \n\nShe focused on slowing down her breathing and paused her frantic gaze on her coffee table, piled high with notebooks for lecture notes and psychology textbooks, other random papers and her bible, open to where she had last been reading the night before. The sight of her familiar disarray calmed her and she pushed herself off the door, grabbing her favourite mug from its position nestled in the middle of the mess and heading for the kitchen. She paused on her way to frown and run her finger through the dust on her bookshelf. Her mother wouldn’t be happy if she knew how dirty her apartment was. She put the mug down and twisted the gold signet ring she had on; the peace that came from her normal surroundings was giving way to a nervous panic about the fish again. \n\nHoping the even more calming familiarity of her room would quieten her mind once more, Millie stepped in and straightened her crumpled sheets. The sheet swished against the carpet, and Millie had the sudden urge to pull out a box of her old things and look through it, something tugging at her memory. She sat on the floor and the box out into the middle of the floor, removing piles of photos and old journals to uncover a slightly lopsided clay dog. Picking him up gently, she pushed some papers and a packet of chewing gum on her bedside table to the side so she could place it flat next to the alarm clock, kneeling to watch closely.\n\n“I must be crazy,” she mumbled after the digital number ticked over a third minute. She poked the dog and he fell over. “Definitely crazy.” She watched it for another few seconds until her stomach growled and she left the dog where it was to get something easy to eat.\n\n\n\nWith a plate of sandwiches and a cup of tea in her favourite mug, Millie sat on the couch and stared at the coffee table in front of her. Her stack of scrap paper made her think once more about the days when she had been fond of creating origami animals. She couldn’t seem to get the paper fish out of her mind, and averted her eyes to look at the dusty, blank screen of her small television as she chewed her ham sandwich. There was a line through the dust on the TV, a reminder of another time when she had the thought of dusting, but never got around to it.\n\nAs she finished her first sandwich, Millie’s eyes were drawn over and over to a stack of paper. She sighed as she realised that she wouldn’t be able to set her mind to anything else until she folded another paper fish and proved to herself that they did not come to life. Placing her plate on top of a textbook, she carefully tore an A4 page into a square. She fumbled again as she tried to remember the steps on the poster at the stall, but was disappointed that when she got to the last step she had done by herself just a few hours earlier, she forgot what came after. \n\nIt was the fault of the irritatingly impatient Asian guy. She pictured the set of instructions and reached out for her tea. It was a little cold and she gulped down the rest of it, then looked at the twisted and creased paper in front of her. There was no way she was going to remember how it was done. She’d tried and she’d failed to recreate that situation and in doing so had finally put her mind at rest. She picked up both her plate and her textbook and turned to the chapter they would go over in the lecture the next morning.\n\n----\n----\n> \n> This is a story that I originally started writing as a uni assignment. I think I should probably keep writing it.  The idea has been around since I was in high school, actually. And I think it could go to an interesting place. Or maybe it would be okay as a standalone.\n> \n> So I looked that that first line so. many. times. And I really couldn't get it to work. It's terrible, I know. With an ending in mind, I might be able to re-write the beginning with some sort of foreshadowing, maybe? Because I accept that this is imperfect, I left it.\n> \n> Comments are super welcome.       "body": "D\"OH!  You caught me.  \n\nThanks for the compliments.  I haven't fared well with poetry, but I do like this one.  It was done for a writer's workshop class.  The teacher was very critical, but the other students loved it.  It was probably just a nice break from all the melodramatic, teen angst ridden poems that most of the other kids were churning out.  (Hey it was the 90's.  Grunge was in.)\n\nI may eventually try my hand at children's stories.  That might be an opportunity to do some more rhyming.",
