      "body": "## *This weekend shall be an interesting one.*\n\n***\n\nThis weekend my team and i will be exploring Letchworth Village and its abandoned Development center. This abandoned forgotten piece of history is north of  New York City, secluded from life and sitting awaiting for life to visit its history. \n# *But...*\n\n*Before we go, lets examine its history.*\n\n\n![letchworth village 083.JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmPkd9SaWYYCjXvsMuRa8RuEA8fZjhuJcxtbDcQYpPSMB3/letchworth%20village%20083.JPG)\n\nBuilt as a residential institution for the “physically and mentally disabled,” Letchworth Village opened in 1911, in the hamlet of Thiells in New York’s Rockland County. It sits on a massive 2,362 acre site. Nature has been quick to reclaim its dominion over these unhallowed grounds, shrouding an unpleasant memory in a thick green veil.   \n\n\nThe *Minnisceongo Creek* cuts the grounds in two, designating areas for the male/female which were meant never to interact.  Separate living and training houses for children, able-bodied adults, and the infirm (not phyisically of mentally strong) were not to exceed two stories or house over 70 inmates.\n\nThe actions took in the  laboratory facility would be considered sinister to us today if it were still being done. Unable to give or deny consent, many children became oblivious test subjects- In the  1950, the institution gained such reputation as the site of one of the first human trials of a still-experimental polio vaccine.  Brain specimens were harvested from deceased residents and stored in jars. \n\n![girls-group.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmPeXBJpR1NY9DiDaWgK6RXHUCcs6XhWjbjFpNjt9Jjp6C/girls-group.jpg)\n\nThe well-intentioned plans for Letchworth Village didn’t hold up in practice, and by 1942, the population had increased to twice its intended occupancy.  From here, its sadly underfunded facilities fell into a decline.  Many of the residents, whose condition required ample time and attention for feeding, became seriously ill or malnourished as a result of overcrowding.  At one point, over 500 patients slept on mattresses in hallways and dayrooms of the facility, attended by a completely overwhelmed staff tasked with such the impossible.\n\nWhat seems probably most disturbing about the facility, was that the majority of the residents were children, ages ranging from 5 to 16 years old, that were abandoned there by their parents. This facility operated during an age where things like epilepsy, bipolar disorder, or other afflictions were still confusing and relatively unknown to society.\n\nWith conditions so deteriorating and so horrendous, even staff members began to turn on each other, with many assaults and rapes reported amongst co-workers.\n\nThroughout the mid-1900s, Letchworth saw hundreds of patients die. Like said earlier, Some of the patients had their brains extracted from their skulls and kept on display in the laboratory. It blows my mind that this place was able to operate for 85 years!\n\nLetchworth Village was finally closed due to asbestos found in the walls and on surfaces used for experiments. It wasn't difficult to get there but to enter the buildings took some time to figure out. The buildings are fenced and guarded with patrol cars that circle the area.\nWe Were Almost Caught!!\nBUT.. Luckily we weren't. \nBut we were able to slip by and enter ONE of the buildings in the area. The rest were boarded or gated with no easy access. BUT...@Spenceryan was able to find a window with its bars pulled open. \nWith our intense curiosity and hunger for exploration....\n\n# We Slipped Right In!\n***\n*Brief Kings Park Psychiatric Center History*\n***\nThe Kings Park Lunatic Asylum was established in 1885 and was set forth to help relieve New York City's growing mentally ill population. \n\nThe entire hospital became a self-sufficient community; the patients and staff performed a wide variety of tasks including farming, construction, clothes-making, and food preparation. Kings Park Hospital expanded to over 150 buildings, which included a power plant and a railroad spur to transport passengers, coal, and construction materials from the Long Island Rail Road. \n\nThe campus included an area for Tuberculosis patients, as well as a large section devoted to caring for war veterans. At the turn of the century, the hospital had already grown to 2,697 patients and 454 staff workers. The hospital reached its peak population at 9,303 patients in 1954, and became quite overcrowded like so many other state run mental health centers at the time.\n\n\nThe cost to run such an enormous facility became too large of a burden for the state that the hospital began closing buildings in a slow but steady process in 1970. Some Buildings have been demolished or have been restored to be used as a psychiatric center. \n### BUT...\n\n### Before i go into what i personally see in the photo, let me give you a brief  summary of the history of The Pilgrim State Psychiatric Center in Long Island.\n*** \nIn the 1920s, New York State had operated six mental hospitals to facilitate the growing need for psychiatric care, and all were extremely overcrowded. The state's answer was to build the solution to this problem that plagued the New York City area once and for all - Pilgrim State Hospital.\n\nOriginally designed to house 12,500 patients on 1,900 acres of land, Pilgrim still holds the record of being the largest psychiatric hospital in the world - its peak patient population at one time was 16,000. The original hospital constructed from 1930-1941 consisted of four large continued treatment groups, each having about six separate buildings. The hospital also included a large medical building where patients and employees with acute diseases would be diagnosed, as well as housing laboratories, consultation rooms, a nursing school, and the pathology department. This building was flanked by two large reception buildings, where new patients would stay for an average of one month to be examined and diagnosed. These two buildings were kept separate by gender, and connecting corridors on each floor allowed patients and staff to work closely and quickly between the common medical facility.\n\nAlso on campus was a tall hospital building for chronic patients, a theater, employee and nurses' homes, a bakery, laundry, firehouse, power plant, and a farm which included a horse barn and  piggery. Doctors and their families lived a small community on campus, but separated from the hospital by a major road (and later the Sagitkos Parkway). A ten acre cemetery lies behind a brick water tower, where unclaimed bodies were buried with a simple headstone engraved with a patient number. They include:\n\n* Insulin shock therapy: The patient is injected with large doses of insulin, which causes convulsion and coma. .\n* Metrazol shock therapy: Injections of Metrazol (or commercially known as cardiazol) quickly induces powerful seizures.\n* Electric shock therapy: Currents of electricity are passed through the brain to induce grand mal seizures, commonly      used to treat schizophrenia and mood disorders.
