As a longtime BioWare fan, the way the game and the developers were raked over the coals was painful to watch. And I’m not saying it wasn’t deserved – the game was released in a very buggy state, there were some issues with the writing, and things were promised that weren’t delivered. I personally still enjoyed the game, especially after all the patches were released, but I do understand why people feel too put off to give it another chance.  \n\nBut this isn’t a post about Andromeda. It’s about the original Mass Effect and that it’s not a very good game in retrospect. Its sequels, 2 and 3, are incredible to this day despite 3’s horrendous ending. But the first one? Not so much.\n\nI recently decided to replay the series, starting from 1 and eventually making my way over to Andromeda. Old graphics and clunky gameplay don’t bother me, so it’s not that the game didn’t “age” well. No, as I was playing, I found myself thinking more and more that it’s just not a very good game.\n\n![maxresdefault.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmafUuRT4PAmsFJp5F7dZJ4qq5qqU9aZADv1bRh9jsj848/maxresdefault.jpg)\n<center><i>Wrex? What did they do to you, buddy?</i></center>\n\nThe main plot is pretty basic – good enough to keep you invested the first time, but not nearly enough to wow. It’s safe, which I suppose is fine for the first game in a trilogy. The voice acting is, at times, very stiff. I’m not talking about Mark Meer’s neutral performance as male Shepard, but rather the side characters. Sometimes the voice actor even changes, as in C-Sec officer Chellick’s case. He goes from having one distinct voice to having a completely different voice! This is the same for the C-Sec Requisition Officer. You can tell the second voice actor tried his best to imitate the first one, but it’s still obvious that they’re two different people. I’ll never understand why they gave two of their characters two different voices that go back and forth.  \n\nThe side quests, if they can even be called that, are dull and tedious. Planetary exploration is a chore more than a delight, and I actually get so bored driving around in the Mako that I always put some music on to keep me entertained.\n\n![1 495ylSkVdFMXHmT4tKyV8g.jpeg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmP491ac87GiaR2Cq8RHmbxieQsczjvRqvY7ETdiUrq2iA/1%20495ylSkVdFMXHmT4tKyV8g.jpeg) \n<center><i>What do you mean driving a clunky vehicle up a steep cliff isn't your idea of fun?!</i></center>\n\nIt’s kind of a bitter pill to swallow, because when this game came out I was so in love with it that I played it over and over again. I don’t know what changed in me personally that I now find it difficult to play through it, since I can play older games and my love for them will remain unchanged. All that I know is that if I had to play the original Mass Effect for the first time today, I’d probably grudgingly finish it and never look at it again. Nostalgia keeps making me come back, though. Damn those nostalgia goggles!  \n\nWhy is Mass Effect on my recommended list, I hear you wonder? Because 1 may be bad, but the rest of the series is still excellent and I personally can’t jump into the rest of the series without playing from the start. \n\nWhat do you guys think? Are there games that you once loved so much only to one day realize that they’re not very good? Tell me and let's despair together!",

I’m not joking when I say it features some of the best writing in any of the games I have ever played, and I’ve played many. It’s witty, it’s grim, and it’s dramatic. If you love vampires as much as I do and you feel despair over the ridiculous turn they’ve taken in recent years, then you’ll love this. There are no sparkly vampires to be found here, only secret societies, vampiric law called the Masquerade, conspiracies, and a few werewolves that would love to kill you.\n\nUnfortunately the vanilla game is buggy because Activision forced Troika to publish it before it was really finished, but the (still active) fan base has resolved that issue. There’s a fan patch that’s still updated fairly regularly, and it’s very easy to install.\n\nI cannot recommend this game enough. If a villain is well written, chances are they'll be my favorite character. \n\nThe interesting thing about Deadpool is that he falls into both the anti-villain and anti-hero categories, since his allegiances shift and change so often during the course of his story. \n\nDo rethink a few of the villains that you may not have thought too much about before. There are many of sympathetic or anti-villains out there, but they tend to get dismissed by most people. Mostly just because most people watch or read something with a \"surface level\" interpretation. Not that everything needs to be overanalyzed, of course, and sometimes a villain is just a villain, but it's a lot of fun to dig a little deeper. At least it is for me. :)",

      "body": "This is a really cool way to think about anti-villains and makes me want to revisit some of the villains from my favorite shows to see if they fit into this role. Off the top of my head the only anti-villain i can really think of is deadpool just because he's such an iconic anti-villain but now i'm going to have to rethink a lot of villains. \n\nIn terms of sympathetic villains though I really found the tv series Gotham to be amazing for this reason. The backstories to characters like the penguin, riddler and mr freeze are amazing and truly make you both sympathize with them and view them in an entire different light.",

Specifically, how to create a sympathetic and multi-dimensional villain. The “anti-villain”, if you will.\n\nFor those unfamiliar with the term “anti-villain”, it’s used to describe villains who believe wholeheartedly that what they’re doing is for the greater good, but their actions – and consequently the results of their actions - end up being the opposite of anything good. Like anti-heroes, they believe that “the ends justify the means”, but unlike anti-heroes, their beliefs are never validated.   \n\nAnyone can create a villain, but not everyone knows how to create a sympathetic one. Not every villain <i>needs</i> to be sympathetic to be entertaining, of course! DC’s <i>The Joker</i> is a fantastic example of a villain that isn’t sympathetic in any way, but who still manages to excite and thrill the audience. \n\nBut in my experience, villains that make the audience uncomfortable with how human they are during their weakest moments are the most compelling and successful kind of antagonists. If your audience is split on what to make of the villain - one side loving that villain dearly and hoping for some kind of redemption while the other side absolutely hates them - then you can pat yourself on the back because mission accomplished! You don’t ever want anyone to look at your bad guy and go, “meh.”\n\n<b>1. He’s Just a Poor Boy (From a Poor Family)</b>\n\nCreate some kind of tragic backstory for them. The most common version of this is giving your villain a truly awful childhood, but it really is up to you. You might find that the “sad childhood” concept has been done to death, so don’t be afraid to try something new! \n\nThere are so many options to pick and choose from – they can be a broken person after losing the love of their life, or instead they can be someone who had to resort to doing terrible things simply to survive. The Bad Guy Who Thinks He’s the Good Guy</b>\n\nYour villain needs to believe that what they’re doing is ultimately what is best for everyone involved. To them, they’re the hero in your story. Their motivations are pure, but their actions are not. \n\n<b>3. Yes, More Mr. Nice Guy</b>\n\nDon’t be afraid to make your villain likeable. This doesn’t mean you have to turn them into a cheerful goofball, but do try and humanize them as much as possible. \n\nOne way to do this is to make them gentle when no one would expect them to be.       "body": "The Witcher 3 has become the one I compare all other RPGs to. It might be a little unfair, but CDPR set the bar really high with that one and I do think it's time for other developers to get with the program!  :)\n\nIt does feel like the developers of KCD either didn't have the time to fine tune the reaction system, or don't have the experience for it? I know my reputation dropping whether anyone sees me stealing or not would drive me insane. \n\nUrgh, I hate that! I hate it when a game ranks up the stakes and then goes \"lol never mind,\" which completely takes me out of the experience. If the game doesn't really care about the decisions you make, why should the player? :(",

      "body": "Since it’s <i>International Women’s Day</i> today, I thought I’d celebrate by writing a post about the five fictional female characters who inspired me, who continue to inspire me, and who will always inspire me. \n\n<b>1. Tifa Lockhart (Final Fantasy VII)</b>\n\n<center>![TifaL.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmXFdBDQLS1kURjeAk92GzFPRYGs6RjyW9wHv1m5DcxmPK/TifaL.png)</center>\n\nTifa is the fictional love of my life. I adored her from the moment she showed up on my screen in 1999, talking about how much she’d love to fill her bar with flowers so she could brighten the place up  a little. She dreams of being saved by her “hero” one day, but when the going gets tough, Tifa is almost always the one doing the rescuing. The game’s male lead would be an absolute mess without her there to pick up the pieces.   \n\nShe’s physically strong, she’s courageous, she’s emotional, she’s envious, she’s kind, and sometimes she’s even a little cowardly, especially when it comes to her emotions. Tifa showed me that it was okay for women to be more than one thing at a time. \n\n<b>2. I fell in love with Padmé long before I fell in love with Leia.\n\nSadly, she gets a bad rap because it’s still cool to hate on the Prequels and everything that comes with it, and not nearly enough people give her the credit she deserves. Like Leia, Padmé fought on the front lines with little regard to her own safety. She was beautiful and feminine, showing little girls everywhere that strength came in many different forms. She wasn’t afraid to put her life on the line when the cause she believed in demanded it, and the Rebellion would not have existed without her. \n\n<b>3. Wonder Woman, a.k.a. Diana Prince (DC Comics)</b>\n\n![WonderWomanTrenches.0.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmVezUCWh6Eb5teY5ihat78DYzBcLKA8Ja3HdyxxfHqaSF/WonderWomanTrenches.0.jpg)\n\nWonder Woman is probably the most obvious one on this list, but there’s no way she couldn’t be on it. The Princess of Themyscira is an inspiration to grown women and little girls all over the world, and for such good reason. You have to be pretty damn special to be able to handle the likes of Superman and Batman without cracking!\n\nIn all seriousness though, the movie <i>Wonder Woman</i> was an incredible experience for me and for many other women out there. I really have no words to explain how powerful I felt watching her move on screen – a movie made by a woman, for women - and I know many others feel the same way that I do. \n\n<b>4. Her strength lies in her intelligence, and her compassion. Seeing her get excited about science made me feel excited about science, and anyone who went to high school with me will know that’s quite a feat. I truly hope she inspires little girls everywhere to pursue the sciences. \n\n<b>5. My darling Chloe. She’s never really one of the “good guys”, but also never really a part of the “bad guys” either. \n\nChloe plays both sides in a conflict to her own advantage, and her allegiances can and will change depending on the situation. But despite her selfish nature, she always ends up doing the right thing. \n\nIt’s not often that you’ll see a female character that is morally complex, and since I am eternally obsessed with such characters there was simply no way I couldn’t love her. Well written and a breath of fresh air, Chloe remains one of the best things to come out of the Uncharted series.",

      "body": "This is an amazing topic and I think it's one of the reasons the witcher series stands out as such a stable in RPG's now. I like games with a reputation system because it's a reflection of your choices in another manner, I just feel like many games with this don't implement it well; for example in kingdom come your reputation for the city goes down even if absolutely no one sees you steal/pickpocket from someone. I really like how the game reacts to your clothes/apearance/reputation and I just wish they took it that one extra step to make you feel like your decisions matter. \n\n\n****Very early (first hour of game) and very minor spoiler ahead, I did keep it pretty vague too*****\n\n******\n\n******\n\n\nAnother example is near the very start of the game you have the option to try and rescue a girl, but even if you don't try to rescue her she still survives and you still have a chance to be with her. When it's happening, it really gives you this gut wrenching moral decision but no matter what you choose it just doesn't matter bc the outcome will be the same later.\n\nIt does sadden me though that the game only has one set ending because I feel like it just has so much potential with the scope of the story.",
