Retro Film Review: Widow's Peak (1994)

|  While the great majority of films are shot simply in order to make money, film makers' motives sometimes can be somewhat more complex. An interesting example is *Widows' Peak*, 1994 British- Irish comedy directed by John Irvin. Hugh Leonard wrote the script many years ago with a sole purpose to provide opportunity for Maureen O'Sullivan and her daughter Mia Farrow to play opposite each other. The years have passed and Mia Farrow had to play the role originally written for her mother. The plot of this film is set in 1920s Ireland. War and political turmoil are far behind the people who live in a small town of Kilshannon, and that includes even the group of local rich widows who live in the houses built on the hill overlooking town. The unofficial leader of the pack and town's matriarch is Mrs. Doyle- Coulnihan a.k.a. Mrs. DC (played by Joan Plowright) who, for some unspecified reasons, adopted 40-year old spinster Miss O'Hare (played by Mia Farrow) to the group. Everyday life is interrupted with arrival of Mrs. Edwina Broome (played by Natasha Richardson), American war-widow. The beautiful American would soon catch the eye of Mrs. DC's son Godfrey (played by Adrian Dunbar), but this is not the only event to stir gossip in small town. For some unknown reason Miss O'Hare dislikes Mrs. Broome and mutual antipathy soon evolves in open hostility between the women. *Widows' Peak* is not particularly memorable film but it has all the right ingredients for passable entertainment - superb cast that combines British and Irish talents, somewhat exotic period setting and more than capable director in the form of John Irvin. The plot, with the surprise twist that wasn't exactly a surprise, is not particularly strong, but the actors and setting mostly manage to rise above such deficiencies. To the untrained ears Mia Farrow's Irish accent seems very convincing, and same can be said for Natasha Richardson and her take on American accent. As a result, *Widows' Peak*, with its postcard version of 1920s Ireland and sympathetic portrayal of small town and its peculiarities, represents a textbook example of successful escapist entertainment.
