| body | <b>Ego Death</b> Many users of high doses of LSD report a total separation from the sense of self. In the most real sense, an Ego Death experience is a lot like dying, because it totally disrupts our sense of living. Without an Ego, we cannot live, thus, when our Ego dies, we as an individual die (not physically, but mentally). People who have ego death experiences usually report one of three things (and this is why LSD can be so dangerous): 1. "Seeing God" - More on this later. 2. Wanting to end their life (some even do so) 3. Seeing the meaninglessness of the universe, accepting it, and deciding to live in spite of it. Ego Death experiences are almost always very personally difficult and challenging. Many people feel fundamentally changed after allowing their Ego to die. I am here to attempt to explain why and elaborate on what many people experience. I am also here to hopefully convince you to free your mind in ways you never thought possible. Hint: Pick the third option. These are not my original thoughts. All of it comes from <b>Albert Camus</b>. I simply saw the connection between Ego Death and The Absurd and thought the LSD community might be interested in hearing about it. <b>The Absurd</b> The concept of The Absurd gives a name to the paradox of the human search for meaning, and our inability to find it in a meaningless universe. Primarily, the works covering The Absurd concern themselves with what a rational response to experiencing the meaninglessness of the universe would be. Typically, there are three positions: <b>1. <i>Nihilism</i></b> A Nihilist is someone who sees or experiences the fundamental meaninglessness of the universe, accepts it, and does not bother finding any meaning. A Nihilist is highly likely to kill themselves or engage in <i>true hedonism</i>, that is, the unrepentant self-interested pursuit of happiness. True Nihilists are extremely rare in our society due to the fact that their lives usually end in suicide or a jail cell. Camus argues that Nihilism is not the answer to an experience with The Absurd. He argues that ending one's life does not counter The Absurd or address it: it is essentially a non-answer. To kill oneself in the face of the absurd is the equivalent of saying "Life is meaningless, therefor life is not worth living/I can do whatever I want including kill myself." <b>2. <i>Existentialism</i></b> An Existentialist is someone who experiences the meaninglessness of the universe, and creates their own meaning. Most deeply religious people are Existentialists. Existentialists believe there is a reality beyond the Absurd, and as such, has meaning. One does not have to be religious to be an Existentialist. If you believe in any meaning or reality above the absurd, you are an Existentialist. Camus argues that this is not rational because it requires a "leap of faith," that is, a jump in logic that cannot be philosophically defended. Camus calls this <b>"Philosophical suicide"</b> As opposed to regular suicide. <b>3. <i>Absurdism</i></b> An Absurdist is someone who experiences the meaninglessness of the universe, and instead of resigning to it, or trying to manufacture meaning independent of the Absurd, they live <i>in spite of meaninglessness.</i> "Camus endorsed this solution, believing that <i>by accepting the Absurd, one can achieve the greatest extent of their freedom, and that by recognizing no religious or other moral constraints and by revolting against the Absurd while simultaneously accepting it as unstoppable, one could possibly be content from the personal meaning constructed in the process."</i> Absurdists find meaning in the Absurd. That is, they find meaning in revolting against it. By revolting against the meaninglessness of the universe, one must accept it. You cannot revolt against something that doesn't exist. <b>LSD</b> Now, many of you are wondering how this all connects back to psychedelics. The attentive reader likely already knows where I am going with this. Many of you who have taken psychedelics feel some kind of internal liberation from your experience. Some of you might have had your lives completely changed. I'm here to tell you that <b>the primary effect of LSD is a confrontation with the Absurd.</b> I am also here to tell you that embracing the Absurd, like Camus advocated for, will liberate your mind on LSD like you wouldn't believe. <b><i>Freeing your mind on LSD</i></b> When you're on acid, you are in the drivers seat. I am here to argue that every trip experience is a court with the Absurd. If you don't want to confront meaninglessness, you won't, and you won't have a true Ego Death experience as a result. I can understand why you wouldn't: as you get closer and closer to confronting the Absurd, suicide doesn't seem so irrational, and life loses meaning. To the untrained mind, this is terrifying and very well will scare you out of an ego death experience. It's fucking scary to come that close and familiar with the concept of killing yourself. However, by embracing the absurd, and living/tripping in spite of it, you can enter an ego death experience without fear of the suicidal option. Ego Death without fear. How cool is that? You aren't afraid because you find meaning in meaninglessness. Once you get over this fear, you are literally completely free to control your mind. <b>A Nihilist</b> doesn't want to court the absurd and thus likely never will because of the implication (suicide isn't such a bad option). A Nihilist limits themselves and their trip experience due to the nuclear option lying quietly inside of their minds. <b>An Existentialist</b> will always hit a barrier when courting the Absurd. No matter how hard they try, they will never be able to overcome the leap of faith that they have internally accepted, whatever it is. They will stay within their ego, unable to escape their consciousness because as soon as they let go of that leap of faith, they have no life-line. Some existentialists might be able to overcome this barrier, but they will not do so without significant personal struggle. It is almost certain that once they do so, they will not be able to go back to their former selves. This is because once they witness the Absurd in full, they are never able to rationalize it against their preconceived or manufactured meaning. This is where I was and where most people are. When I had my first ego death experience, I had to let a very real part of me die and it was incredibly stressful. It was a conscious decision. I distinctly remember thinking "This is why people who seem perfectly reasonable end up killing themselves on LSD." Once I embraced the meaninglessness of life, it was like a door opened, and I stepped outside of my consciousness for the first time in my life. A religious existentialist will likely stop at the door to ego death. I can't say for sure, but I am (personally) inclined to believe that "seeing God" in an ego death experience is not ego death - it is merely running up against the door to it. I say this because the concept of God/Meaning/Other is a part of our consciousness - you cannot "see God" and exit your consciousness at the same time. Again, this is my personal opinion. I'm not trying to paint anyone's experience. The experience of opening the door to ego death is essentially the realization that our concept of meaning in life lies under the absurd, not beyond it. That is to say, our concept of meaning doesn't address the Absurd and runs contradictory to it. Essentially, in order to let your ego die, you must accept that your conception of meaning is not "the one." However, <b>an Absurdist</b> doesn't have these limitations. They enjoy the Absurd. It sings music to them as they draw near it. They are able to let their ego die without fear, because the death of their ego is part of their world view: they find meaning in their war with the Absurd. Thus, every time they trip, they have full control over their head space. They aren't afraid - there is nothing to fear here. No matter how much their ego slips away, desired or not, it is not a stressful experience. <b>Once you've conquered the Absurd, you have conquered death and are happy to tell the beautiful tale.</b> You can do this without drugs, too. Once an absurdist opens the door to their ego death, they find their meaning. No longer does opening that door feel like a fundamental violation of our human condition. No longer does opening the door feel like killing yourself in a sad sense, killing God, or any other thing. It just becomes a part of our human condition. Absurdists essentially witness the meaning of life every time their ego dies. I will end this with a song that I find embodies this mode of thinking very well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdibCx5aZsI <b>TL;DR: Liberate your mind, die without fear, and enter the mind of the Absurdist. Find meaning in the paradox of meaninglessness.</b> |

| body | TL;DR at the bottom for the sum-up of what I learned from my 400 ug trip Sorry if I am somewhat short on details because I've actually had to slowly recollect what I experienced the night I took 400 ug. I tripped on 400 ug 2 weeks ago, and 300 ug 1 week ago in an attempt to "re-experience" what I saw because what I saw was so profound, yet so hard to piece together. So I started my trip at about 2 pm by taking 2 tabs, which had 0 flavor and hit me like a brick. I knew I wanted to trip balls, so as soon as they kicked in I took another 2 and smoked bowl and started watching Rick and Morty (which I would end up watching the entirety of, start to finish). At this point, the visuals were already pretty intense. Nothing profound was experienced other than Rick and Morty feeling like it had really deep and profound meaning hidden inside of it, behind all the dick jokes and bodily humor. After a few episodes, the other two tabs kicked in. At this point, I can only describe my experience as complete and total control over what I was witnessing. I could control my mood by getting into the mind of various R&M characters. Jerry Smith was extremely negative and induced anxiety. He refused to accept alternate points of view, and couldn't see the positive in anything. He was stuck in the past and obstinate. Any time I mind-melded with Jerry, things got really bad. And really scary. I started to seriously empathize with Rick. Morty became a paradox of anxiety in beauty, where you could only experience what Morty was learning by diving into the anxiety that came with it. The more I dove into Morty, the more beautiful things became. The more profound things became. With this, came anxiety. But it was a good kind. The kind of anxiety you get when your world view is being challenged and expanded. Morty, no matter how anxious he was, no matter how scared he was, always persisted. Morty got to learn lessons that characters like Jerry simply didn't get to enjoy just because they were so self absorbed and risk averse. At this point, I started freaking out. I started freaking out in the sense that I was realizing how much we are being lied to in our daily lives. How often we are told to unilaterally consider someone a bad person. How often we judge people. How often we are told that there is no good in a situation. Jerry was the embodiment of society at large, and Morty was the one seeing past all of it. Then this scene happened. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtVITdhMo2g This scene happened while I was almost totally mind-melded with Morty. Rick was talking to ME. Rick, I'M FREAKING OUT! That was me. Do you see Morty's reaction, and hear the music? That was me. I was Morty. At this point, I was sent into what I can only describe as the most psychedelic experience I think I'll ever experience in my life. Things got fast. I got sent through the entire course of human history. I could control whether or not things were getting better or worse. I experienced our first contact with aliens. I experienced us curing cancer. I experienced us colonizing other planets and harnessing the power of suns. I experienced the entire course of human history until the end of reality. Once I hit the end of reality, I became totally disconnected from the universe. There was nothing but the fundamental operations that allow our universe to operate. Our entire reality was predicated on paradox and hypocrisy. We couldn't have a world without conflict. We couldn't have a world without tension and argument. Rick and Morty embodied this conflict in the best of ways. Rick is essentially Morty's antagonist, but they both develop each other's characters in profound ways. I realized that we literally cannot develop as a society without having our views challenged. We can never be Morty without a Rick. Someone who is unpopular and controversial that challenges our opinions and world views. It doesn't mean we have to accept their particular world view, but it does mean we have to consider ours. Mind you, at this point, what I was seeing wasn't the world around me (ie the physical realm in which I was existing). I was experiencing the entire course of human history through the lens of who acted as a Rick, and who acted as a Morty. Hitler was a Rick. Hitler was a horrible person, but I realized we wouldn't have the world we have if Hitler hadn't happened. We wouldn't have the national alliances we have. Over 6 million people had to die to propel our society forward like that. I experienced determinism - that is, the future is already laid out for us, we're just along for the ride. I experienced oblivion - the total lack of a reality. I cried. I cried probably the most deeply I've ever cried in my life. I cried because I had spent so much of my life as a cynic, and spent so much of my life pretending like certain people had no value. In the weeks following this experience, I tripped on 300 ug in an attempt to recollect my thoughts and, in a sense, confirm what I saw. Everything linked back together and made sense, and that trip is largely why I remember anything from the 400 ug trip. In the following weeks, I've become a lot more optimistic for our society. I know a lot of us are disenchanted with the current political climate, and a lot of us aren't happy with an inflammatory bigot as our president, but I want you to know that people like Donald Drumpf are Ricks. People like Hitler are Ricks. People burned at the cross for advancing science are Ricks. We don't have to like them. We don't have to accept their world view. However, we do have to allow them to exist. Our society can only move forward as a result, stronger than what it was previously. TL;DR: I experienced that everyone in our world is either a Rick or a Morty. The Ricks are unpopular and cause conflict in our world, but ultimately, through our experience with said Ricks, we learn and grow as a society. Society can only move forward if we allow Ricks to exist, and society can only move forward if we can all be like Morty and let our beliefs be challenged. We don't have to adopt the Rick's world view, but we do have to consider our own. Then there are Jerries. Don't be a Jerry. |
