| title | BitConnect: Company Status Still Active in UK |
| body |

Rumors of closing BitConnect in the UK refer to an older filing and a demand to provide proof that the company is still active.

While we previously reported that BitConnect may have come under scrutiny from the UK authorities, the oversight so far has been related to the company's activity and status.A more up-to-date filing of BitConnect is under the title of BITCONNECT INTERNATIONAL PLC. As such, the company is up to date on its filings, listing directors and related persons. The shutdown notice was for a company named BITCONNECT LTD.

At the same time, the cryptocurrency community is becoming more aware of the threat of BitConnect and its pyramid-like structure. And while so far there are no official reports, awareness of the faults of BitConnect in reaping Bitcoin in exchange for BCC tokens is spreading wider. It seems like the regulators' notes was related to an older company and had nothing to do with hypothetically running a Ponzi scheme. Rather, the mechanisms of doing business in the UK require regular proof that the company is active.

BitConnect is the biggest and most prominent scheme for fast returns related to Bitcoin. But similar schemes are coming up, such as ETHConnect and even NeoConnect, having a similar business model:

The BitConnect market price has been rising as well in unison with Bitcoin, as the leading coin headed above $7,500 once again. Thus, BitConnect assures it gets a steady inflow of Bitcoins. And as soon as Bitcoin is strong, BitConnect would be able to supply the investors with the promised daily payout. Given that BitConnect has been running since Bitcoin was at a much lower price, the reserves would help it run much longer than a typical pyramid scheme.

BitConnect still gathers funds in Bitcoin and pays them out in cash.

For more information and to sign up for Bitconnect click here.

|

| title | Ethconnect Ico, Like Bitconnect? Let’s all make millions! |
| body |

The Eth connect platform is having their ico starting November 1st and ending November 30th. This program is just like bitconnect or more recently we saw regal coin go to $90 dollars. These platforms all offer lending, staking and mining. Personally we will put $40,000 into this program. Ethconnect is scheduled to sell 8 million tokens. The starting market cap will be 8 million dollars, but since people will probably sell at $20 dollars at first, the market cap will go to 120 million dollars just to start out. This coin will probably start out at 20 dollars each after the ico. And that’s just the beginning. At any one time there is over 700 people on their web site, it tells you how many people are on their website. They are using a program some code on their site to show you how many people are on their website. Much like we do. I believe with the $40,000 I invested if I can actually buy that many eth tokens I will be able to make over one million dollars. Maybe even three million dollars. However with Hextra coin I couldnt buy that many tokens because when the token sale alert went off and you tried to buy tokens the site would get jammed up and stop working. Almost like a DDOS attack and even with their cloudflare protection it would show an offline site.

After users buy Ethconnect for $0.50cents to $1.00 during the Ethconnect initial coin offering starting November 1st, it will go on the market at the price these users set it at on the first exchange it will be on. This is probably going to be set at $20 right from the start and will soon grow to $25 and $40 just like regal coin did. Who expected a jump with regal coin to $90? Just a few months ago I was thinking they have a lot to prove if they want to be trusted and now look at them. And Ethconnect has an even better looking platform and is getting hit with hundreds of thousands of hits. Whether people like it or not ethconnect will be a platform to beat. Even if I do not get in at $1 during the ICO I will definitely buy at least $40,000 at $20. I will wait a few months or even a year for this to go past $150 just to get a few million dollars out of this.

Ethconnect is like bitconnect in the sense that it is a lending platform, some say an elaborate ponzi scheme they a lot of people may not be happy with. The kind of people that are not happy with this type of platform are the people interested in blockchain technology the programmers behind different projects and those wanting cryptocurrency to keep a good name for itself. There are many programs like bitconnect such as western coin, hextra coin, ethconnect and I am probably missing a few. They have all done well because people like the ease of use, the ease of lending and staking.

Lending with ethconnect means that you can gain a guaranteed daily profit rate of something like 0.35% per day up to 1.30% per day. It tells you exactly how much you can make per day the day before. It locks in the rate.

Staking is another form of cryptocurrency mining. It is called POS for short. You get dividends for holding your ethconnect coins in a desktop wallet that is on twenty four hours a day. So you will notice that sudo famous youtubers like craig grant do commercials and show their exodus wallets filled with bitcoin. They got that bitcoin by selling their dividends of bitconnect coin that they got from staking bitconnect. It’s very simple. There are tons of ways to make money with this type of platform and there are now a few players in the game. While we saw a drop on bitconnect because the price of regal coin was going up, this is to be expected. When new coins go on the market with the exact same strategy the biggest will lose some steam. I believe bitconnect has been manipulating their own market for awhile, it constantly goes up making money for traders who do not use their lending service. I believe they skim off the top to take profits for their self when they dump their portion of bitconnect coin. So it even makes money when trading.

Ethconnect will work the same way, it just depends how much they might skim off the top. I believe there is no premine to this. So the company will have to make their coin just like we do by purchasing it with bitcoin. ICO’s a lot of the time work just like in the movie wolf of wall street except it’s no longer back room deals for pre sales the companies can do it right out in the open and no one would ever know the difference in this mostly unregulated territory.

In the last few weeks this journalist bought 7BTC worth of bitconnect at $212 and sold at $223 for a profit of 3 BTC. It will work the same way with Ethconnect you’ll be able to trade it and capitalize on every part of the service.

This just goes to show the demand is high. At any one time, there are over 500 people signing up on the site for the Ethconnect. Ethconnect is made by a company from Japan.

For more information and to sign up for Ethconnect click here.

|

| title | Hackers Stole Over $150,000 From Zcash, Ethereum, and Bitcoin Wallets |
| body |

An anonymous group of hackers has begun to target Bitcoin, ZCash, Ethereum, and Monero wallets with malware known as CryptoShuffler, successfully stealing $150,000 from user wallets within the past few months.

CryptoShuffler is a type of malware which infects computers and mobile phones through phishing attacks in the form of emails, attachments, and messages. Once CryptoShuffler penetrates a system, it idly operates behind the scenes, waiting to detect a cryptocurrency wallet address on the clipboard. Once the user copies and pastes a cryptocurrency wallet address, for instance a bitcoin address, the CryptoShuffler malware automatically alters the bitcoin address on the clipboard to the wallet address of CryptoShuffler.

For the victims, it is difficult to spot the sudden alteration in the address because the CryptoShuffler malware has tens of thousands of addresses in its system. Using its algorithm, it chooses the address from its pool that is the most similar to the victim’s address, and replaces the victim’s address with one of its addresses, rerouting the funds to the hacking group’s cryptocurrency wallets.

It is also challenging to detect and remove the CryptoShuffler malware or any type of cryptocurrency-targeting malware of its kind because they operate idly within the operating system. In most cases, even a full format or factory reset will not remove the malware. A clean wipe out of the hard drives is necessary.

While it is hard to spot and eliminate the malware once it penetrates an operating system, it is not difficult to prevent any type of cryptocurrency wallet-targeting malware of entering the system. Usually, these types of malware can only be installed into devices through external phishing attacks and downloads of attachments, files, and images. Hence, in addition to enabling antivirus software, it is important to verify the files that are downloaded to the device to ensure that they do not contain any malware.

Also, another way of preventing the reallocation of funds from occurring is to double check the cryptocurrency wallet address that is inputted. Because CryptoShuffler automatically changes the address once it hits the clipboard, a safe approach is to confirm the address that was copied and pasted and whether it matches the address of the recipient.

An Ethereum user with the online alias “Apneal” once was a victim to the CryptoShuffler malware. When Apneal sent a couple of small transactions in Ether from MyEtherWallet, Apneal noticed that the transactions did not arrive in the recipients wallet after many hours. Apneal later discovered that the clipboard automatically changed the address once copied and pasted, rerouting the Ether transactions.

|

| title | 4 novels Bill Gates recommend reading |
| body |

Bill Gates, the former CEO of Microsoft, has said he breezes through about 50 books a year — or about a book a week.

Most of the books are nonfiction. But Gates recommends the few fictional books with as much enthusiasm as the history or science books he loves so much. Here are the novels he thinks everyone should read.

"Seveneves" by Neal Stephenson

After a science-fiction dry spell of more than a decade, Gates picked up "Seveneves" on a friend's recommendation, and he says he's grateful for it. "The plot gets going in the first sentence, when the moon blows up," he wrote on his blog. But that's only the beginning. The world soon learns the entire species is doomed: In two years' time, a cataclysmic meteor shower will destroy all life on the pale blue dot. It's up to humanity to send as many spacecraft into orbit as possible with the hope of escaping the apocalypse."You might lose patience with all the information you'll get about space flight," Gates writes, "but I loved the technical details."

'The Heart' by Maylis de Kerangal

Though it may be a novel, "The Heart" is about as close to creative nonfiction as fiction gets, Gates says. The story involves a man dying in an accident, after which his parents decide to donate his heart. "But the plot is secondary to the strength of its words and characters," Gates wrote on his blog. "The book uses beautiful language to connect you deeply with people who may be in the story for only a few minutes."The recommendation is courtesy of his wife Melinda, he says, and now he's passing it along to the public.

'The Rosie Project' by Graeme Simsion

A recommendation from Melinda, "The Rosie Project" offered Gates the chance to introspect a bit."Anyone who occasionally gets overly logical will identify with the hero, a genetics professor with Asperger’s Syndrome who goes looking for a wife," he wrote on his blog. "(Melinda thought I would appreciate the parts where he’s a little too obsessed with optimizing his schedule. She was right.)"Gates called the book "clever, funny, and moving," and even remarked that it was one of the most profound novels he's read in a long time.

'Patriot & Assassin' by Robert Cook

Another recommendation from a friend, "Patriot & Assassin" is about a terrorist plot to release nerve gas on US soil. It's up to the protagonist to assemble of squad of scientists and military operatives to foil the attack. In line with Gates' nonfiction recommendations, the book blends historical fiction with philosophy and politics. In a 2013 blog post, Gates wrote the last novel he read before "Patriot & Assassin" was "The Hunger Games," which he surmised probably had more archery.

What books do you recommend to Mr. Gates

Leave a comment below!!

|

But Gates recommends the few fictional books with as much enthusiasm as the history or science books he loves so much. Here are the novels he thinks everyone should read.
\n
\n
\"Seveneves\" by Neal Stephenson
\n
After a science-fiction dry spell of more than a decade, Gates picked up \"Seveneves\" on a friend's recommendation, and he says he's grateful for it. \"The plot gets going in the first sentence, when the moon blows up,\" he wrote on his blog. But that's only the beginning. The world soon learns the entire species is doomed: In two years' time, a cataclysmic meteor shower will destroy all life on the pale blue dot. It's up to humanity to send as many spacecraft into orbit as possible with the hope of escaping the apocalypse.\"You might lose patience with all the information you'll get about space flight,\" Gates writes, \"but I loved the technical details.\"
\n

\n
'The Heart' by Maylis de Kerangal
\n
Though it may be a novel, \"The Heart\" is about as close to creative nonfiction as fiction gets, Gates says. The story involves a man dying in an accident, after which his parents decide to donate his heart. \"But the plot is secondary to the strength of its words and characters,\" Gates wrote on his blog. \"The book uses beautiful language to connect you deeply with people who may be in the story for only a few minutes.\"The recommendation is courtesy of his wife Melinda, he says, and now he's passing it along to the public.
\n

\n
'The Rosie Project' by Graeme Simsion
\n
A recommendation from Melinda, \"The Rosie Project\" offered Gates the chance to introspect a bit.\"Anyone who occasionally gets overly logical will identify with the hero, a genetics professor with Asperger’s Syndrome who goes looking for a wife,\" he wrote on his blog. \"(Melinda thought I would appreciate the parts where he’s a little too obsessed with optimizing his schedule. She was right.)\"Gates called the book \"clever, funny, and moving,\" and even remarked that it was one of the most profound novels he's read in a long time.
\n

\n
'Patriot & Assassin' by Robert Cook
\n
Another recommendation from a friend, \"Patriot & Assassin\" is about a terrorist plot to release nerve gas on US soil. It's up to the protagonist to assemble of squad of scientists and military operatives to foil the attack. In line with Gates' nonfiction recommendations, the book blends historical fiction with philosophy and politics. In a 2013 blog post, Gates wrote the last novel he read before \"Patriot & Assassin\" was \"The Hunger Games,\" which he surmised probably had more archery.
\n

\n
What books do you recommend to Mr. Gates
\n
Leave a comment below!!
\n
",

| title | Japanese people live longer than the rest of us – so what's their secret? |
| body |

It’s the age old question (pun intended), and one that has given rise to an anti-ageing industry that is estimated to grow to $216.52 billion by 2021: how can we, mere mortals that we are, live longer?

According to recent studies, the answer could well lie in Japan. The Japanese top the global table for life expectancy: on average, they can expect to live for 83.7 years (the UK comes 20th, with an average of 81.2 years).

And this week, they hit another milestone, as it was revealed that the number of Japanese people aged 90 or over has hit the two million mark for the first time. So, what is it that they’re putting in the water in Japan? Have they found a mainstream supply to the fountain of youth?

So, what is it that they’re putting in the water in Japan? Have they found a mainstream supply to the fountain of youth?

More realistically, the Japanese seem to have their finger on the pulse when it comes to lifestyle. Their diet is lean and balanced, consisting mainly of fish, seafood, whole grains, vegetables and tofu. The processed Western foods that science is now linking to an array of health issues are largely absent from Japanese plates.

This healthy approach to eating reflects in the country’s rate of obesity, which is impressively low at just 3.5pc of the population (it looks even better when you compare it to the UK’s dismal 24.9pc). It hardly needs saying that obesity is now considered a killer, linked to everything from coronary heart disease to diabetes and cancer.

And, importantly, the Japanese start young. Schools in the country adhere to dietary guidelines that Jamie Oliver can only dream of, with lunch plans consisting of very little refined sugar. Naomi Moriyama, author of Secrets of the World's Healthiest Children: Why Japanese Children Have the Longest, Healthiest Lives — And How Yours Can Too told Today, “this way, believe me, children learn to like the healthy, delicious choices put in front of them.”

t’s not all about diet, however. The Japanese healthcare system is considered one of the world's best, combining advanced medical knowledge and equipment with an accessible public/private hybrid model that sees the government pay at least 70pc of the cost of procedures (more if you’re on a low income). For a developed country, it’s an eye-catchingly cheap arrangement: Japan’s healthcare system sucks up around 9.5pc of GDP (compare that to America’s 16.4pc), even though it has an aging population.

The government has also taken preventative measures to care for its citizens. A recent focus on suicide prevention as seen impressive results: in 2012 in was reported that the number of suicides in Japan fell below 30,000 for the first time since 1998. “Initially we thought that this was just temporary, a blip,” Dr Tadashi Takeshima, Director of Japan’s Centre for Suicide Prevention at the National Institute of Mental Health, told the WHO. “But in 2013 we saw a further decline in the numbers.”

Access to good healthcare and a tendency towards fish certainly help the Japanese live longer – but there are some studies that suggest their longevity may simply be down to having good genes. Two very specific genes, in fact.

The first is DNA 5178, which helps individuals resist adult-onset diseases, such as myocardial infarction, cerebrovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. The second, ND2-237Met genotype, may confer resistance to cardiovascular and cerebrovascular atherogenic diseases. Japanese people are more likely to have these genes, although, as ever with genes, it’s something of a lottery on an individual case. Some receive more ‘life extending’ genes than others.

Regardless, it’s fair to say the average Japanese person is likely to have been raised in an environment consistent with extended life. For example, in 2012 it was reported that the 98pc of Japanese children walk or cycle to school.

So, if you’re looking for a long and healthy life, hopping on a Boris bike might just get you that letter from the Queen.

|

| title | IBM Beats Microsoft in Blockchain Technology |
| body |

Blockchain technology is cropping up everywhere these days, from copy machines to the financial industry. However, a recent survey called the "Blockchain Enterprise Survey” indicates that IBM is most successful at deploying Blockchain technology solutions.

Undertaken by market research firm Juniper Research, the survey included four hundred top-level executives and concluded by ranking IBM before other industry giants like Microsoftand Accenture.

The survey also painted an encouraging picture for the future of Blockchain technology. Among those who responded, 67 percent said they had already invested more than $100,000 into the technology, and 91 percent said they would be spending at least that amount in 2017.

Increasing awareness, deployment

The report also indicated that awareness of Blockchain technology has risen dramatically over the past 12 months, suggesting a far greater adoption paradigm than had been previously thought. The survey said:

“It is clear that companies across the board have a significantly greater understanding of blockchain technology than was the case 12 months ago. This stems in part from a surge in R&D (research & development) both internally and in partnership with third parties, with a recognition that Blockchain has the potential to be deployed in a variety of use cases. As the number of research projects has increased so, too, has awareness, both amongst the participants and elsewhere in their industries, with competitor companies in turn beginning to consider whether they, too, should seek to gain competitive advantage from deployment.”

|

However, a recent survey called the \"Blockchain Enterprise Survey” indicates that IBM is most successful at deploying Blockchain technology solutions.
\n

\n
Undertaken by market research firm Juniper Research, the survey included four hundred top-level executives and concluded by ranking IBM before other industry giants like Microsoftand Accenture.
\n
The survey also painted an encouraging picture for the future of Blockchain technology. Among those who responded, 67 percent said they had already invested more than $100,000 into the technology, and 91 percent said they would be spending at least that amount in 2017.
\n
Increasing awareness, deployment
\n
The report also indicated that awareness of Blockchain technology has risen dramatically over the past 12 months, suggesting a far greater adoption paradigm than had been previously thought. The survey said:
\n
“It is clear that companies across the board have a significantly greater understanding of blockchain technology than was the case 12 months ago. This stems in part from a surge in R&D (research & development) both internally and in partnership with third parties, with a recognition that Blockchain has the potential to be deployed in a variety of use cases. As the number of research projects has increased so, too, has awareness, both amongst the participants and elsewhere in their industries, with competitor companies in turn beginning to consider whether they, too, should seek to gain competitive advantage from deployment.”
\n

\n
",

| title | WoowWhat's new with the Apple TV? |
| body |

Like the super-fancy iPhone X, you absolutely don't need the Apple TV 4K. But you might want one anyway. If you just paid big for a sweet new TV, it makes sense to feed it the best video you can. With streaming that means 4K resolution, preferably with high dynamic range (HDR) or Dolby Vision, which both deliver better color and more pop.Sure, that new TV has built-in apps that can stream Netflix, Amazon, Vudu and all the rest in 4K and HDR, but for the best streaming experience -- with the most apps, easiest search and constant updates -- you'll want to connect a separate box.

Before I get into the details of the new 4K version, here's what Apple has added to both it and the earlier 2015 version, which remains on sale.

There's an updated operating system, TVOS 11, that's available now on the 2015 model and shipping with all 2017 Apple TV 4Ks.

It lets the Apple TV discover and pair with AirPods for private listening, adds AirPlay 2support with multiroom audio (coming soon), and a setting to automatically engage Dark Room mode based on local time.

Now you can sync the home pages of multiple Apple TVs in your household, automatically mirroring their arrangements and folders. Downloading an app on one adds it to another.

In addition to the forthcoming Amazon app, Apple's TV app will add a section devoted to live sports. If your favorite team is playing, you can simply ask Siri to watch it and the box will automatically switch and stream (if available). A similar section will be added for news.

The HomePod speaker, due later this year, can play audio from Apple TV wirelessly, but Apple isn't detailing any other capabilities. I asked about using HomePod's far-field mics for remote-free Siri voice control, similar to the Echo Dot controlling Fire TV, but Apple had no comment.

Upside-down remote? Put a ring on it

I have always loved the touchpad-equipped Apple TV remote. Whipping around menus and videos with one thumb feels slick and futuristic. I dig the tidy size and button count as well as the quality feel of its materials from metal to glass to the matte touchpad itself.

For many others, the Apple TV remote is the Apple TV's least-loved feature. Ineed, unless I attach the lanyard or a remote case, I occasionally pick it up wrongside-up and start swiping the bottom glass, not the top pad. A clever, ultraminimalist design touch solves that issue admirably on the Apple TV 4K remote: There's a raised, white ring around the menu key. Now it's obvious at a glance which end is up. Apple is also adding this white ring to the original Apple TV remote. Bravo!

Back in black

The box itself looks exactly like its predecessor. The only visible difference between the two is the absence of a USB-C port on the back of the new one. Apple told me it was only used for service, and it's not needed anymore.

Under the hood there's an Apple's A10X Fusion processor -- the same used in the iPad Pro -- for faster processing and graphics than the A8 chip in the 2015 model. However, both boxes felt equally quick to me. Perhaps future games will take advantage of the new processor.

Updated connections include Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11ac Wi‑Fi with simultaneous 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands and Bluetooth 5.0. The video out is now HDMI 2.0a to support 4K HDR video. The Apple TV 4K can do Dolby Digital surround sound, but it's not compatible with Dolby Atmosaudio.

The 4K box is available in 32GB and 64GB configurations. Unless you download lots of big games, 32GB is plenty, since the box streams pretty much everything else (video, photos and so on) and the storage is used primarily for apps.

Not just for Apple fans anymore

Apple's devices offer more perks to people who use iPhones, iPads and Mac computers. But as Apple TV's app lineup has expanded, its appeal has grown to non-Apple (or at least non-iTunes) people too.

The impending addition of Amazon, the second most-popular streaming provider after Netflix and a direct competitor to iTunes, erases my No. 1 complaint about Apple TV. Like just about every other streamer on the market, Apple TV will finally be able to access Amazon's vast library of to-rent and to-purchase content and free Prime shows and movies, including Amazon originals. And the Apple TV 4K will get the 4K and HDR (and Dolby Vision) titles too.

Apple TV added Wal-Mart-owned Vudu, another major iTunes competitor, last month, but that app doesn't serve 4K or HDR/Dolby Vision on the Apple TV 4K (yet).

One advantage Roku still has over Apple TV is the ability to actually rent or purchase TV shows and movies directly on the device from multiple services, and even compare prices. With Apple TV, those purchases can only be made through iTunes. If you want to watch an Amazon or Vudu title via Apple TV, you'll have to buy it somewhere else first, like Amazon's website.

Once you make that purchase, however, Apple TV's Amazon and Vudu apps have full access to the title. But don't write off iTunes just yet. The service has a pair of aces up its sleeve that could sway even non-Apple people to use iTunes instead of its competitors for movie purchases and rentals.

4K is actually cheaper on iTunes (for now)

Ace No. 1: If you own a particular iTunes title already in HD, and it becomes available in 4K (with or without HDR) on iTunes, Apple will upgrade the version you already bought for free, automatically. As far as I know such a policy is unprecedented. From LaserDisc to VHS to DVD to Blu-ray to streaming, if you wanted a higher-quality version of the video, you had to buy it again, full price.

Ace No. 2: All HD and 4K titles on iTunes cost the same. On other services, 4K is typically more expensive. Take a new release like "Wonder Woman." On iTunes it costs $20 to buy and $6 to rent, regardless of whether you get the HD or 4K/Dolby Vision version. On Vudu and Google Play, the HD version costs the same but the 4K/HDR version costs $30 to buy and $10 to rent. It's a similar story with new-to-video movies "Kong: Skull Island," "Ghost in the Shell" and "Transformers: The Last Knight"

I'm not sure how long that big price difference can last, and Vudu, Google and FandangoNow had no comment when I asked if they're planning to lower their 4K prices to compete. On Tuesday Vudu matched iTunes' $20 price for the 4K version of "Baby Driver," however. Begun, the 4K movie price wars have.

One caveat: iTunes currently lacks the 4K versions of some movies, like "Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2" and "Fate of the Furious," which other services have in 4K and HDR. I asked Apple whether either title would be available on its service in 4K soon (triggering the free upgrade to 4K).

Company reps said they were working with studios to add more 4K titles, but that Disney, the studio behind "Guardians," is not one of the studios supporting 4K HDR for Apple TV 4K content. Translation: Don't expect it or other 4K Disney titles -- including Star Wars, Pixar and other Marvel movies -- to hit iTunes anytime soon.

Can't find 4K TV shows and movies? Ask Siri

4K streams have been available since 2014 but they've been notoriously difficult to find. Netflix does a good job of surfacing them in a row called "Ultra HD 4K" on many devices and TVs, but if you want to just see available titles across a bunch of services, it's not easy. The best solution, until Siri came along, was Roku's "4K spotlight" channel (which ironically excludes Netflix).

On the Apple TV 4K you can just press the remote's mic button and say, "Show me TV shows in 4K," or, "Show me movies in 4K." You can get more specific like, "Show me comic book movies in 4K," or, "Show me TV dramas in 4K." Each of these searches returned relevant results from Netflix and iTunes, the two 4K services currently active on my box. Meanwhile "...movies in HDR," worked but, "...TV shows in HDR," didn't and neither did, "...in Dolby Vision," or, "Show me TV dramas in 4K starring Bob Odenkirk." Sorry, Bob.

Is it worth the extra money?

Not for most people.Once Amazon launches, the main hold-up over Apple TV 4K is the price. If you really want to save money, most 4K TVs have perfectly good on-board apps. And if you want to use an external streamer instead, the Roku is much cheaper.

But let's say you're OK spending $179, £179 or AU$249 to get a high-performance streamer. If you're an "Apple person" with a nice TV and a yen for improved image quality, the Apple TV 4K is definitely worth getting -- and if you already own the non-4K one and you have cash to spare, it's a good excuse to kick that box to a secondary room. The same goes for movie buffs who regularly rent or buy new releases in 4K, thanks to iTunes' price advantage and promise to upgrade to the 4K versions.

For everyone else it's a tougher sell. Apple TV 4K still provides a more polished experience than the current Roku or Amazon 4K devices or the Nvidia Shield (which just dropped in price to $180 too), but that polish comes dear.

|

\n
Before I get into the details of the new 4K version, here's what Apple has added to both it and the earlier 2015 version, which remains on sale.
\n
\n
There's an updated operating system, TVOS 11, that's available now on the 2015 model and shipping with all 2017 Apple TV 4Ks.
\n
\n
It lets the Apple TV discover and pair with AirPods for private listening, adds AirPlay 2support with multiroom audio (coming soon), and a setting to automatically engage Dark Room mode based on local time.
\n
\n
Now you can sync the home pages of multiple Apple TVs in your household, automatically mirroring their arrangements and folders. Downloading an app on one adds it to another.
\n
\n
In addition to the forthcoming Amazon app, Apple's TV app will add a section devoted to live sports. If your favorite team is playing, you can simply ask Siri to watch it and the box will automatically switch and stream (if available). A similar section will be added for news.
\n
\n
The HomePod speaker, due later this year, can play audio from Apple TV wirelessly, but Apple isn't detailing any other capabilities. I asked about using HomePod's far-field mics for remote-free Siri voice control, similar to the Echo Dot controlling Fire TV, but Apple had no comment.
\n
\n

\n
Upside-down remote? Put a ring on it
\n
I have always loved the touchpad-equipped Apple TV remote. Whipping around menus and videos with one thumb feels slick and futuristic. I dig the tidy size and button count as well as the quality feel of its materials from metal to glass to the matte touchpad itself.
\n
For many others, the Apple TV remote is the Apple TV's least-loved feature. Ineed, unless I attach the lanyard or a remote case, I occasionally pick it up wrongside-up and start swiping the bottom glass, not the top pad. A clever, ultraminimalist design touch solves that issue admirably on the Apple TV 4K remote: There's a raised, white ring around the menu key. Now it's obvious at a glance which end is up. Apple is also adding this white ring to the original Apple TV remote. Bravo!
\n

\n
Back in black
\n
The box itself looks exactly like its predecessor. The only visible difference between the two is the absence of a USB-C port on the back of the new one. Apple told me it was only used for service, and it's not needed anymore.
\n
Under the hood there's an Apple's A10X Fusion processor -- the same used in the iPad Pro -- for faster processing and graphics than the A8 chip in the 2015 model. However, both boxes felt equally quick to me. Perhaps future games will take advantage of the new processor.
\n
Updated connections include Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11ac Wi‑Fi with simultaneous 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands and Bluetooth 5.0. The video out is now HDMI 2.0a to support 4K HDR video. The Apple TV 4K can do Dolby Digital surround sound, but it's not compatible with Dolby Atmosaudio.
\n
The 4K box is available in 32GB and 64GB configurations. Unless you download lots of big games, 32GB is plenty, since the box streams pretty much everything else (video, photos and so on) and the storage is used primarily for apps.
\n

\n

\n
Not just for Apple fans anymore
\n
Apple's devices offer more perks to people who use iPhones, iPads and Mac computers. But as Apple TV's app lineup has expanded, its appeal has grown to non-Apple (or at least non-iTunes) people too.
\n
The impending addition of Amazon, the second most-popular streaming provider after Netflix and a direct competitor to iTunes, erases my No. 1 complaint about Apple TV. Like just about every other streamer on the market, Apple TV will finally be able to access Amazon's vast library of to-rent and to-purchase content and free Prime shows and movies, including Amazon originals. And the Apple TV 4K will get the 4K and HDR (and Dolby Vision) titles too.
\n
Apple TV added Wal-Mart-owned Vudu, another major iTunes competitor, last month, but that app doesn't serve 4K or HDR/Dolby Vision on the Apple TV 4K (yet).
\n
One advantage Roku still has over Apple TV is the ability to actually rent or purchase TV shows and movies directly on the device from multiple services, and even compare prices. With Apple TV, those purchases can only be made through iTunes. If you want to watch an Amazon or Vudu title via Apple TV, you'll have to buy it somewhere else first, like Amazon's website.
\n
Once you make that purchase, however, Apple TV's Amazon and Vudu apps have full access to the title. But don't write off iTunes just yet. The service has a pair of aces up its sleeve that could sway even non-Apple people to use iTunes instead of its competitors for movie purchases and rentals.
\n

\n
4K is actually cheaper on iTunes (for now)
\n
\n
Ace No. 2: All HD and 4K titles on iTunes cost the same. On other services, 4K is typically more expensive. Take a new release like \"Wonder Woman.\" On iTunes it costs $20 to buy and $6 to rent, regardless of whether you get the HD or 4K/Dolby Vision version. On Vudu and Google Play, the HD version costs the same but the 4K/HDR version costs $30 to buy and $10 to rent. It's a similar story with new-to-video movies \"Kong: Skull Island,\" \"Ghost in the Shell\" and \"Transformers: The Last Knight\"
\n
I'm not sure how long that big price difference can last, and Vudu, Google and FandangoNow had no comment when I asked if they're planning to lower their 4K prices to compete. On Tuesday Vudu matched iTunes' $20 price for the 4K version of \"Baby Driver,\" however. Begun, the 4K movie price wars have.
\n
One caveat: iTunes currently lacks the 4K versions of some movies, like \"Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2\" and \"Fate of the Furious,\" which other services have in 4K and HDR. I asked Apple whether either title would be available on its service in 4K soon (triggering the free upgrade to 4K).
\n
Company reps said they were working with studios to add more 4K titles, but that Disney, the studio behind \"Guardians,\" is not one of the studios supporting 4K HDR for Apple TV 4K content. Translation: Don't expect it or other 4K Disney titles -- including Star Wars, Pixar and other Marvel movies -- to hit iTunes anytime soon.
\n
Can't find 4K TV shows and movies? Ask Siri
\n
4K streams have been available since 2014 but they've been notoriously difficult to find. Netflix does a good job of surfacing them in a row called \"Ultra HD 4K\" on many devices and TVs, but if you want to just see available titles across a bunch of services, it's not easy. The best solution, until Siri came along, was Roku's \"4K spotlight\" channel (which ironically excludes Netflix).
\n
On the Apple TV 4K you can just press the remote's mic button and say, \"Show me TV shows in 4K,\" or, \"Show me movies in 4K.\" You can get more specific like, \"Show me comic book movies in 4K,\" or, \"Show me TV dramas in 4K.\" Each of these searches returned relevant results from Netflix and iTunes, the two 4K services currently active on my box. Meanwhile \"...movies in HDR,\" worked but, \"...TV shows in HDR,\" didn't and neither did, \"...in Dolby Vision,\" or, \"Show me TV dramas in 4K starring Bob Odenkirk.\" Sorry, Bob.
\n
Is it worth the extra money?
\n
Not for most people.Once Amazon launches, the main hold-up over Apple TV 4K is the price. If you really want to save money, most 4K TVs have perfectly good on-board apps. And if you want to use an external streamer instead, the Roku is much cheaper.
\n
But let's say you're OK spending $179, £179 or AU$249 to get a high-performance streamer. If you're an \"Apple person\" with a nice TV and a yen for improved image quality, the Apple TV 4K is definitely worth getting -- and if you already own the non-4K one and you have cash to spare, it's a good excuse to kick that box to a secondary room. The same goes for movie buffs who regularly rent or buy new releases in 4K, thanks to iTunes' price advantage and promise to upgrade to the 4K versions.
\n
For everyone else it's a tougher sell. Apple TV 4K still provides a more polished experience than the current Roku or Amazon 4K devices or the Nvidia Shield (which just dropped in price to $180 too), but that polish comes dear.
\n

\n
",
