titleLesson I've Learned: Avoid over Investing & Avoid Stress!
body![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmVagTp8vzr5dm2CvctgodjeoJeShkZKeL5Q8YZRHYNLNt/image.png) I have only been actively invested in the crypto space since August 2017. This has, to put it mildly, been an extremely steep learning curve -- with many lessons learned! One of the lessons I have learned, is not to over invest in the cryptocurrency space. Initially I invested every spare penny that I could. The bull run at the end of 2017 added fuel to the flames. Things were great and my investments were growing exponentially. What could go wrong? And then January 2018 happened. I saw the value of my portfolio plummet. Stress set in! It was around this time that I realized that I had invested most of my savings in cryptocurrencies, leaving me with little or no financial backup should something go wrong or I was faced with an emergency. The stress deepened and I wasn't sleeping well. I decided to finally discuss this issue with my wife and together we decided to cash-out our initial fiat investment in crypto (I apologize to all the avid hodlers out there). As my initial investment had still grown substantially, I was still left with half of my crypto portfolio. My bank balance was healthy again. The stress was gone and I still had half my crypto portfolio. So, now I sleep well and am not affected by the extreme volatility in the crypto markets. I don't react with as much emotion and am more level headed. So, the lesson I have learned: avoid over investing and avoid stress. **I hope you have enjoyed this content and please feel free to comment below.**

What could go wrong?\n\nAnd then January 2018 happened. I saw the value of my portfolio plummet. Stress set in! It was around this time that I realized that I had invested most of my savings in cryptocurrencies, leaving me with little or no financial backup should something go wrong or I was faced with an emergency.\n\nThe stress deepened and I wasn't sleeping well. I decided to finally discuss this issue with my wife and together we decided to cash-out our initial fiat investment in crypto (I apologize to all the avid hodlers out there). As my initial investment had still grown substantially, I was still left with half of my crypto portfolio.\n\nMy bank balance was healthy again. The stress was gone and I still had half my crypto portfolio. So, now I sleep well and am not affected by the extreme volatility in the crypto markets. I don't react with as much emotion and am more level headed.\n\nSo, the lesson I have learned: avoid over investing and avoid stress.\n\n**I hope you have enjoyed this content and please feel free to comment below.**",

titleLessons I've Learned: Avoid over Investing & Avoid Stress!
body![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmVagTp8vzr5dm2CvctgodjeoJeShkZKeL5Q8YZRHYNLNt/image.png) I have only been actively invested in the crypto space since August 2017.

I don't react with as much emotion and am more level headed.\n\nSo, the lesson I have learned: avoid over investing and avoid stress.\n\n**I hope you have enjoyed this content and please feel free to comment below.**",

titleTEFL Volunteer Programs – How to Tell If They Are A Scam?
body## TEFL Volunteer Programs – What to look out for ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmZeWGL1PRoCFsNAytRuZZjuse4ZLU7zZoUndiLaBQdRMA/image.png) TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. Volunteer programmes involve teachers travelling to countries abroad, and into mostly rural areas and volunteer their services for a set period of time. This is a compassionate and wonderful thing to do, and there are many great organizations to work with who have that same compassion. However, there are those who try to take advantage of your drive to contribute. It is not unusual to be asked to pay a deposit to become part of the volunteer program and that in itself is not an indication of a scam. These programs have expenses. Host families need to be compensated for your stay in their home and the expense of feeding and housing you. However, there are scams. There are times when a volunteer arrives in a rural village where they are assigned to work for 3-months, only to find that the school or shelter does not exist, or is closed down. There are scams where a volunteer pays their non-refundable deposit and when they arrive they are told the family has filled the position or changed their minds. ## How can you tell? If you cannot easily look up the address, phone number and contact information of the host organization beware. You should be able to look up anyone local or abroad and talk to them before entering the program if you want. A host organization who is not easy to find, would not survive in the real world. As stated, it is not uncommon to be asked to pay a program fee. But the host organization should be able to show you where the money goes. Most, have a breakdown on their websites. If they do not, ask them to explain. If you have difficulty getting this information, beware. The host organization is experienced in planning flights and organizing arrivals and destination accommodation. They may offer to set up your flight and work you in with a group, which is a wise move. However, they cannot force you to buy seats on a particular flight or with a particular carrier. It should set off alarms when you are being told that you must purchase through particular vendors. That is a scam alert. Do your homework. Research the laws in the area where you are going. Some countries will offer a short-term tourist visa that is good for 120 days. But, if your volunteer program is for more than 3-months, you are required to have a real visa. Do not take anyone’s word for it. Do your own homework. After doing some research, use common sense and go for it. If you get the feeling something’s not right, stop and check it out. There are great opportunities waiting, so make sure you found one of them. **Hope you enjoyed this content. titleAuthentication of TEFL/TESOL Certificates
body## What is the difference between Apostille & Authentication? ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmbyRuVFR5cwZN6hgrKtRt3hJnxPzVq6B7NBHdzMuRkCj7/image.png) An Apostille is a form of authentication for documents for countries who are signatories to the Hague Convention of 1961. Apostilles are only used to authenticate documents to be used in another country. Authentication is used for documents from countries which are not signatories to the Hague Convention e.g. China, Vietnam and Saudi Arabia. Also, read the article ‘What is the difference between apostille & authentication?’ for further information. ### How to get a document Authenticated? Authentication can only be done with an original certificate (not a digital/scanned copy). Authentication must be done in your home country – first the certificate must be notarized by a Notary Public, then it must be sent to the Embassy concerned (e.g. China /Vietnam/ Saudi Arabia) for authentication/legalization. This can be an arduous and in some cases an expensive process. It is recommended that graduates have their TEFL certificates authenticated before leaving home to start a new English teaching job. It is further recommended that you use an agent to take care of this process for you as this will be well worth the money spent. There are many online companies around the world that will do the authentication on your behalf and mail all the authenticated documents back to you. One such company is ‘Be Authentic’ – a South African based company which provides such a service for South African students. *Unfortunately, the purpose of this article is not to provide a list different service providers around the globe – but you can easily do the research for yourself. ### Does a TEFL Certificate have to be authenticated for China and Vietnam? As of 1st April 2017, the Chinese government requires that all foreign teachers have their TEFL certificates authenticated. This process is apparently applies for the renewal of permits expiring this year for those teachers already working as English teachers in China. *There has been a considerable amount of confusion and discontent surrounding the imposition by a number of countries introducing the requirement of having TEFL/TESOL certificates authenticated. These authorities site the need for TEFL authentication due to the growing incidence of document fraud. Although this may well be the case, it has certainly led to a great deal of confusion and discontent in the TEFL community – with many often choosing alternative teaching destinations due to the increasing difficulties and hurdles to overcome. Confusion is further sewn due to the lack of information provided by authorities on the one hand and the multitude of inaccurate information disseminated by employers and agents on the other. It is our understanding (although still under considerable debate and conjecture) that online TEFL/TESOL certificates may be authenticated in the student’s country of origin due to the fact that online TEFL/TESOL course providers are often located in other parts of the world. *Some students working in Vietnam have had their TEFL/TESOL certificates notarized and authenticated in Vietnam – but it would be best to check with your employer. It must be further noted that the responsibility for having TEFL/TESOL certificates authenticated lies on the shoulders of the students and they should request the assistance and guidance of their prospective employers and agents. *It is not the responsibility of the TEFL/TESOL course provider to assist students/graduates in this regard. Visit our [website](http://www.onlinecoursestefl.com/) for information regarding TEFL/TESOL courses & training.

Confusion is further sewn due to the lack of information provided by authorities on the one hand and the multitude of inaccurate information disseminated by employers and agents on the other.\n\nIt is our understanding (although still under considerable debate and conjecture) that online TEFL/TESOL certificates may be authenticated in the student’s country of origin due to the fact that online TEFL/TESOL course providers are often located in other parts of the world. *It is not the responsibility of the TEFL/TESOL course provider to assist students/graduates in this regard.\n\nVisit our [website](http://www.onlinecoursestefl.com/) for information regarding TEFL/TESOL courses & training.",

titleUnrealistic Expectations in the TEFL Industry
body## Keeping it ‘Real’ in the TEFL Industry ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmTEtwcFgRQ7DQcRn6VL61emYxNbpPWiq9L6tpX9AN2MTQ/image.png) The TEFL industry is fraught with false promises and unrealistic expectations. Although the tone of this article may at times seem rather cynical, the overall aim is to lift the veil and reveal the absurdity of unrealistic expectations of many new TEFL teachers and hopefully clarify a few things in the process. Many newly certified TEFL teachers expect TEFL course providers to guarantee them employment once they have completed their TEFL courses. This is simply an unrealistic expectation. The same student who presumably completed a 3 or 4 year Bachelor’s degree (usually a requirement) did not hold their college or university to this same standard. If they had, it would be unlikely (in many cases) that they would be seeking employment as an English teacher abroad. However, after having completed a 4 week (in most cases) TEFL certificate, they now believe that the usual hiring processes and requirements do not apply to them. What about the interview process where an employer assesses the applicant to see if they are a fit? How could a TEFL provider promise a student a job with an employer the student has never met half way across the world? And how could a student expect this? This type of unrealistic expectation is in part perpetuated by some unscrupulous TEFL course providers who ‘guarantee’ employment for their graduates. [Click here](https://www.go-tefl.com/teflblog/guaranteed-tefl-job-placement-scam/) to read the article ‘Guaranteed TEFL Job Placement Scam.’ Many newly certified TEFL teachers expect to find initial employment in countries/regions which historically offer higher pay such as South Korea, Japan and the Middle East. What these new teachers fail to realise, is that demand for English teaching positions in these countries is high and that it is usually the most qualified and experienced of teachers that will be first in line. Some of these teachers will often give up the search (or blame the TEFL course provider of course) instead of shifting the focus of their employment search to other countries with perhaps more opportunities and less stringent requirements. What many TEFL teachers conveniently forget, is that relevant work experience also has its part to play in the TEFL industry where the usual ‘rules’ don’t seem to apply for some unknown reason. The truth is that there are many English teaching jobs available in all corners of the globe. A newly qualified TEFL teacher could always find an entry level position (perhaps in a country which is not their first choice) and gain some useful teaching experience which could later be used to find a better position – just like the ‘real’ world. Many newly certified TEFL teachers do not do sufficient research into the employment requirements of different countries and regions – and then feel duped (by the TEFL course provider of course) when they realise that they will be unable to fulfil their dream of funding their lifestyle on the French Riviera with part-time English lessons because they don’t have an EU passport. It is important for TEFL teachers to get informed about the varied teaching opportunities available to them taking into consideration their education, nationality, experience and suchlike. There is so much information available on the internet, forums, blogs, online job websites and [Facebook groups](https://www.facebook.com/groups/teflcommunity/). The overriding message to take away is that one can find meaningful employment and satisfaction in a TEFL teaching career as long as one remains realistic in one’s expectations. There are many teachers out there living wonderfully fulfilled lives and couldn’t imagine doing anything else. TEFL teaching can provide you with a comfortable life, but if you are expecting an easy path – this may be possible – but life isn’t always a bed of roses and may be littered with hurdles and challenges. If you are looking to get rich, then perhaps we can suggest becoming a Hedge Fund manager. title‘Guaranteed’ TEFL Job Placement Scam
body## Beware of the ‘Guaranteed’ TEFL Job ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmdE6yYGta9NokFNkc95SMLgJCev1RRNctAs2pDS1Ura6T/image.png) In order to fulfil your responsibilities as a professional English teacher, you will require adequate and [accredited TEFL/TESOL training](http://www.onlinecoursestefl.com/). Students deserve the best quality training from English teachers who have received professional training. The reality of the English teaching job market is that there are literally thousands of job vacancies available at any given time. This huge demand means that you do not have to pay for job placement. Many teachers around the world have found their own teaching positions without having paid anything. Remember that you should never pay an agent for job placement as the agent is paid a fee by the employer or school. So what about TEFL/TESOL providers offering ‘guaranteed’ job placement? Many TEFL/TESOL providers advertise ‘guaranteed’ job placement once you have completed your TEFL/TESOL training with them – this is simply a ruse to sign you up for one of their courses and should immediately sound alarm bells. These TEFL/TESOL providers then justify excessive course fees for the ‘promise’ of a teaching position you could simply have found yourself. Placing your future in the hands of a TESOL/TEFL provider may limit your options and you may find yourself being offered a job which isn’t a match. Think about this for one moment – what kind of employer or school would blindly accept a teaching applicant whom they have never even met or spoken to? How would they know that you would be a match for their particular school or institution? Also, what kind or quality of school would simply be willing to just hire anyone? When a TEFL/TESOL provider ‘guarantees’ you a job placement, you do not have the freedom to choose and may have to settle for a teaching position that does not match what is right for you. Some providers will place you in a location which is far from ideal (perhaps in a rural location far from ‘civilization’) or in a low paying job where you may struggle to make ends meet. You may be required to teach an excessive number of hours per week with little or no available teaching resources. Now, you really should be in a position to have a say in where you teach and the conditions of your employment! A ‘guaranteed’ job placement does not guarantee an ideal teaching experience. There are many ways of finding a teaching job – see the article [How do I find a TEFL Job](https://www.go-tefl.com/teflblog/how-do-i-find-a-tefl-job/). body## Keeping it ‘Real’ in the TEFL Industry ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmTEtwcFgRQ7DQcRn6VL61emYxNbpPWiq9L6tpX9AN2MTQ/image.png) The TEFL industry is fraught with false promises and unrealistic expectations. If you are looking to get rich, then perhaps we can suggest becoming a Hedge Fund manager. titleAuthentication of TEFL/TESOL Certificates
body## What is the difference between Apostille & Authentication? An Apostille is a form of authentication for documents for countries who are signatories to the Hague Convention of 1961.
