      "body": "The origin of the word _Jumbo_ is a bit of a myth mixed in with conjecture and splashed with some showmanship. In essence a good story.\n\nIt is thought the original word could have been of African origin. The Kongo words nzamba and nzombo (meaning elephant) are an option as the genesis of the word. Others believe that it could have come from the swahili word “hello” (jambo) or from the Zulu word for a “large parcel”. Basically no one knows where it originally came from but we do know when it became popular and THIS is an interesting story. \n\nIn 1860 a young elephant calf was captured somewhere in East Africa after his mother was shot by hunters. He made his way to France and thereafter to the London Zoo. At the London Zoo _Jumbo_ started coming into his own and became the largest elephant the world had ever seen.\nThe legendary showman [P.T.       "body": "On holiday in the Drakensberg I decided to get my macro photography on! Hiking around I came across a tree with quite cup shaped leaves. The insects in these leaves were quite a macro photography treasure. \n\nGoogle maps  [link](https://www.google.co.za/maps/place/28%C2%B057'05.1%22S+29%C2%B028'42.3%22E/@-28.9517446,29.4740126,2735m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m9!1m2!2m1!1slower+drakensberg!3m5!1s0x1ef3abc525f2c2a7:0x84f520af92316422!7e2!8m2!3d-28.9514168!4d29.4784158) to the location.\n\nBoth of these photographs were taken with my Canon 100mm f2.8 lens.\nI am no entomologist so sadly I have no idea what any of these bugs are called but they certainly are photogenic.\nThe first of these were two bugs very busily trying to forage through a leaf. Two different types of bugs working side by side just trying to get by.       "body": "C++ is an amazing language. Its ability to manipulate data structures and the way to can conceptualise objects is unparallelled. My concern though is that it has become way too complicated to use. Writing a basic C++ program is easy enough but to really use the power of the language, the things that set it apart from Java and the others you really need to know quite a bit. Most people don't get there and as a result drop it in favour of one of the other languages that are \"easier\" to get good at. Any thoughts on this?",

      "body": "# Background\nThis is a series of submissions on my attempt to create my own JARVIS and all the home automation bits that go with it. This series of articles starts [here](https://steemit.com/technology/@balmainhk/my-jarvis-introduction).\n\n# Overview\nThe basic idea behind any home automation (which at the end of the day is all that Jarvis is) is the idea that different things in your house are controlled/monitored from a central location or at the very least, a remote location. This means that you need devices that are connected to your lights switch, kettle, fridge or whatever else you want to control/monitor. Now unless you want to run wires all over your house these need to be on WiFi. Until this meant a Raspberry Pi with a wifi dongle as the cheapest option. In the last few years however a chip has come on the market that has revolutionised this space. It is made by a company called [Espressif](http://www.espressif.com/) and it is called the ESP8266.\n\n# History\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmewMKuFZLExG4fxg6D2MxNUjyV62mFTgHabtLPRQufFPF/image.png)\nThe ESP8266 first came to market in August 2014 and was completely unusable.
