      "body": "Last night Michelle and I got into a bit of a tiff and some criticism was handed out.  I must admit, at the time I felt rather offended. Even a bit bruised ...\n\n![Angry Cat.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmYc3pSvjpp3qB6ogfeRv38BUK2uUtRBucqqxywWEguWTs/Angry%20Cat.png)\n\nIt took some soul searching and self-reflection, but I realized that I deserved it! \n\nI don’t think any of us like to be criticized.  Criticism can leave you feeling hurt and sometimes even a bit worthless.\n\nUnfortunately we can never get away from being criticized  at some point.  \n\nWhich is a good thing!\n\nAs long as people are doing that, it means you are living life.  The time to start worrying is when you don’t do anything, just to avoid getting hurt.\n\nSometimes we deserve the criticism we get and can learn from it.  The secret is to be able to distinguish between criticism that has merit and criticism that is just meant to upset. \n\nWhen you realize you can’t be right all the time, it gets a easier to listen with an open mind when someone criticizes you. That could also be the beginning of becoming more emotionally intelligent!\n\nOur first instinct is usually to defend ourselves and the action that caused the criticism.  We might even return the favor and give some criticism back. \n\nSO how can we handle the situation with grace?\n\nDon’t get angry or go into defensive mode. \n\n\n## Step back for a moment and think before you respond. ## \n\nIf you really feel you don’t deserve it, tell the person calmly why you feel like that.\n\nIf you can’t be calm and rational, rather walk away.  Getting into a shouting match will only create bad feelings. Both of you might even say things you don’t mean and create more trouble\n\n## Try to see it from the other person’s point of view\n\nIt’s not easy to think that someone else doesn’t see you as the wonderful person you are.  So you have to decide.  Is this someone you would normally trust and listen to?  Someone whose opinion matters to you? Or someone who is a serial criticizer?  Then decide whether it’s worth getting upset about.\n\n## Learn and improve\nIt might take a while to accept, but you can treat it as a learning experience. I don’t think anything else created such closeness as those times.\n\n\nThere’s a 10 year gap between my son (Jacques) and daughter ( Michelle), so I had special story times to spend with each.  Although Pinocchio was a particular favorite, Jacques enjoyed just about any story. That meant I could read a different one every night.\n\nMichelle on the other hand, would sometimes fall in love with the characters and insist on the same story every night. It usually lasted only a few nights but I remember the time when it was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.  Night after night she would refuse to listen to anything else and this lasted and lasted.  I can’t remember how long exactly, but I know by the time we moved on to a new story I was ready to feed Snow White a poison apple!\n\nThinking of those story times bring back so many wonderful memories and I’m extremely grateful that I could do it.  \n\nBoth kids turned into prolific readers and Michelle is an accomplished writer.  I would like to think that our bedtime story times contributed to this.\n\n**How Did International Read To Me Day Start?**\n\nAfter it was discovered that adult literacy is a worldwide problem, The Child Writes Foundation did some research.  They found that children who grew up being read to, developed a love of reading. It improves vocabulary, helps develop cognitive function and promotes creativity. You will not only be building a closer bond than you can ever imagine, you’ll also give them a major brain boost!  It will also leave you (and them) with fond memories.\n\nI know the main focus is to encourage children to become readers, but it doesn’t have to stop there.  There are many elderly people whose eyes are failing and who can’t read anymore.  \n\nCelebrate International Read To Me Day by reading to your children or anyone else for that matter. Some people call them myths, but I’ll rather go with opinions.\n\n\n## Opinion 1:  It is easier to write in seclusion and silence \n\nIf you find it difficult to concentrate with other people and noise around you, you most probably agree. \n\nOn the other hand, maybe you get so immersed in your work that your surroundings don’t bother you.\n\nApparently Stephen King listens to rock (quite loud) while he writes.  \n\nErnst Hemmingway spent many productive hours writing in bars.\n\nI don’t like writing in total silence. When there is no sound in my immediate vicinity, I find myself getting distracted by far off noises.  That's why I enjoy having a little background music while writing.\n\nI've decided to do what works for me and not worry about how you are ‘supposed’ to do it.\n\n## Opinion 2: You Can’t Write If You’re Not Inspired Or “In The Mood”\n\nNow let’s face it.  If every writer had to wait for inspiration or be “in the mood” to write, we would have very few books around. \n\nThe days when you wake up full of inspiration, with words just waiting to pour out of you, are great and can without doubt spur you on. Unfortunately, for most of us, they don’t come around all that often.\n\nSo what do you do?  \n\nYou get your butt on the chair and you write!\n\nYou will never become a prolific writer until you are willing to write every day.  Even when it’s the last thing you feel like doing.\n\nIf getting published is something you really, really desire you have to persevere.  Forget about inspiration and “being in the mood”.   \n\nThat's why we have to sit down and write every single day.  Even if we have to force ourelves. \n\n**NO.
