| body | Most of the investment knowledge that I have are just from what I have learnt from my Investment Management Degree from Cass Business School and add some common sense to it. I base my cryptocurrency research on top-down approach. Bare in mind that I research cryptocurrency based on my long term investment strategy. Therefore I will be emphasizing on factors like liquidity, fundamentals and allocation. The following point can be subjective, cryptocurrency cannot be analyzed like a company by using DCF or FCF models yet. Hopefully, some day a mathematician will come up with a valuation model that everyone can use. I try to value cryptocurrency with my own model based on growth rate (Hashrate) and inflation rate, but it is not too accurate yet. Top Down Approach 1. Screen cryptocurrency that are liquid. 2. Fundamental analysis to analyse the technology, history and most importantly the team. 3. Technical analysis for market timing. Step 1: Screening Liquidity filter 1. At least 50% of its circulating supply is being traded in each of the previous three months. 2. 80% or more of its supply in the public hand Step 2: Fundamental Analysis Fundamental Analysis are mostly qualitative factors. The following factors are some points that I consider when i look at a cryptocurrency. Technology 1. Direction of the technology Analyse their White Paper and understand what is the direction of the technology and their potential market size. How are they going to disrupt the target market. 2. Comparative Advantage What is unique about that cryptocurrency compare to their competitor? For example, EOS vs Ethereum, whats different between them? What EOS is doing that is better than Ethereum? Infinite Scaling? 1.5s confirmation times? 3. How the coins are monetize? Bitcoin can be spend on physical real goods, while some other coins can be spend on the service that the company provide. Some coin are just flowing around for speculation. Does the company care about the coin that they issue? 4. Growth of uses for the coin Dash wants to be the digital cash. They are developing end-user application for their coins. What other coins are doing for their uses? End-user application? Coin Redemption? Coin buy back? For example, Tgtcoin is offering dividend to their token holder. These factor will determine the intrinsic value of the coin. Team 1.Team Size and Position A well structure management is a healthy indicator for the company. Cryptocurrency should be managed like a proper company with CFO, COO and other significant position. 2. Background Check Experience in the relevant sector. Any bad record? Transparency is the key in identifying their trust worthiness. This is the part I emphasis on when i am researching on the developer and team. Conduct a throughout due diligence on their team and history. 3. How active are they in public? Civic Founder Vinny Lingham did a great job on being transparency and highly active in public by answering question and commenting. 4. GitHub development Most cryptocurrency are open source on Github. Analyze their GitHub activity with GitHub insight to see how productive they are at developing what they promised. History of the cryptocurrency Although past performance is not a good indicator for future performance. But I would look at the history of the cryptocurrency to see how the cryptocurrency perform at certain time and how the team has reacted. For example, with Charlie Lee rejoining litecoin team, he has ensure the value of litecoin, even in the bear market in June to July. Step 3: Technical Analysis I do not rely on technical analysis solely on any investment decision as research has proven that technical analysis are not a good indicator for future performance, especially in day trading. However, I use technical analysis to identify long term trend and help identify a good market timing to enter the market based on MACD and RSI. An article on coindesk (https://www.coindesk.com/life-crypto-time)made a good point that cryptocurrency trading is like trading 12 times faster than real world. Meaning 1 month in crypto is equal to 1 year in real world. There could be a bear and bull trend within a month. Therefore, trend identifying is very important in this highly speculative market. Buy low and hold on. ***Disclaimer: All information are for informational purpose only, not an investment advise. | body | Most of the investment knowledge that I have are just from what I have learnt from my Investment Management Degree from Cass Business School and add some common sense to it. Bitcoin can be spend on physical real goods, while some other coins can be spend on the service that the company provide. | body | Bitcoin and altcoin is a completely new asset class that consist of a very unique set of features. I think calling bitcoin and altcoin as a “cryptocurrency” can be very misleading from an investment standpoint. The reason is very simple, they dont function like a fiat currency nor used as a medium of exchange or store of value (maybe bitcoin can be seen more as a currency. But not for altcoin.) I personally like to refer “cryptocurrency” as “digital asset” or “the thing that everyone is hyped about”, but for the ease of understanding, ill call it cryptocurrency for this article. I think the mentality that people are speculative trading in “cryptocurrency” as if they are a fiat currency, and then comparing it to gold by its store of value and then completely ignoring the underlying development is wrong. In fact, digital asset is a hybrid of all 3 functions. 1.Medium of exchange like fiat currency At the moment, most “cryptocurrencies” are not usable for real world exchange. Although many startup and companies are developing technologies to help quicken mass adoption for cryptocurrency to become a medium of exchange, such as TenX and Bitpay. But at the moment, not many people are actually using cryptocurrencies to buy stuff. Because cryptocurencies are not mostly being used as medium of exchange, they do not behave in a way like fiat currency. Most of the cryptocurrency perfectly correlate with each other, unlike fiat currency, and cryptocurrencies does not dependent on any external factor, such as interest rate or GDP. Fiat currency depends on many factors like interest rate, political factors, import and export and also can be hedged with negative correlated currency. Therefore there is a legit reason to short certain fiat currency for some economical reason. Perhaps as the cryptocurrency market develop, the medium of exchange function will enhance and cryptocurrency price will start to affected by more factors like consumer spending, consumer confidence, import and export etc. Maybe i will start trading cryptocurrency in relation to fiat currency in the future. But now its mostly speculative based on news and some fundamentals. 2. Store of value like gold Bitcoin and gold share two similar characteristic which is scarcity. Bitcoin has a supply cap of 21millions, similar to the gold where there are only so much in this world. Both Bitcoin and gold are the dominate currency for their sector, where bitcoin is trade against all altcoin and gold is traded against USD and all other currencies are traded against USD. The difference between gold and bitcoin is their ownership. Gold is based on physical ownership and bitcoin is based on information ownership. This means, if you are physically holding the gold, that will represent your ownership of the gold, historically speaking. This is store of value at the purest form, which allow to be used as a collateral for other form of ownership. Cryptocurrency enable new form of ownership, identity ownership. Which means, if you own that piece of information, you own the underlying cryptocurrency. Cryptocurrencies are essentially informations. To summarize, Bitcoin is the equivalent of gold in cryptocurrency but not necessarily the substitute of gold in the real market, as they fundamentally serve a very different and intangible economic purpose. From investment perspective, cryptocurrencies may be a good hedge for future digital asset, for example cloud storage future contract or electricity power option or mobile data price?…But at the moment, it cannot be seen the same as gold, even though they are both high risk high return asset. 3. Fundamental development like equity Investing in cryptocurrencies are also like investing in stock market. The investor is essentially backing the underlying blockchain technology by contributing capital. With more capital, the underlying team and technology can grow better and faster. However, a lot of traders only see “cryptocurrency” as a currency. They ignore the development and the idea behind the cryptocurrency. The price of the cryptocurrency might fluctuate a lot, but that doesnt mean the blockchain technology and the team underlying the cryptocurrency is falling apart too. When I invest in cryptocurrency, i invest in the team and “company” underlying. Blockchain is an amazing technology that can greatly improve efficiency and information management by using smart contract and cryptography. Just like investing in startup, it takes time and trust to grow the company. From an investment perspective, there are really bad startup and startup with great potential, just like cryptocurrency. Therefore, analyse the fundamentals of a cryptocurrency like how you analyse a company fundamentals, to make the best investment decision. Conclusion Seeing “cryptocurrency” as an asset, rather than a currency is a mentality that I have for my investment strategy. I strongly believe in the adoption of blockchain technology and cryptocurrency will be a complement currency with fiat currency in the future. However, there is still a long way to optimize this technology for the mass adoption. **Disclaimer: All information are for informational purpose only, not an investment advise. Ever since I started trading traditional securities, I always go for long term due to the influence of “deep value” investing by benjamin graham and warren buffet. Therefore, I have a set of internal rules, restriction and discipline that i follow for my investment strategy. Investment Rules 1. No short selling short selling cryptocurrency is like a VC decided to short sell a startup right after they pitched them. Cryptocurrency is extremely risky, statistically speaking, and it is definitely should not be traded like a fiat currency. I will expand my view of this subject later. 2. No leverage/Margin In may 2017, the cryptocurrency market is in a crazy bull market. All speculators, short-term profit driven, no trading experience individuals, kitchen chief, farmers, cleaners got into the market to catch the waves. Start to see themselves as a “pro”, because they are making money. (only retard would lost money during May 2017 boom). People start taking on more risk by margin trading. Given cryptocurrency is already inherently risky, addition to margin trade, it is now riskier than playing russian roulette with fully loaded pistol. On 21 of june 2017, GDAX ethereum flash crash, trading eth at 3 cents, causing many liquidation on overly leveraged trader. Here thats for margin trading. Afterall, margin trade goes against my long term investment strategy as it will accumulate interest. 3. F**K the ICO My portfolio would never consider any ICO, unless they have matured for a certain period of time and have proved themselve worthiness and their technology is well developed. ICO is just getting more and more ridiculous. Some ICO are not even build on blockchain technology and some ICO dont even bother writing white paper. To summarize, Warren buffet dont make money by trading penny stock. Some ICO i would consider are, Golem, EOS, IOTA etc. because they are well backed by significant developers, very active community and good fundamentals. I will expand how I research cryptocurrency and look at their fundamentals in the future. Investment Strategy: Global Macro Global Macro is a strategy used by hedge fund to hold various securities by long position or short position, primarily based on the overall economic or political views of the securities. My strategy does not hold short position, but it is primarily trading on the macro economy of the cryptocurrency market as well as the fundamentals. Investors cannot control the market or the volatility, but we can control the cost of investment and the allocation and horizon. Long term passive investment have consistently beat active managed hedge fund due to its cost advantage and lack of fund manager stock selection risk.(vanguard did a study on that). My strategy will keep cost low by minimizing buying and selling and optimize asset allocation based on fundamentals and modern portfolio theory (MPT). My strategy is very simple “Invest in really good cryptocurrencies for a really long time” My next topic will go into details on how i construct my portfolio. ***Disclaimer: i am not a professional investor. all information are not investment advise. please seek professional investment adviser for your investment decision.*** Facebook — https://goo.gl/aQL15j Twitter — https://twitter.com/leetinka Linkedin — https://www.linkedin.com/in/leetinka/ Steemit —https://steemit.com/@brian741 |

| body | This is my first ever blog post. I decided to start blogging my digital asset portfolio strategy and performances and also my ideas on some of the news and information. Mostly from an investment perspective. Before I start, I would like to introduce myself. Bsc investment and financial risk management from Cass Business School, London, 2012. After graduating, started working with China Development Bank as corporate finance analyst and after that at a boutique Chinese investment bank as an associate. I first acknowledged the existence of Bitcoin and the Blockchain back in 2012. It all begun because I was searching for the “study” drug, adderall or ritalin or rubifen (generic version of ritalin), whatever I can get my hands on to get an edge for my academic as I wasnt book-smart. When I first purchased 47 Bitcoin at GBP 7/BTC, I never thought there’s another currency outside of fiat currency that store monetary value that allows me to purchase real world goods. Then I became fascinated with this new idea and I have a deeper look at what is bitcoin and blockchain. At that time, bitcoin is only used by dark web as a medium of exchange due to its anonymity function. In 2015, I completed my dissertation on bitcoin titled “Portfolio Diversification with Bitcoin”. Analyzing what financial characteristics does Bitcoin have, comparing to other newer cryptocurrencies that existed at the time, like dogecoin. You can find the research paper on my linkedin https://www.linkedin.com/in/leetinka/ To conclude my finding, Bitcoin is an enhanced version of gold, which exert even higher volatility and even higher return than gold, statistically speaking. But at the time, there wasnt enough data to conduct reliable research on bitcoin. As bitcoin only surge in price to GBP200/btc and mostly used for illegal activities. When I was working as a banker (like everyone else), Ive been trading cryptocurrency on the side, mostly bitcoin. Until early 2017, cryptocurrency is getting mainstream, a lot of startup and VC are investing into blockchain related startup, japan has listed bitcoin as a currency and a lot of speculators are getting into the cryptocurrency market. My avocation of cryptocurrency trading is starting to making more money than my soul-draining job. (mainly due to I wasn’t making lucrative salary like people from goldman or CICC with 44months bonus after being the underwriter and sponsor for alibaba) I decide to go full-time on trading cryptocurrency, reading more books on crypto and blockchain, looking at daily news and learn about what the communities is talking about. In Hong Kong, theres a networking community called BNI. I think they are quite global. One day, my friend invited me to BNI as a guest, which I have to represent an industry that I am working for. My friend says “just pretend to be a cryptocurrency trader”. This is during apri or may in 2017, during the crazy surge of ETH and BTC. When I was in the event i have to give a speech about myself, my job and what i want to get from this community. The speech goes something like this “Hi, im a crypto trader. I have extensive experience in cryptotrading, if any of you interested in this new type of asset class, im glad to educate or consult you.” At the end, there were surprisingly a lot of people approach me to seek advise about cryptocurrency, mostly people above age of 40 who can’t even operate an iphone at its full potential. Some people even ask to invest in my non-existent fund. I was like “ya ok sure”. This is when i realized there’s a huge information gap of traditional people or investors want to invest in this high tech asset class. Therefore, ive decide to make my non-existent fund to a real fund. (before SFC regulate the shit out of it) Lastly, I am writing this blog mostly to keep track of my own thoughts and maybe one day i can look back and see how stupid or lucky i am to start this fund. I will be sharing my strategy, ideas and other relevant stuff. |
