I worked at an IT company for 8 years and 3 months, fighting my way from a customer service desk job to a customer care manager position that allowed me to travel the world and finally get a glimpse of how people that make more money than they can spend actually live. I just told my boss that I’ve been sexually harassed by my female director for the past 6 years and I’m in a meeting with my company founder (male), CEO (or ‘The Master Mind’ as the site profile says, also male) and COO (dubbed ‘The Soul Giver’, female and in therapy for the last decade). \n\nIf you have ever had to fire someone, you will probably recognize the familiar feeling of the few minutes right before you start the gruesome part of the conversation. When you’re waiting for the other people attending the meeting to show up, or just waiting for someone to finish their conversation or whatever they are currently looking at on their laptops. It’s weird when you find yourself on the other end of this situation. The CEO and COO were sitting in front of me, casually discussing the tennis match that was running on mute at the other end of the room. The founder is leaning down on his laptop, looking at something… most probably the sales of the day or just orders coming in s usual. Wait… that’s a bit mean. It was probably something really important, like a mail from HR or legal, finalizing the options they had for me. They all act as if nothing is actually happening, and what else can you do? Whenever you’re in a room and you all pretty much know what the outcome is going it be, it’s just normal to avoid the truth for as long as you can. The founder is finally done, he sits down and we’re ready to start. \n        \nLong story short - I’m handed a piece of paper to sign. They are telling me that if I ever want to find a job in this city, it’s best for me to just sign, acknowledging that I quit on my own and just move on with my life. That’s how things happen in third world countries. Even if your company has operated mainly in the states and all over the world for the last decade. You don’t really have a lot of options. Specially if you’re a man. And let’s just say that being gay or bisexual doesn’t really help. Even being a woman doesn’t help. The only thing that can save you is being pregnant. Did I mention that I had a pregnant girlfriend living with me at the time as well? Yes, I was just about to lose my job, just a few weeks after I found out that she’s pregnant. You might ask - why go for such a risky move, if you pretty much know what will happen? Here’s why:\n\nWhen I found out I was gonna have a baby I decided that I will no longer lie to myself or anyone else, and the traumatic experience of being harassed every single day at work was finally going to end. Because truth is more important that money, right? \n\n2. I wanted it to finally end.\n\n3. Part of me hoped they would understand and things would have a happy ending. Just like in the movies. \n\n4. I was slowly but gradually going mad. A few month later a psychiatrist would diagnose me with schizophrenia and a bipolar disorder.  \n\nI’m still sitting in the room. Feeling a smile stretching on my lips. I’m signing the paper, I hugged all three of them. For a moment I had this glimpse of Fight Club in my head, wondering what would happen if I just let go of my anxiety right here, right now. I keep smiling. I walk out the door. Go fetch my company laptop, sign a bunch of papers with accounting, all of this being overseen by the head of HR.
