      "body": "I started noticing the downfall of human contact years ago. I decided to do something.\n\nI have always been an avid people watcher. It's fascinating to see people as they are. Observations led to patterns and understanding different personality traits. This led to noticing states of mind in body language through observing myself and finding similarities. As we grow personally, we all undergo changes mentally and to those who notice, spiritually.\n\nAs I saw the rise of technology and connectivity, there was a shift. I saw that people became more introverted, more recessed. Personal development was gradually stunted in many people who relied more upon external sources rather than looking within. The only human contact came from forced fake politeness in a business setting. \n\nI watched as genuine interactions crumbled and the new forms of communication became a crutch, an excuse, an escape and an easy way out. Generally, attention spans shortened more and more.\n\nSTOP AND SMELL THE ROSES\nADMIRE SOME DAMN CLOUDS\n\nAs time went on, mental illness set in. Depression, anxiety, narcissism, and a general lack of self worth. There are plenty of other reasons for this but let me get to the point.\n\nI decided to walk, as I like to do, down the sidewalk. I would look people in the eyes when I could, but no matter what, I would greet everyone with a genuine \"hello\" or \"hi\" or just a smile and wave.\n\nIt felt silly at first, sometimes demoralizing, at times just sad. I focused on treating everyone like a good friend, and felt it in my heart. Then the magic happens.\n\nI noticed the same sidewalk had a little more vibrance, people didn't seem as sad. People were more alert and not as distracted. Then gradually people, sometimes familiar people who remember greeting before would be smiling. I would greet people again who had completely ignored me before or quickly stared at their phone to avoid eye contact. These same people I greeted again greeted me in return. \n\nOvertime I have had random conversations with numerous individuals with the goal of authentic communication. \n\nSomedays I myself would be down or deep in thought and someone would say hello to me out of the blue.\n\nAmazing! I am so curious if this really was a real effect. A ripple of warm greetings pulling people back to humanity.\n\nI noticed as time passed, it became second nature and have had valuable and meaningful conversations since. It has helped my own personal growth immensely as well.\n\nIf you see the state of society declining like I do, maybe this idea could be beneficial in your own community. Maybe a stupid simple but real hello could change the way people treat eachother. Maybe we could be little candles lighting up the gloom.       "body": "The place I live in is dirty, smelly and dangerous. The saying as it goes \"city of murder, meth and auto theft\". Although, far worse happens. It's completely illegal to have aerial fireworks here, but when Forth of July rolls around, no one cares. I can't help but feel a little proud. This city of outlaws comes alive at night. \n\nFirework displays fill the air across the entire city. No one needs to travel anywhere to watch a fireworks display at some distant production. Everyone just pulls out the grills and beers, blocks the streets and starts raising hell from the comfort of backyards and driveways. Families, friends and neighbors come together. The sounds of explosions mixed with the occasional gunfire plants your mind straight into a war zone.\n\nThe fact of it is, our country is celebrating independence. What better way to celebrate is there? Each mortar that goes up is a potential risk of heavy fines and jail time. Each mortar is a \"#*$@ you\" to regulation. As the whole city blows up, the risk goes down. Police quickly become so overwhelmed. Strength in numbers.\n\nI often think about the risk of death our founding fathers faced in signing the Declaration of Independence. They understood the dream of freedom is worth dying for. Just the idea of it, drove us all together. As every person who ever took up arms to defend our country has done. The US was not built on hugs. This land was and still is wild. \n\nAs people drink and party, I hope we all take the time to reflect on how fragile freedom is. How important it is to those of us lucky enough to live in this era. How many there are that wept and bled so we can live. What a powerful sacrifice it is. I will never forget that. \n\nIf we are called upon so others after us can live with freedom, would you be willing? Could you let go of everything to ensure the safety of millions who aren't even born yet? Generations you would never meet? People who would never know your name? Could you search your heart and make the same sacrifice?\n\nI think of all of you, and honor your wild daring spirits. Thank you.\n\nHappy 241st birthday.",
