Joyce Beatty of Ohio and chair of the Congressional Black Caucus said in the group's hearing.\n\nDuring the impeachment debate to excoriate Trump, Rep. Cori Bush of Missouri, who was a veteran BLM activist before becoming a legislator, called the President \"White supremacist in chief.\"\n\n\"Madam Speaker, St. Louis and I rise in support of the article of impeachment against Donald J Trump. If we fail to remove a White supremacist President who incited a white supremacist insurrection, it's communities like Missouri's First District that suffer the most,\" Bush said during her speech.\n\nRioters stormed the US Capitol building last week, unleashing a wave of comparisons to last year's Black Lives Matter protests. The difference in police response was striking and there's more that sets them apart.\n\nPeople marched by the thousands in both after believing that a wrong had been done to them. The calls for racial justice across America over the summer were backed by the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and the pain of following generations of anti-Blackness sentiment. Unlike BLM protests, the insurrection at the Capitol was triggered by lies and deeply rooted racist stereotypes, experts say.\n\nConvinced that the presidential election was stolen, rioters touted themselves as \"patriots\" and repeatedly chanted \"USA, USA\" while vandalizing and destroying the building at the heart of America's democracy. Some of those terms are \"illegal alien,\" \"thug,\" and \"Welfare Queen,\" which was used by President Ronald Reagan when he ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 1976 to attack welfare chiselers during campaign speeches.\n\nIn his first public remarks to reporters since the insurrection, Trump insisted his speech inciting the riot was \"totally appropriate.\"\n\nHe claimed the \"real problem\" is what other politicians said about protests over the summer in Seattle and Portland, Oregon.\n\nThe insurrection at the Capitol was also a stunning show of force for the fringe movements with several symbols of white supremacist and extremist groups on display.\n\nA global rallying cry for Black lives\n\nIn 2013, the unexpected verdict in the murder trial in the killing of Trayvon Martin, a 17-year-old Black teen who had been walking in his father's Florida neighborhood, led to the birth of Black Lives Matter -- one of the most well-known organizations fighting for the well-being of Black people.\n\nWhat started as a hashtag became a website, an organization and later grew into more than a dozen local chapters across the US and Canada. They were driven by the series of deaths of Black Americans at the hands of police and vigilantes.\n\nAccording to the BLM website, its mission is \"to eradicate white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes.\"\n\nBut BLM's goal isn't just about protesting police brutality. At the local level, the organization advocates for mutual aid, defunding police and access to housing and health care for Black and brown workers.\n\n\"We live in a country built to keep us away from these resources that we need,\" says Kailee Scales, managing director of the Black Lives Matter Global Network. \"Folks in the movement have been consistently fighting to reverse that trend, to raise awareness that this is not the way we're supposed to live.\"\n\nStudies show that segregation persists in many American cities, leaving majority Black neighborhoods behind. Black communities don't have the same access as Whites to health care, quality education, good jobs and other resources.\n\n\"You know, for many of us in this country, we know what it is to be treated differently. And we also know what it is to be told that all of the things we experience every single day don't exist or that if they do exist that it's our fault (and) that we somehow created the conditions of inequality,\" said Alicia Garza, who co-founded the Black Lives Matter Global Network with Patrisse Cullors and Opal Tometi.\n\nIn the wake of Floyd's killing last summer, large crowds took to the streets in multiple cities in solidarity with Black Lives Matter. The protests were bigger and more sustained. The BLM signs that popped up in many people's yards were just the first signs of a nationwide racial reckoning.\n\nPeople marched against police violence, systemic racism, to be seen and heard.\n\"If you don't speak up and don't say anything, you're just like the officers that stood by and watched,\" Randy Fikki, a protester in Kansas City, told CNN affiliate WDAF-TV, referring to the officers involved in Floyd's death.\n\nCritics have responded to the phrase \"Black Lives Matter\" by coining their own slogans, such as \"All Lives Matter,\" which some argue minimizes the current struggle Black people face against systemic racism, and \"Blue Lives Matter,\" referring to the lives of police.\n\nLast week, Trump supporters were criticized on social media after using another phrase that has been known as a racial justice call for years.\n\nThey used the hashtag #SayHerName when referring to Ashli Babbitt, a 35-year-old White woman who was fatally shot as the mob tried to force its way toward the House floor.\n\nThey appeared to be oblivious to the #SayHerName campaign, which aims to raise awareness of the Black women and girls who fall victim to police brutality -- and who are often overlooked and forgotten.\n\nThe campaign, launched in 2014 by the African American Policy Forum and Center for Intersectionality and Social Policy Studies, has worked to highlight the cases of dozens of Black women, including Atatiana Jefferson and Michelle Cusseaux, both killed by police in their homes.",

It is unclear if it has come up since Wednesday's mayhem at the Capitol building fomented by the President's rhetoric or after his recent controversial call with the Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. Trump has asked about the legal and political consequences of a self-pardon, according to a source close to Trump.\nThe New York Times reported earlier Thursday that Trump has suggested in conversations since Election Day that he wants to pardon himself, citing two people familiar with the discussions.\n\nHe has also asked for legal opinions on whether he has the authority to issue a self-pardon and has been advised on the potential political fallout. Trump has also tweeted that he believes he has the power to do so.\n\n\"As has been stated by numerous legal scholars, I have the absolute right to PARDON myself, but why would I do that when I have done nothing wrong?\" the President said in 2018.\n\nStill, a presidential self-pardon is untested and experts are divided on its constitutionality. A Justice Department legal memo says the president cannot pardon himself but he can step down and ask his vice president to take over and pardon him. However, that memo is not binding.\n\nCNN legal analyst Elie Honig noted last year that a self-pardon would likely trigger a series of legal challenges seeking to undo the maneuver.\n\n\"A prosecutor first would have to indict Trump, notwithstanding the self-pardon. Then the issue would be litigated in the courts, likely up to the Supreme Court.       "body": "![210106175612-03-capitol-protest-security-0106-restricted-exlarge-169.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmZk9QCBUBieYoCuTzMXireYZcXT4ifVZ8tm3ByRZxcvrR/210106175612-03-capitol-protest-security-0106-restricted-exlarge-169.jpg)\n\n(CNN)The US Capitol is once again secured but four people are dead -- including one woman who was shot -- after supporters of President Donald Trump breached one of the most iconic American buildings, engulfing the nation's capital in chaos after Trump urged his supporters to fight against the ceremonial counting of the electoral votes that will confirm President-elect Joe Biden's win.\n\nShortly after 1 p.m. ET Wednesday hundreds of pro-Trump protesters pushed through barriers set up along the perimeter of the Capitol, where they tussled with officers in full riot gear, some calling the officers \"traitors\" for doing their jobs. About 90 minutes later, police said demonstrators got into the building and the doors to the House and Senate were being locked. Shortly after, the House floor was evacuated by police. Vice President Mike Pence was also evacuated from the chamber, he was to perform his role in the counting of electoral votes.\n\nAn armed standoff took place at the House front door as of 3 p.m. ET, and police officers had their guns drawn at someone who was trying to breach it. A Trump supporter was also pictured standing at the Senate dais earlier in the afternoon.\nA woman, who is yet to be identified, died after being shot in the chest on the Capitol grounds, DC police confirmed to CNN. More information on the shooting was not immediately available and a police spokesperson said additional details will come later. DC Police Chief Robert Contee said three other people died from medical emergencies during the riot.\n\n\"One adult female and two adult males appear to have suffered from separate medical emergencies, which resulted in their deaths. Any loss of life in the District is tragic and our thoughts are with anyone impacted by their loss,\" Contee said at a news conference Wednesday night.\n\nMultiple officers have been injured with at least one transported to the hospital, multiple sources tell CNN.\n\nSmoke grenades were used on the Senate side of the Capitol, as police work to clear the building of rioters. Windows on the west side of the Senate have been broken, and hundreds of officers are amassing on the first floor of the building.\n\nThe Senate floor was cleared of rioters as of 3:30 p.m. ET, and an officer told CNN that they have successfully squeezed them away from the Senate wing of the building and towards the Rotunda, and they are removing them out of the East and West doors of the Capitol. It's not clear if any of the individuals have been taken into custody.\n\nThe US Capitol Police worked to secure the second floor of the Capitol first, and were seen just before 5 p.m. pushing demonstrators off the steps on the east side of the building. With about 30 minutes to go before Washington, DC's 6 p.m. ET curfew, Washington police amassed in a long line to push the mob back from the Capitol grounds.\n\nIt took until roughly 5:40 p.m. ET for the building to once again be secured, according to the sergeant-at-arms.\n\nThe stunning display of insurrection was the first time the US Capitol had been overrun since the British attacked and burned the building in August of 1814, during the War of 1812, according to Samuel Holliday, director of scholarship and operations with the US Capitol Historical Society.\n\nThe shocking scene was met with less police force than many of the Black Lives Matter protests that rolled across the country in the wake of George Floyd's killing at the hands of Minneapolis police officers last year. While federal police attacked peaceful protesters in Lafayette Square outside the White House over the summer, clearing the way for Trump to take a photo in front of a nearby church at the time, protesters on Wednesday were able to overrun Capitol police and infiltrate the country's legislative chambers.\n\nAn afternoon of chaos\n\nThe protesters first breached exterior security barriers, and video footage showed protesters gathering and some clashing with police near the Capitol building. CNN's team on the ground saw a number of protesters trying to move up the side of the Capitol building. Several loud flash bangs were heard as well.\n\nProtesters could be seen pushing against metal fences and police using the fences to push protesters back, while other officers reached over the top to club people trying to cross their lines.\n\nFlash bangs could be heard near the steps of the Capitol as smoke filled the air. In some instances officers could be seen deploying pepper spray. Tear gas was deployed, but it's not clear whether by protesters or police, and people wiped tears from their eyes while coughing.\n\nAfter the building was breached, the Capitol police officer in the House chamber told lawmakers that they may need to duck under their chairs and informed lawmakers that protesters were in the building's Rotunda. Lots of House members were seen wearing gas masks as they move between Capitol buildings. Members were calling family to say they are OK.\n\nCongressional leaders were being evacuated from the Capitol complex just before 5 p.m. ET and were set to be taken to Fort McNair, a nearby Army base in Washington, according to a federal law enforcement official.\n\nTrump has directed the National Guard to Washington along with \"other federal protective services,\" according to White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany. The entire DC National Guard has been activated by the Department of Defense, according to the Pentagon.\n\n\"The D.C. Guard has been mobilized to provide support to federal law enforcement in the District,\" said Jonathan Hoffman, the chief Pentagon spokesman. \"Acting Secretary Miller has been in contact with Congressional leadership, and Secretary McCarthy has been working with the D.C. government.
