From Bitcoin, everything else was spawned. It gave developers new ideas and proved there was a market for the new technology. \n\nThe invention and more importantly – the success of Bitcoin opened the floodgates. When you ask yourself, should I invest in cryptocurrency? Remember the history of Bitcoin and the massive growth this industry has already shown. Cryptocurrency incentivizes new tech companies and investors alike to speculate on which tech will be the next big thing. \n\nCryptocurrency is dominated by Bitcoin and Ethereum. Every other coin is highly dependent on these two protocols. Why? Because altcoins receive their value in relation to Bitcoin and Ethereum. It is the most secure cryptocurrency.</strong> The increased level of security comes from its decentralization. It’s akin to having thousands of witnesses watching each transaction. \n\n<h2>3 Reasons to NOT Invest in Bitcoin</h2>\nShould I invest in Bitcoin? Although I am a believer in the technology and the coin, investing in cryptocurrency is not for everyone. \n\n\n•<strong>You can’t afford to lose.</strong> Bitcoin and cryptocurrency, in general, is a gamble. Only invest with money you can lose and still be alright financially.\n\n•<strong>You don’t understand the technology.</strong> How do I invest in Bitcoin? It’s tempting to jump in the hype and succumb to FOMO. However, if you can’t fathom how it works, it’s not a good investment. Only put your money into industries you understand. This will keep you from being blindsided by market events. \n\n•<strong>You believe in government regulation.</strong> If you trust that the government is the only entity that can add value to a currency, then Bitcoin is not for you. The value of Bitcoin comes from the large network of users who mine the coin and conduct transactions on the blockchain. It is completely divorced from centralized power structures.\n\n3 Reasons to Invest in Ethereum\nWhen beginners start investing in cryptocurrency, after learning about Bitcoin, the next popular coin to look into is Ethereum. <strong>Ethereum builds upon the success of blockchain and increases its utility to more than a simple value exchange.</strong> Users can make their own tokens on the protocol allowing for investors to buy into dAPPs. For many, it forms the foundation of their own company. It is being used as a tool to build the next generation of the internet. When new people are attracted to crypto, they will coalesce around a product they understand. \n\n<strong>3. The future is bright. </strong>The creators of Ethereum actively maintain the blockchain and community around it. There are plans to switch to a Proof-of-Stake method of consensus in the near future. To conduct a hard fork like this will take incredible cohesion for a decentralized platform. If that happens, it will prove the viability of ETH well into the future making it lucrative to invest in Ethereum. \n\n<h2>3 Reasons to NOT Invest in Ethereum</h2>\nETH is not for everyone, there are some concerns to review if you are a potential investor. \n\n<strong>1. Its complexity raises concerns. </strong>Ethereum is built to allow for more utility than Bitcoin affords. Developers can build dAPPs, use smart contracts, even create their own tokens. Unfortunately, this complexity comes with a cost - while the blockchain is safe the smart contracts build on top of it might have security issues. \n\nEarly in its inception, Ethereum <a href=\"https://www.coindesk.com/ethereum-classic-explained-blockchain/\">wallets were robbed</a>  – big ones. New companies built on the ETH blockchain created private addresses for users to invest in. It was these supposedly “safe” addresses that were hacked into. While the problem was fixed, it shows the dangers for investors. It’s important to remember that the technology is still new. Mistakes happen. \n\n<strong>2. There is newer and probably better technology.</strong> While ETH might have been the first decentralized platform for smart contracts, it is not the only one. It’s expensive.</strong> Because of the popularity, the price of buying into Ethereum is higher than most coins. Couple this price with the uncertainty of a higher market cap and you have a recipe for a loss. Learning this term will help you make decisions on how to invest in Bitcoin. High market caps show more popularity and more use. Low market caps exist for coins not well known or used. Investing in cryptocurrency with a coin featuring a low market cap is relatively affordable but there is a higher probability it fails. \n\nMeanwhile, investing in a coin with a large market cap is more expensive, less likely to fail but without the potential for explosive growth (maybe). Some protocols feature a finite supply which makes them de-inflationary currencies. It’s not a stagnant industry, quite the opposite. Compare it to traditional assets being traded on the NYSE where in-depth analysis will likely put you to sleep. If you want to make money, you need to be actively engaged with your money. \n\n <strong>• Potential for Explosive Growth. </strong>Enter a world where new technology is invented on a daily basis and some gains reach ludicrous heights, I'm talking 300%+ gains overnight. You could always invest in the stock market and wait for established companies to increase their value by single percentage points. Being safe is boring. Not the case with crypto. When you lose, you lose it all. The lack of regulation means your gains are uncapped but so are your losses.\n\n<strong> • Scams are everywhere.</strong> Lack of regulation and general misinterpretation of the tech opens the doors for snake oil salesmen. Be wary of every new company and piece of technology. The Bitcoin Lightning Network is being promoted as the solution to scalability issues. It rectifies these problems and ushers in a new era of development aimed at fostering mass adoption of cryptocurrency. In this article, I will make sure the Bitcoin Lightning Network is explained clearly, helping you learn cryptocurrency to focus your investment strategy.  Bitcoin might be the first digital currency, but Bitcoin microtransactions are required to bring about global implementation. During \nextremely busy times, these fees can dwarf the amount of Bitcoin being moved – making microtransactions economically unfeasible. \n\n•<strong>No scalability.</strong> The larger the network becomes, the slower and more expensive using Bitcoin becomes. If it’s going to disrupt the payments industry, it needs to be large enough to facilitate global transactions. \n\n<h2>The Bitcoin Lightning Network Explained</h2>\n\nThe main Bitcoin blockchain records and <strong>validates every transaction as it happens. This is what adds trust to a peer to peer network, but validating each transaction individually is not practical for scaling.</strong> The <a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrr_zPmEiME \">Lightning Network</a> is a layer two solution built on the Bitcoin protocol. You can think of it like an application built on top of Bitcoin to help facilitate transactions. It allows for transactions to happen off the blockchain helping with bitcoin scaling. For Bitcoin to take the place of money it needs to be just as easy to use. Layer two solutions are doing just that. I explain the Bitcoin Lightning Network below to help you understand the massive potential it has.\n\n<h2>Bitcoin Lightning Network Explained</h2>\n\nYou are going to your local coffee shop and want to use Bitcoin. <strong>When you make a transaction on the lightning network, it happens instantaneously.</strong> First, you set up a payment channel. Sounds confusing? This is simply a secure account that manages your funds on the lightning network. Think of it like putting money in escrow. The coffee shop has its own payment channel. Good user interfaces will make this form of Bitcoin micropayments as simple as Venmo.\n\nThe funds for the coffee are held in the payment channel. The shop can see it and they give you your drink. The cafe can withdraw their Bitcoin whenever they want to. \n\n<h2>Facilitating Bitcoin Micropayments</h2>\n\nThe underlying Bitcoin blockchain is too bulky to allow for micropayments. What is digital currency other than a value transaction? Building an additional layer of value transfer on top of the blockchain creates a faster method of exchange. This second layer is made up of people’s lightning wallets – which we can think of as nodes. The blockchain is built on a straightforward idea: every transaction completed relies on the previous one. Immutable and robust, Bitcoin implements a blockchain as its underlying foundation.  \n\nThe beauty of blockchain and cryptocurrency is that other protocols can be built on top of it. Developers can put a second layer of code on top of the existing protocol to help with Bitcoin scaling. It’s the same principle as creating a program that runs on the internet. Think of Google as a layer two solution for searching around the internet. The Lightning Network is a <a href=\"https://www.coindesk.com/layer-2-blockchain-tech-even-bigger-deal-think/\">second layer program</a>  built to solve scalability issues affecting Bitcoin. <strong>It creates an ecosystem where multiple nodes can scale up indefinitely.</strong> Ideally, the tech will allow for Bitcoin micropayments without requiring the invention of a new coin. \n\n<h2>Other Two Layer Solutions</h2>\nThe Bitcoin Lightning Network is only one of the numerous protocols being built. Other solutions provide an exciting glimpse into the future of cryptocurrency. Faster mainstream adoption will follow in the wake of the following upgrades:\n\n1. <strong>Atomic Swaps</strong>\nAllow for different tokens, on different blockchains, to be traded with one another. Example: You have 1 Bitcoin and want Monero. A user on the Monero blockchain will set up a payment channel, as will you on Bitcoin. This channel generates a cryptographic proof, automating trust for the trade. Each person then approves the transaction, which completes the trade. Thus,<strong> decentralized trading occurs without needing a 3rd party. </strong>\n\n2. <strong>1-1 Payment Channels</strong>\nSimilar to the lightning network, but instead of being part of a larger group of nodes, this transaction method only has 2 wallets. It allows for infinite transactions to be sent back and forth without being slowed down by the underlying blockchain. Potential uses are for businesses who move large amounts of value between each other. It can also be used between friends and family members for bitcoin micropayments. \n\n3. <strong>RSK</strong>\nShort for RootStock, is a sidechain built on Bitcoin. Its purpose is to facilitate smart contracts with 10-second block confirmation and a theoretical limit of 2,000 t/x. This second layer solution has the ability to automate the existing bureaucracy surrounding legal documents. \n\nThese developing solutions are in response to the market demands for Bitcoin scaling. As developers continue to perfect their layer two solution, good UI will follow, helping to speed <a href=\"https://www.cryptomaniaks.com/latest-cryptocurrency-news/future/how-cryptocurrency-will-change-the-world\">mass adoption</a> mass adoption. As it stands now, the only people using crypto are the ones who understand it.
