| body | In today's media landscape, it seems every channel out there has at least one “premium” show. Their Breaking Bad, their Mad Men, their Game of Thrones, and all of them are vying for your attention like loud spoilt toddlers, screaming for sweets. In many ways, this is a good thing as it means there are more options than ever before. In this brave new world of television being as good as film, if not better in some cases, you should never find yourself wanting for a show to watch. And yet somehow, that’s not the case - the amount of options available can be paralysing and just how many nights have you found yourself bored and not found a single thing worthwhile on Netflix? Despite the seemingly endless amount of choice, you can’t find anything you want to watch. Of course, it’s made all the worse by the fact that you don’t want to start watching a show only to find out it’s terrible after you’ve invested 45 minutes in the first episode – and what if you start watching something only to find it gets terrible in the second season after the studio cut the budget and changed half the cast? And, honestly, how many times have you started watching something only to find out it ends on a cliff-hanger and was cancelled after the first season? We’ve all been there, and we’ve all been burned, and there’s only so many times you can go through it before you give up and spend your evenings watching re-runs of Mock the Week on Dave rather than risk going through all that again. In fact, you’re beginning to wonder why you even pay for those streaming services anymore, you’re pretty sure you’ve seen everything worth watching on all of them and you never even use them these days. Maybe you could save the money you’re wasting on them every month and go out with your friends, or do something like join the gym. Well, before you make any rash decisions that involve going outside and doing things with so-called “other people”, I’m here to stage an intervention. Here’s a list of ten shows that are not only well worth your investment, but have never quite attained the mass recognition they deserve. There’s bound to be something here that you’ve missed in all the white noise that passes for our media landscape these days and if there isn’t? … well maybe you should join that gym. You clearly watch too much TV. 10. Maron. Despite performing since the 80s, stand-up comedian Marc Maron never achieved any real recognition until his podcast, WTF with Marc Maron, took off in the early 2010s. Marc’s brutal honesty about himself and his shortcomings inspired his guests to open up in ways they never had before, and before anyone knew it, it had become a must-listen podcast for anyone with a slight interest in comedy. This created an odd dynamic; while he was now best known as an interviewer, he still considered himself primarily a comedian – and it’s this uneasy tension between his public and private persona that drives his sitcom, Maron. Maron (the sitcom) is perhaps best described as more neurotic, misanthropic Louis, with each episode dealing with Marc’s attempts to be a decent person whilst continuing to struggle for recognition in spite of his recent successes. Thrown into this mix are Marc’s numerous demons, his anger problems and struggles with sobriety, all of which become increasingly relevant as the show goes on. If you’re a fan of Louis, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia or just low-key sitcoms in general, you owe it yourself to check out Maron. 9. SPACED. SPACED is, from start to finish, a love letter to the media saturated lives of twenty somethings and every episode is packed with a pop culture references, parodies, and homages. Created by Simon Pegg and Jessica Stevenson, directed by Edgar Wright and starring the creators themselves and Nick Frost, SPACED manages to accomplish the difficult fear of being both surreal and offbeat, yet entirely relatable at the same time. Jessica Stevenson has said in interviews that the idea for the show was to take anecdotes like “I once worked at this place and it was exactly like One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and make them reality. While it only has 12 episodes, SPACED is necessary for any fan of Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg’s later work, or just fans of British comedy in general. Densely packed with jokes and references, which make repeat viewings incredibly rewarding, SPACED is a sadly underappreciated gem and well worth giving a few hours of your life to. 8. Bosch. Based on the books by Michael Connolly, Bosch tells the story of Harry Bosch, a detective fighting both a dense underworld of crime and his personal shortcomings, set against a background of gritty Hollywood noir. While the show is slow moving, it’s completely engaging, holding your attention with its drip feed of information until the climax where everything comes to a head. What saves Bosch from being more than just an above average police procedural is Titus Welliver as the main character, a role he inhabits totally, giving Bosch a heavy world-weary demeanour, as if he knows his battle is ultimately a pointless one, which is something that becomes increasingly obvious as each season progresses. While it’s not for everyone, if you’re a fan of Terriers and similar crime dramas, Bosch may be your new favourite show. 7. Banshee Banshee is the best character driven drama since Breaking Bad, with a complicated plot underpinned by realistic characters who find themselves in increasingly desperate situations. The story begins with an unnamed charismatic criminal, recently released from prison for diamond theft, assuming the identity of Banshee, PA’s recently murdered sheriff, Lucas Hood. From there we’re plunged into a world of complicated morality and constant paranoia as Lucas attempts to balance his life of crime with his new duties as the sheriff of Banshee whilst hiding from a Ukrainian crime lord he doubled crossed years ago and attempting to patch things up with his estranged wife, who is now living under an assumed identity and is married with a family. As the series goes on, Lucas finds himself increasingly at odds with both the people and the criminal element of Banshee which only gets worse as things begin to escalate on all fronts. Banshee is a phenomenal series, with a great visual style, tense dynamic plotting, and great characters. In a world where every crime show is the “best thing since Breaking Bad”, Banshee is one of the few that managed to live up to that effusive praise. 6. Togetherness. With the recent debut of Room 104, it’s worth checking out the Duplass Brothers’ underappreciated Togetherness. Building on their semi-improvised films, Togetherness focuses on Brett and Michelle Pierson (played by Mark Duplass and Melanie Lynskey), a married couple in a rut who have their low-key existence shattered by the sudden arrival of Brett’s best friend Alex (Steve Zissis) and Michelle’s sister Tina (Amanda Peet). Togetherness has the feel of a good indie film, helped by its use of loose plotting with strong characterisation to build a funny but tension filled atmosphere as the influence of Alex and Tina strains the household and exposes the deep painful flaws in Brett and Michelle’s stale marriage with each passing episode. Your enjoyment of Togetherness will hinge upon your stomach for “mumblecore” and similar low key indie films, but if you’re a fan of any of the Duplass Brothers other work, or enjoyed Joe Swanberg’s Easy then you should feel right at home here. 5. Bored to Death Everyone has that show they wished could have one more season. Maybe even just one more episode. A show they loved so much they wished it didn’t have to end at all. For me, that show is Bored to Death, an off-kilter detective show that’s so much more than that. After making an impulsive decision to post an ad posing as a private detective on Craigslist, Johnathon Ames (Jason Schwartzman) is plunged into an increasingly complex series of cases, which he then struggles to juggle with his out-of-control ego, his real job, his relationship troubles and both his drinking and drug habits. Co-Starring Ted Danson as his insane and hyper-demanding boss at the magazine he works for and Zach Galifianakis as his best friend, Bored to Death (after a few shaky episodes) eventually settled into a groove with clever scripting and laugh out loud funny lines and becomes yet another great show that no-one watched while it was airing. If you’ve never seen it, you need to rectify that right now and see exactly why it inspires such devotion among its fans. 4.The League First things first, your enjoyment of The League will depend heavily on your enjoyment of improvised humour. If you think it’s annoying and rarely builds to a satisfying punchline, then you should give this one a miss and move onto number three. For the rest of you, let me introduce The League, an ensemble comedy about five friends who take fantasy football a little bit too seriously. With a cast made up solely of veteran improvisers (Mark Duplass, Paul Scheer, Nick Kroll, Stephen Rannassizzi and Katie Aselton), the show can be hit and miss at times, but when it hits, it hits hard. Every year the five get together to compete for the prestigious Shiva Bowl (named after the girl one of the characters lost his virginity too and complete with her year book photo) and hopefully avoid the dreaded Sacko Bowl, a prize given to the very worst participant. From episode one, the show quickly builds up inside jokes, call backs and memorable lines that make it perfect for binge watching entire seasons in one sitting. If you’re a fan of Judd Apatow or It’s Always Sunny, then this might be exactly what you’re looking for. 3. The Path. After a short, but nevertheless notable absence, Aaron Paul makes his triumphant return to the small screen with The Path, a dark drama about loss of faith in a religious cult. Paul plays Eddie Lane, a devout Meyerist, who experiences a crisis of faith after an epiphany during a retreat that was meant to deepen his faith and move him up the ladder. Haunted by doubts and nagging questions that he can’t share with his devout wife (played by the ever-underrated Michelle Monaghan), Eddie begins to question everything around him and finds himself having to choose between the truth or his faith and family. At its best, The Path feels like a ticking time bomb, each passing second counting down to the moment when Eddie’s doubts will catch up with him and even at its most meandering and slow, the show is still worth watching for Aaron Paul giving it his all, even when it seems like the script isn’t. After a rocky start, The Path has become compulsive, addictive viewing and is worth seeking out if you’re a fan of things like The Leftovers. 2. Top of The Lake Jane Campion’s detective drama may be the best crime drama since True Detective – and that’s not something I’d say lightly. Mad Men’s Elisabeth Moss plays Robin Griffin, a detective sent to investigate the unexplained pregnancy and subsequent disappearance of a twelve-year-old girl in the small town of Laketop in New Zealand. Moss is perfectly cast, playing Robin as a broken but tough sex crimes investigator who is single minded in her mission to find the missing twelve-year-old, bringing herself to the brink of madness as she uncovers the towns dark secrets and edges ever closer to discovering exactly what happened. To say much more would spoil too much of what awaits you, as the twists and turns should be experienced, not spoiled. An atmospheric and intricately plotted detective story, Jane Campion draws on all her experience as a director on films like The Piano and Bright Star, to create a darkly beautiful show, where the environment is just as oppressive and violent as the crime itself, where fog and water meet and blur the lines just as much as lies and omissions blur the lines between the innocent and guilty. Top of the Lake should jump straight to the top of your “watch” queue, right now. 10. You’re the Worst. You’re the Worst takes the trappings and tropes of a rom-com and applies them to the very last people who would ever expect to find themselves in that situation. Two toxic, and utterly unlikable people, who leave a trail of broken hearts, one-night stands and irreparable relationships in their wake and don’t lose a single night of sleep over it. After a chance encounter at a wedding, Gretchen Cutler (Aya Cash) and Jimmy Shrive-Overly (Chris Geere) discover that while they may be terrible for almost everyone else, they are perfect for each other – and so begins a deeply dysfunctional but incredibly touching relationship, as the arrogant and pretentious writer Jimmy attempts to live happily ever after with the ever cynical and selfish Gretchen. Accompanied by Jimmy’s PTSD riddled, ex-soldier roommate Edgar (Desmin Borges), Gretchen’s oversexed, equally selfish best friend Lindsay (Kether Donahue), her nerdy, quiet husband Paul (Allan McLeod), Lindsay’s sister and Jimmy’s ex Becca and her submissive, bro-ish doctor husband, Vernon (Todd Robert Anderson), the two of them attempt something resembling a normal relationship, and while failing, nevertheless finding themselves growing increasingly attached to each other. What makes You’re the Worst special is that it’s more than just another dark comedy, cloned from the DNA of It’s Always Sunny. You’re the Worst doesn’t shy away from the fact that Jimmy and Gretchen are broken people who’ve been hurt. Jimmy’s rejected marriage proposal to Becca fundamentally changed him, just as Gretchen’s lonely upbringing and lifelong depression struggles changed her, and neither was for the better. While it could have been just another dark comedy, You’re the Worst takes the time to empathize with its characters and makes them real people you genuinely feel for. You’re the Worst walks a tight rope between comedy and drama, and never sways too far one way or the other, finding a perfect balance. Sharply written, fast paced and not afraid of wearing its heart on its sleeve, You’re the Worst is a show you should have started watching three years ago, so why not make up for lost time and start now? |

"body": "In today's media landscape, it seems every channel out there has at least one “premium” show. \n\nIn fact, you’re beginning to wonder why you even pay for those streaming services anymore, you’re pretty sure you’ve seen everything worth watching on all of them and you never even use them these days. Maybe you could save the money you’re wasting on them every month and go out with your friends, or do something like join the gym. \n \nWell, before you make any rash decisions that involve going outside and doing things with so-called “other people”, I’m here to stage an intervention. \n\n10. Maron. \nDespite performing since the 80s, stand-up comedian Marc Maron never achieved any real recognition until his podcast, WTF with Marc Maron, took off in the early 2010s. \n\nMaron (the sitcom) is perhaps best described as more neurotic, misanthropic Louis, with each episode dealing with Marc’s attempts to be a decent person whilst continuing to struggle for recognition in spite of his recent successes. Thrown into this mix are Marc’s numerous demons, his anger problems and struggles with sobriety, all of which become increasingly relevant as the show goes on. If you’re a fan of Louis, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia or just low-key sitcoms in general, you owe it yourself to check out Maron.\n\n9. SPACED.\nSPACED is, from start to finish, a love letter to the media saturated lives of twenty somethings and every episode is packed with a pop culture references, parodies, and homages. \n\nWhile it only has 12 episodes, SPACED is necessary for any fan of Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg’s later work, or just fans of British comedy in general. Densely packed with jokes and references, which make repeat viewings incredibly rewarding, SPACED is a sadly underappreciated gem and well worth giving a few hours of your life to.\n\n8. Bosch. \nBased on the books by Michael Connolly, Bosch tells the story of Harry Bosch, a detective fighting both a dense underworld of crime and his personal shortcomings, set against a background of gritty Hollywood noir. While the show is slow moving, it’s completely engaging, holding your attention with its drip feed of information until the climax where everything comes to a head. \n\nWhat saves Bosch from being more than just an above average police procedural is Titus Welliver as the main character, a role he inhabits totally, giving Bosch a heavy world-weary demeanour, as if he knows his battle is ultimately a pointless one, which is something that becomes increasingly obvious as each season progresses. \n\nWhile it’s not for everyone, if you’re a fan of Terriers and similar crime dramas, Bosch may be your new favourite show. \n\n7. Banshee\nBanshee is the best character driven drama since Breaking Bad, with a complicated plot underpinned by realistic characters who find themselves in increasingly desperate situations. \n\nThe story begins with an unnamed charismatic criminal, recently released from prison for diamond theft, assuming the identity of Banshee, PA’s recently murdered sheriff, Lucas Hood. \n\nBanshee is a phenomenal series, with a great visual style, tense dynamic plotting, and great characters. In a world where every crime show is the “best thing since Breaking Bad”, Banshee is one of the few that managed to live up to that effusive praise. \n\n6. Togetherness. \nWith the recent debut of Room 104, it’s worth checking out the Duplass Brothers’ underappreciated Togetherness. Togetherness has the feel of a good indie film, helped by its use of loose plotting with strong characterisation to build a funny but tension filled atmosphere as the influence of Alex and Tina strains the household and exposes the deep painful flaws in Brett and Michelle’s stale marriage with each passing episode.\n\nYour enjoyment of Togetherness will hinge upon your stomach for “mumblecore” and similar low key indie films, but if you’re a fan of any of the Duplass Brothers other work, or enjoyed Joe Swanberg’s Easy then you should feel right at home here. \n\n5. Bored to Death\n\nEveryone has that show they wished could have one more season. Maybe even just one more episode. A show they loved so much they wished it didn’t have to end at all. For me, that show is Bored to Death, an off-kilter detective show that’s so much more than that. \n\nAfter making an impulsive decision to post an ad posing as a private detective on Craigslist, Johnathon Ames (Jason Schwartzman) is plunged into an increasingly complex series of cases, which he then struggles to juggle with his out-of-control ego, his real job, his relationship troubles and both his drinking and drug habits. If you’ve never seen it, you need to rectify that right now and see exactly why it inspires such devotion among its fans.\n\n4.The League\n\nFirst things first, your enjoyment of The League will depend heavily on your enjoyment of improvised humour. If you think it’s annoying and rarely builds to a satisfying punchline, then you should give this one a miss and move onto number three. \n\nFor the rest of you, let me introduce The League, an ensemble comedy about five friends who take fantasy football a little bit too seriously. \n\n3. The Path. \n\nAfter a short, but nevertheless notable absence, Aaron Paul makes his triumphant return to the small screen with The Path, a dark drama about loss of faith in a religious cult. \n\nPaul plays Eddie Lane, a devout Meyerist, who experiences a crisis of faith after an epiphany during a retreat that was meant to deepen his faith and move him up the ladder. | body | Hello, where did Jesus claim to be the "son" of God? Is it because he was born without a father? But, then Adam would have more right to be the "son" of God because he had not father and no mother. This is only logical. Furthermore, in the Bible God states that "Israel is my son, even my first born", Ex.4:22. So, where is Jesus? Is this not a misunderstanding of the position of Jesus? Yet, in Genesis 6:2-4, God talks about the "sons of God". I think "son" of God, in the context of that time, means a righteous person, a Godly person because there are other statements in the Bible where "son" of God is also mentioned. However, I do believe in Jesus, son of Mary, revere him and love him with ALL my heart. Also, I do believe that he was a REAL person, mighty, powerful and a righteous man of God. |

| body | Horus/Jesus isn't that close? Half the things in that image are totally made up. Gerald Massey has a lot to answer for. Off the top of my head: * Horus wasn't conceived of a virgin (his mother hovered over Osiris golden phallus to conceive him but it's not referred to as virgin conception *anywhere*) * There are no three wise men in the story of Horus * Christ wasn't born on December 25th, it was moved to coincide with the winter festival. Originally it was celebrated in July. Christianity doesn't claim that's Christ's birthday, it claims to celebrate it then. Nowhere in the bible does it state "December 25th" * For that matter, neither was Horus. Horus' birth was during the *Epagomenal Days* which was a four day festival (of fertility, I believe) in the Egyptian calendar and it falls between August 24th and 28th. So I don't even know where they got that from * His birth was not heralded by a star * He was *not* taught in a temple as a child * There is *no such person* as Anup the Baptizer. Best I can figure it's another name for Anubis but that also doesn't make any sense. * Horus had four disciples. Later on he has 16 followers, and later still an unknown number join Horus for Mesnui (which was a large battle the details of which I cannot remember). * Horus performed miracles, but he didn't walk on the water. All Gods perform miracles to demonstrate their divinity whilst they're among men. He also didn't raise anyone called El-Azur-Us from the dead. * Not one of those names is accurate. Horus *was* called Avenger of his father, master of heaven, "great god" or "the great god" and a few others. The ones listed on your image are completely made up. * Horus wasn't crucified (he was bit my a serpent sent by Set) but even if he was it doesn't mean he died on a cross. I found a good quote googling *Crucifixion is the act of nailing, binding or impaling a living victim or sometimes a dead person to a cross, stake or a tree, whether for executing the body or for exposing the corpse.* Thousands of people were "crucified" but very few were done on a cross - a growing number are now arguing that not even Jesus was. It tended to be people nailed to big wooden X's from what we can tell. Ok so every single point in your image was wrong, I didn't realize when I started. Mithras/Jesus is a better comparison. |

I'm not sure how much work has been done on it recently, but it's certainly a common enough theory. These people didn't go very far, so it wouldn't take much to engulf their whole world. |

| body | I'll get the book down and give you a "greatest hits" cut and put the ISBN - because there's a lot of obscure figures you probably won't know. As for what I mean by "not existing" is that basically it's because we have much less evidence for them, much further away from their life. What we have of Christ states that not long after his death, he had gained a following of people in the Roman Empire. There's emperors who we have just one passing mention of about 200 years later in a run down of other emperors but nothing else. Yet no one questions these emperors, just Christ - because most people questioning Christ don't understand how ancient sources work. |

| body | OK, if you're discounting Christ, you have to discount about half the historical figures you can name. When it comes to ancient sourcing, mention of someone 30-40 years after their death is considered amazingly close. We have less than 0.00001% of the documents and records of the era, so sourcing of ancient figures is always difficult. There are entire kings, emperors and pharaohs we don't have record of until a century after their rule, yet no one says "oh they didn't exist" because the people who study that know how ancient sourcing works. There are battles that aren't recorded until nearly 200 years after they took place. Some *places* aren't mentioned *once* in any sources we can find, yet seem to have been major ports. The city of Chester in the UK was the biggest roman settlement during their occupation and it had an absolutely huge building at it's center that we honestly are baffled by. Evidence has been found of hugely lavish homes and the river in the city seems to have been the biggest port in the UK. The thing is, no one outside of history buffs knows about Chester and it's position in the Roman Empire and it's very very rarely talked about. Why? Because we have *one* mention of it in all the sources of the era, and it's thought that mention may actually be referring to **Man**chester not Chester. By the logic of "Christ didn't exist", nor did Chester. Christ existed - really that's consider a fact among 99.9% of historians and scholars. That 0.01% is very interesting, but even they acknowledge that their argument has flaws. The idea of Christ not existing is born of ignorance of how historical scholarship works - and you're accusing this poster of ignorance towards science. I don't mean this offensively, I'm just telling you that you're accusing this poster of something you're inadvertently demonstrating yourself. |

| body | having records of Christ 30-40 years after his death is actually really really good for ancient sourcing. I'm fine with you saying he never existed, but I have a list of about 200 historical figures who you also have to say never existed by this logic. The "Christ was a myth" argument is kind of ill-informed, you will find very very few - secular and religious - biblical history scholars who support it. Those who do are often kind of fringe figures. I mean this as no insult to you, but Christ existing is pretty much solid. It's his divinity that's in question (and that question is a lot more interesting) |

| body | <p><em>I wasn't sure what to write, but someone suggested I write a personal story, and this immediately came to mind. </em></p> <p><img src="//i.imgur.com/jF2m91W.jpg" /> </p> <p>(Ashleigh Robinson and Gordon Harding)</p> <p> “you know Gordon Harding, right?” a friend of mine asked as I was getting onto my bike to leave</p> <p> “G? yeah, I know him” referring to an ironic nickname Gordon had picked up “why?” </p> <p>“I think I heard his name of the radio when I went into my Dad” he said, vaguely pointing behind him “I think he’s had an accident of some kind, I wasn’t really listening, I only heard the name” he tilted his head to one side “Sorry” </p> <p>“oh” I said “I hope he’s alright” </p> <p>“yeah, sorry” he said, and with that I said goodbye to him, got on my bike and rode home, thinking hard all the way. </p> <p>It had been a few years since I last saw Gordon with any regularity but I saw him around frequently enough and he always stopped to talk. I’d heard that he was having or perhaps even had a baby with his girlfriend Ashleigh and I wondered if the baby and Ashleigh were OK. Even though I’d never particularly liked Ashleigh much, I knew Gordon thought the world of her and so I’d always been pleasant to her. For reasons I could never quite get clear, Gordon didn’t just get into relationships with women; he took these women and made them the focal point of his own religion, worshiping them and granting their every need. I always found it a little bit unnerving but in all honesty I liked the guy and I knew that my own relationships were far from perfect and often very much in the co-dependent mould. Who was I to judge him? I pulled my bike into the shed, locked it behind me and then pulled out my phone to search his name as I walked into the house. The last time I saw Gordon, he was sitting beneath the stairs in the college we both attended. As usual I made him laugh with a couple of sarcastic comments about what I was doing and then cracked him up by taking pratfalls, pretending to get hit by a door that I couldn’t budge but everyone else was opening easily. Ashleigh smiled politely but instructed Gordon they had to go to get rid of me when she thought I couldn’t hear her. I remember the false smile she put on as they left, and I told Gordon I’d see him around. He was still laughing slightly, an oddly high pitched sound for someone as well built as him but I’d always thought it truly suited him. I watched them leave down the corridor. The slightly shy, high pitched laugh that tipped back and forth between sniggering and giggling while he hid his red face, was how I always remembered him. I’d sat by him for a year in registration and often sat next to him in other classes we shared yet the laughter was the first thing that came to mind, before I thought about his BB Gun/Airsoft Gun collection, his long army jacket, his insistence on reading the comics I drew in class before anyone else… I could only recall one time where he’d ever lost his temper, and even then that had been my fault for pushing him (adding “said Gordon, angrily” to the end of everything he said) and I’d basically done it on purpose. </p> <p><br /></p> <p>Walking into the house I was staring at my phone, scrolling through the local news trying to find out what had happened to him. I couldn’t see anything about a car accident or a works accident, the two most likely scenarios in my mind. Undeterred I searched his name specifically, left my phone on the side to load the page and went into the kitchen and poured myself a drink and washed my hands and face, as I always did when I came in out of habit. When I came back to my phone, I dropped it in shock. Gordon Harding, far from being a victim of an accident, had been arrested for the murder of his girlfriend Ashleigh Robinson</p> <p>’s Father. I suddenly felt sick and bending down to pick up my phone, I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to stand back up without throwing up. On top of that, I was suddenly far too hot and slightly dizzy, I walked over and sat on the stairs, running my hands through my hair. I felt as though everything had been turned slightly on its side, and that everything was slowly going to tip towards the wall. Could Gordon be a murderer? I mean he’d done some weird things – a few years before he met Ashleigh he asked out a mutual friend and she politely turned him down. Next time she saw him, he rolled up his sleeves and showed her some fresh scars that were cross crossing his wrists and added pointedly “you made me do that”. That didn’t make him a murderer though. It maybe meant he had some issues, but it didn’t make him a murderer. He had collected replica airsoft weaponry but again – that didn’t make him a murderer. The more I thought, the more “warning signs” I found to pull out and highlight in my memory, the more I dismissed them as actually meaningless. When he’d lost his temper with me, he’d picked me up off the ground and told me to stop but he hadn’t actually hurt me. I remembered him standing up to some sport-star high school douchebags who were messing with me, telling them calmly to stop “now” and watching them back down from his rugby player physique. Ultimately, I decided there were no warning signs; yet, I couldn't help think that there was something that I had picked up on within him, something unspoken in Gordon that I just couldn't quite articulate. I sat on the stairs for about an hour, head in my hands, watching as the day became sunset, and eventually evening and night. We weren’t the best of friends, but I’d always liked him. Always had time for him. I felt sick for a long time after that, sitting in the dark. </p> <p>At the subsequent trial it came out that the murder had bubbled up from an argument about money, with Ashleigh accusing her father of selling some jewellery she felt was hers and using the proceeds to gamble. Gordon and Ashleigh were living with him at the time, and Ashleigh had masterminded the plan. Gordon had stabbed Ashleigh’s father fifteen times, with two knives, attacking the man while he slept in order to get access to a safe that contained just £900. The judge and jury rejected Gordon’s claims of self-defense and sentenced him to life, with a minimum of 22 years to be served. Ashleigh received the same for masterminding the attack while two others, Ashleigh’s younger sister and her boyfriend, received life with a minimum of 18 years. The prosecution successfully argued that while Gordon had committed the actual murder, the others should be prosecuted for their “joint enterprise” in the attack and a subsequent appeal to lower the sentence was rejected by the lord chief justice. A few days after the trial, I saw Ashleigh’s older sisters on a TV show, talking about their father’s murder. They read a text Ashleigh had sent to her mother the night of the murder (“Things happened, he is no more. Sorry mum. xxxx.”) and behaved and spoke throughout as if Ashleigh had wielded the knife, clearly seeing her as the aggressor behind the tragic events. They recounted how their father had been murdered over four pieces of cheap jewellery and mentioned Gordon only once. </p> <p>In spite of everything, their viewpoint didn’t make me feel any better about things. I didn’t think it was that easy. Gordon may have been co-dependent and lonely, but that doesn’t make you a murderer. I didn’t think it was as easy as “Ashleigh told him to do it”. That simplistic analysis didn’t sit well with me. When I asked myself honestly, if I could imagine Gordon suggesting murder as the possible solution to a problem, the honest answer was “yes”. Maybe Ashleigh pressured him but my uneasy stomach couldn’t swallow the idea that Gordon was simply manipulated into this situation. Maybe that’s why I felt so sick about this – I had to face the realization that I had always known on some level that he was capable of something so terrible, yet never quite allowed myself to process those thoughts until it happened. Maybe I felt sick because it wasn’t as much of a shock as it should have been. That last thought echoed around my head for weeks after. </p> <p>Even now, a few years later, I find myself wondering if I really knew he was capable of this or if I just amended my memories after he was charged with the murder. I'm not sure I'll ever know. I do know, however, that in spite of everything I still miss the guy who used to laugh at my pratfalls, even though his girlfriend disapproved. I still like that guy, and I'm honestly not sure what that says about me. </p> <p><br /></p> <p><em>This site has got me writing after literally years of avoiding it due to depression and lack of confidence. I'm honestly grateful just for that, and hopefully I'll start improving with regular practice. </em></p> |

(Photo: Steve Granitz, 1996) </p> <p> Dweezil Zappa is not a rich man. People think he might be, because they sort of know who he is, but in reality he’s not. His wife works as an air hostess in order for the family to keep their health insurance and make ends meet. The popular, Grammy award winning, “Zappa plays Zappa” tours he’s been playing since 2007 haven’t made him much money, despite filling venues across the world. This seems hard to believe until you learn the facts; Late family matriarch Gail Zappa not only charged Dweezil for the rights to use the “Zappa plays Zappa” name (the amount has never been specified beyond “an exorbitant fee”), but also took 100% of the merchandise money (on the proviso that part of the fee would be refunded and 40% of the merch money would eventually go to Dweezil – according to him, this never happened).</p> <p><br /></p> <p> Gail Zappa was already a controversial figure long before this feud erupted in the wake of her death. Rumors long existed amongst Zappa fans that Frank Zappa’s wish was that Gail “sell the master tapes and get out of the music business” but for whatever reason Gail resisted these wishes and went in the opposite direction, controlling Frank’s estate with an iron fist and proclaiming that any performer wishing to perform a set consisting of mostly or all Frank’s music would have to pay the Zappa Family Trust (ZFT) for “grand rights”, a music license that usually only applies to theatrical performance. Long-time Zappa fans point out that this seems to go against Zappa’s repeated claims that his greatest thrill was to hear his music performed by others, and seems to directly contradict a statement released on Frank Zappa’s record label’s hotline shortly after his death in 1993. The statement, read by Frank’s elder Daughter Moon Unit Zappa, says in part “Just play his music if you're a musician. And otherwise, play his music anyway. That will be enough for him” and several musicians who spoke to him in his last days have claimed Frank made similar statements to them before he passed. Gail Zappa denies that the phone message was intended as any kind of statement from Frank and denies that her demanding a license is in violation of Frank’s wishes "Somebody goes out there, plays music — it's not played very well; it doesn't sound anything like what the composer intended, and they are telling the audience that's never heard it before that this is Frank Zappa's music. It's not. It's some wretched version of it." Gail said, in an attempt to justify her litigious behavior towards Frank Zappa tribute performances. Despite the repeated attempts to force cover bands to pay this license, it seems that very few actually did after consulting with lawyers. While he never paid the licence fee (although he said he would have if asked) Dweezil still paid up to his mother without complaining or pursuing legal action for moneys owed. His loyalty to her would not be rewarded.</p> <p> Gail Zappa died in October 2015, apparently of lung cancer. A few months before, she had appointed her and Frank’s youngest son Ahmet the new executor of ZFT, with help from their youngest daughter Diva. The news was initially met with excitement from Frank’s fans, as Ahmet rolled out a new and extensive release schedule, showcasing rare and officially unreleased material, alongside a partnership with universal music. Not long after Gail Zappa’s death, news of a new “official” documentary emerged, with unprecedented access to ZFT’s extensive archive, directed by Alex Winter (Bill, of Bill and Ted fame). Everything seemed to be going well, until Dweezil announced intentions for a new Zappa plays Zappa tour. ZFT informed Dweezil that he would not be able to use the Zappa Plays Zappa name that he had coined but was owned by ZFT, and that should he play any of Frank’s music he’d be liable for a fine of $150,000 per song. Ahmet, in an open letter, states that all he asked is that Dweezil pay a $1 license each year. Dweezil responded by pointing out he had to pay a $1 license and 100% of the merch to ZFT, a deal he was not willing to take (even if, with Gail’s lack of repayment, he’d effectively been doing that all along). The succession of back and forth letters revealed a real split between the once close Zappa siblings; Gail’s will divided the trust 30% each to Ahmet and Diva and 20% each to Moon and Dweezil. Not the equal share they’d always been promised. While they’d agreed to Ahmet temporarily running ZFT, it was assumed that going forward the trust would be run equally. Not so anymore. “It’s comical, the level of betrayal. That’s all I can say.” Says Moon on the dividing of the estate, before pointing to a “prudent person clause” that allows Ahmet to change the terms of the trust however he pleases “I don’t care how many times Ahmet says it. He has a 100% ability to make any and all changes to the trust. So I have to laugh every time he says, ‘My hands are tied.’” Neither Moon nor Dweezil were consulted on or are happy about the Alex Winter documentary or the decision to sell Frank and Gail’s house. Originally Dweezil planned to tour under the name “Dweezil Zappa plays Frank Zappa” only to learn that he can’t use his own name in conjunction with his fathers at all. The tour is now called “Dweezil Zappa plays Whatever The **** He Wants: the Cease and Desist Tour”, although he’s worried the negative publicity and name change will affect ticket sales, he’s happy that he, for the first time, will get 100% of his own merch money. Even if said merch cannot contain any images of Frank Zappa, because it’s owned by the trust. As to long promised guitars, unfinished music and other things promised to Dweezil by his mother and father, who knows what will happen. What is sure though is that like his mother before him, in his quest to protect the so-called “Legacy” of Frank Zappa, Ahmet Zappa is doing more to destroy it than anyone. </p> <p>Sources: </p> <p>http://www.wtfpod.com/podcast/episode-718-deon-cole-dweezil-zappa</p> <p>http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/frank-zappas-family-plans-massive-new-release-schedule-20150729</p> <p>http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/frank-zappas-widow-gail-zappa-dead-at-70-20151007</p> <p>http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/zappa-family-trust-threatens-dweezil-zappa-over-band-name-20160429</p> <p>https://www.courtlistener.com/opinion/2113350/zappa-v-rykodisc-inc/</p> <p>http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=102907874</p> <p>http://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/30/business/media/whats-in-a-name-just-ask-frank-zappas-feuding-heirs.html</p> <p>http://www.latimes.com/projects/la-ca-ms-frank-zappa-legacy/</p> <p>https://www.facebook.com/notes/ahmet-zappa/an-open-letter-to-my-brother/10153667213097309?pnref=story</p> <p>https://www.facebook.com/notes/ahmet-zappa/an-open-letter-to-my-brother/10153667213097309?pnref=story</p> <p><br /></p> <p><br /></p> <p><br /></p> |
